Yes this is exactly what happens to me, although not so much now at my

present stage of recovery?/degeneration?/cycle. It was quite amazingly

absolute - I could never work out why I always got sick on a Thursday or

Friday - it was because I had exercised the weekend before.

Steve,

I'm sure you know the answer pretty much. Others on the list might know

specifically the aerobic /anaerobic issue re determining which types we

can do. However, no matter which it varies so from person to person,

from day to day, etc.

At one point early on, after initially being bedridden, I did some very

gentle running at dusk in the warm weather. It was truly wonderful. But

after my remission ended (I didn't know it was just a remission neither

did my doc, who should have) the activity issue is much more limited re

what I can tolerate and much more complicate re how much and what I can

do to stay maximally conditioned, not to mention some " fun . "

I do think that those exercises that risk injury (as you note) of a

severe type are to be avoided if possible because then during the healing

process when you can do virtually nothing you get so deconditioned that

it can be serious, long term.

I think stretching, swimming (if you can--I can no longer), and walking

are among the best.

But I'm pretty sick and for a long time now and maybe my advice is too

conservative.

You mentioned that you (people with CFS) go into " remission " . When you relapse,

can you tell that you're pushing too hard, or does a relapse happen suddenly and

unexpectantly? What has been anyone's experience with this?

>>>You mentioned that you (people with CFS) go into " remission " . When you

>>>relapse,

can you tell that you're pushing too hard, or does a relapse happen suddenly

and

unexpectantly? What has been anyone's experience with this?

this was addressed to judith, but i'll take it on too...I was initially sick

for 6 months then relapsing/remitting (every time i got a cold...cfs

symptoms returned, put me out for 1-4 weeks). Be very, very careful with

exercise. I was always athletic before, and i think I might have just been

relapsing/remitting if I had not been pushing myself so hard...but now, i've

been sick for over 3 years, not working, laying on the floor mostly due to

oi/pots probs. thnak God for laptops. :)

My relapses happened mostly when I was stressed out, working out too hard

(used to be an avid cyclist, rollerblader)...etc. and got a cold. but i

think my own stubbornness in insisting to push myself (despite what my body

was clearly telling me) prolonged each of my relapses, and finally pushed me

over the edge to chronic. it's easy when you start to feel a little better

to get so psyched about feeling a little bit better that you ignore your

body telling you to slow down--you just don't want to hear it. but it's

really important to be attentive to your body and how it responds to

exercise. i still do a bit of exercise--some leg stuff on the floor (how

boring!), yoga (floor stuff, inverted poses), some light weight training

mostly for my legs (supposed to help oi). water walking has been helpful to

me as well when i'm able to tolerate something that aerobic...the water

pressure and cool temp of a workout pool feel good.

so that's my take on exercise. don't let yourself atrophy or anything, but

listen to your body and be conservative. and if you're in a phase that

anything aerobic feels like crap, respect that and do some strength stuff.

i'm always telling people i'm going to be a triathlete when i'm 90--by then,

they'll have figured this stuff out and i won't have to worry about relapse.

and now, in my mid-20s, i'm going thru the feeling-like-i'm-90 thing. not

sure if i'm making sense anymore. hope my babblings are helpful to someone,

anyway.

Thank you for your replies. One thing that felt soooo wonderful to me when I

was actually feeling pretty bad was some very LIGHT swimming or just standing in

chest deep water. I was amazed at how good it felt to feel light again. With

this fatigue I feel like I'm carrying around a body that is made of lead and

soooo hard to move. The water made me light and bouyant. It was almost as if I

wasn't sick any more.

This (below) ? is almost too complicated to answer fairly (i.e.,

comprehensively). The short version is that if ever you start to

experience an increase in symptoms (worsening/less functionality) it

might very well be due to your having increased your activity level too

much (either one time or, more likely, over time, which can be a few days

or months). This means you have to be very sensitive/aware of your body

talking, and that self-awawreness is to me very draining in itself. But

it has to be mastered without making you neurotically self-pre-occupied.

However, sometimes, shorter (but still unpleasant and sometimes not short

enuf) relapses occur with little discernible message. The only info is

looking back over what you did. When you see you can often determine

what it was, which is either a one-shot too muchness or repeated

not-too-muchensses without sufficient pacing, as in " days off. "

But that's the short version.

Hello all -

Just wanted to add some comments about my exercise

regimen. Ever since I got diagnosed, I have made sure

that every day I do light housework, like making the

bed, putting the dishes in the dishwater, general

tidying up, and laundry, even if it takes about four

days to finish. These tasks keep me moving and get

rid of the morning stiffness I always have. Then I

walk my dog for 30 minutes, even if we only go 1/2

mile - it's nice being out in the fresh air, and I do

stretches while she stops to sniff and do her

business. We also go to the dog park most days, and I

throw her a ball and play a little with the other

dogs. Lastly, I try to do my physical therapy

stretches for my back, although not every day.

I used to love swimming, but unless I go in a very

warm pool it aggrevates my fm pain too much. Very

gentle yoga works for me, but I'd belong in the senior

class and I'm only 43!

But all this has helped me maintain my normal weight

even after three years of being housebound, and my

flexibility is still reasonably good, just not what it

used to be.

FWIW - Jennie

Steve,

I love my aqua exercise PT program. You sound in better shape than me, so a

regular Y program might work for you. Scuba involves great weight carrying. I

also had life threatening asthma attack last year while diving, so if you have

any allergy/asthma problems I would skip that for now.

When I was better I did Tai Chi and loved that. As I said, you seem better than

me, so I would look into various martial arts. Might improve physical wellbeing,

and help the boredom. Hope that helps...

> remember a time when a trip to the coffee pot was exercise for us!!!

For me, it's either to and from the bathroom or up and down the 3 flights of

stairs from my apartment to the washer in the basement.

Not fun, but it's got to be done.

I think it got mis-directed! Your email says 5:34p it was sent - that's

about the time Ed and his boss were in that car accident.

When he got in and told me what happened I *did* feel a jolt, through!

Walking over tot he doctor's (the office is only 2 blocks away) I *did* see

how out of shape I am, so I better not make any more excuses to avoid that

treadmill. Just doing the occasional video tape just isn't doing anything to

get this body back in shape.
