Guest guest
it sounds like you were indeed fortunate in some regards with getting sick and going to that particular hospital. I hope Nikki does well and has an easy uneventful pregnancy. Thanks for the scholarship info if you don't mind I am going to share it with my family and friends. the WV hillbilly
Guest guest
Thanks to all of you for your support regarding my latest ordeal. One thing I forgot to share about my recent out of town hospitalization was in regard to my daughter. Most of you know that Nikki and got married the end of May. they are doing remarkably well and are so very happy. they are going to start trying to begin their family after the first of the year. Sh! It's a secret that only Nikki, , and I are supposed to know about, but I'm sure you guys won't tell any of my local friends or family. Anyway, Nikki's current OB-GYN is in Alabaster - the town where I was admitted to the hospital. This is the closest hospital to where they currently live and is about 10 miles from their apartment. Nikki likes her GYN but when she had a pre-pregnancy appt with him to discuss her autoimmune clotting disorder (which will require her to have daily heparin injections throughout her pregnancy), her rheumatoid arthritis, asthma, allergies, and meds, he didn't tell her that she cannot take most of her meds during pregnancy. He has been her GYN for 4 years now, since she started college and he is aware of the meds she's on. When I asked her about her meds, she said she assumed all would be okay since he didn't tell her otherwise. However, she decided to call and talk to his nurse after I told her that I didn't think that was the case. The nurse told her that she cannot take singulair (for asthma), effexor (she had taken it since she was 17 for anxiety and depression but went ahead and stopped it last month and is doing fine without it), probably cannot take Mobic (arthritis med). The nurse said, " It sounds like you need to make an appt for pre-pregnancy counseling. " Nikki told her she had just done that a few weeks earlier and that the OB-GYN had not told her that any of her meds would be a problem even though Nikki was very specific in telling him that they planned to stop birth control pills and then stop all forms of birth control once she's had 3 cycles without birth control pills. So, Nikki decided she needed an OB-GYN that was going to monitor her a little more aggressively and make sure that her doctor provides her with all the info she needs to have the best chances for a healthy baby. She also decided she'd really rather have a female as her OB. She told me there was a female OB-GYN in with her current OB-GYN and that she was going to make a pre-pregnancy appt with her and see what she thought about her. Well, while I was in the hospital, the gen. practitioner that was on call in the group that Nikki uses was a young female doctor. She was very interested in all my autoimmune issues and I mentioned to her that Nikki has RA and the antiphospholipid syndrome. I also mentioned that Nikki was very happy to know that I was receiving such good care at Baptist Shelby hospital in Alabaster since that was most likely where she'd have her baby if she gets pregnant while they live in Montevallo. The doctor told me that with Nikki's medical history she needed a doctor that was going to pay attention to the small stuff and would not be afraid to send her to an OB that deals with very high risk pregnancies in case problems arose. The doctor said she intended to use a female OB-GYN in Alabaster and that she felt Nikki would be in excellent hands with this doctor. she even wrote down the doctor's name. When I called Nikki to tell her the OB-GYN's name, Nikki told me that was the female in with her current OB-GYN and that she already has an appt scheduled with her! Needless to say, this made both Nikki and I feel much better. I told Nikki it just had to be part of God's plan for me to end up in the hospital there and for us to all feel reassured about Nikki's potential choice for an OB-GYN as well as knowing that the hospital will be able to provide wonderful care for both Nikki and baby - when she does get pregnant. God is truly great and there really is a reason for everything. I hated stressing my family out by being in the hospital away from home, but I truly believe it was meant to be. By the way, asked for the address for the memorial scholarship that is being set up in memory of my friend, Cardwell, 23, and her young daughter, Ciara, 5, who were killed in a car wreck on Dec 9th. Here's the info if any of you would like to donate. I know there are many tragedies every day and so very many good causes that are deserving of donations. It is always both a difficult and personal choice to decide how and where to share our limited funds. I believe this is a very worthy cause and I also believe that by establishing the scholarship fund before Christmas, we may make a holiday season filled with terrible pain and tragedy just a tiny bit brighter for the family of and Ciara. All donations are tax deductible. Please continue to be in prayer for the family of and Ciara, as well as the family of Dr. Jenita , who was also killed in this terrible accident. Many years ago we were celebrating my parents' wedding anniversary at a restaurant when my father collapsed from a heart attack. Both he and my mother had extensive medical problems and had used the same doctor for many years. Despite our urging to get second opinions, they never did. Anyway our waiter was a volunteer EMT for a local ambulance service--how lucky can you get? He took excellent care of my father and had an ambulance there very quickly. They took Dad to a nearby hospital where he was treated by all new doctors. The results were so successful that both he and Mom switched to their care and the quality of their lives changed dramatically. So now we remember FONDLY the day Dad collapsed face first into the antipasto. Regards Elaine Long Island, NY
Guest guest
Dear Elaine…what an incredible story. Indeed, sometimes when “bad” things happen, they can very well end up being some of the most wonderful blessings! Thank you for sharing your story!
