I meant that these two times are good to exercise.

I haven't exercised since 12.23.02

Do you exercise twice a day? Is there a specific reason to exercise in

the afternoon?

I've heard that exercising in the afternoon will help you sleep better.

I have more time to exercise in the morning usually. I try to exercise

for 1 hour every day.... though I skip a day here and there...

I have found my soul mate in November of 2002, although that is not

exactly the right word. " " My equal " " is more appropriate.

Hmmm. I am missing the connection between finding your soul mate and not

exercising for a little over a year and a half. I thought exercise greatly

enhanced nutrient absorption among many other benefits. Do you have a

secret way to not need exercise or have you just not wanted to any longer

now that you have a soul mate you have found? If I'm asking too much

there's no need to reply, but understand, I'm just curious.

Another thought on exercise. WATER!! Some of the problems people experience

are because of dehydration. And drinking some water right before or during

exercise will not fix dehydration.

Remember: your body needs new water every hour! every day!

Save your pennies for a VCR. OR ask ex hubby to buy one for the kids of course. LOL Luckily they are cheap. Then you can always rent. If you have on demand check out if you have fittv. They have many 1/2 hr exercise segments. Different people doing them. Buy a $4 pedometer at walmart and walk. I know depending on where you live the weather BUT that will be changing soon to. Use soup cans for your arms do so many on each arm. If I think of anything else I will holler.

Hi Amy!

I'm WAY WAY behind in my email, but thought I'd read a few of the

more recent posts... Welcome to the group by the way ;)

A quick suggestion for getting a vcr or dvd player.. go to

Freecycle.org and search for a group in your area, sign up and watch

for one to be offered. I know there have been several VCR's lately

on the groups I'm on a few DVD players here and there... best of luck!

I brought up the topic because Curves seems to have a few good

things going for it.

1) It is good for socializing.

2) My daughter, looking over my shoulder, mentioned that " its fun! "

3) Low impact

4) Circuit training (a machine (hydraulic cylinders give you

resistance, similar to exercising in water) followed by a recovery

station, then another machine, etc.) You basically go from station

to station, for 30 minutes, about 30 seconds per station. If you

can't use the machine at a station, just skip that station.

5) No pressure as far as speed, number of repetitions, etc.

6) No social pressure. You come in your sweats, jeans, whatever.

(They do encourage you to have something besides your street shoes,

though.) Males are very rarely present. (Legally, if a male wants

to sign up, he has to be allowed, although the " For Women " in the

store name probably takes care of that issue.

7) I've been using one for a couple of months now. I've been

feeling good (so far). I haven't had any of the problems that I got

when I, err, forget to do my exercises at home. There is one

machine that I skip and another that I use in a modified form.

I've been using the club because...

8) (Disclosure time)...my wife bought a franchise. I go in during

the off-hours. But, since I have some of the same back issues as

you, I thought I'd give it a try. (My wife also uses me as the

token " person with back issues " .)

9) Don't you hate when people number each item in a list? :-)

I know that this isn't for everybody. But with your doctor's

permission, it might be for some of you.

P.S. I've just been told that the franchise is now " Curves " because

some states don't allow the " For Women " part. Sigh

with Dr. Farcy and deciding I wasn't in shape for surgery anyway so

I might as well get in shape, then get the good news. Anyhow, I love

it. There is very little I cannot do and I am fused T5 to sacrum, 2

H Rods. I never have any discomfort while I am working out and the

one and only thing I just don't do there is one of their stretches

where you lay on your back and lift your legs up. Only because i

know my back and that would keep me on the floor for a good hour. I

actually have much more self esteem too. I can't explain the problem

that I have. It is like my one rod will lock and I am stuck almost

in a leaning back position. Can't walk, can't sit, nothing. But

within 10-15 minutes, it loosens up and I am fine again. That

happens almost everyone day up to 2 times a day. Since I started at

Curves, it never happened at all, until I was home with strep

> throat this week. So, I think it is a good program, after all

that babbling! You work at your own level. The ladies at my

particular Curves are wonderful, know my situation and help out as

best they can. One of them is a massage therapist also and she has

gone as far as looking flatback up and trying to understand my body

more so she can help me. So, I hope this will answer any questions

or make good reading for someone! Thanks.

My sister tried one in PA and really liked it. About 10 years ago I

went to a Bally's for awhile. The only part I liked besides the

treadmills were the machines where almost nothing moved. This is good

to know about Curves. If I ever come into some money (ha ha) I'll

have to look into it. And no, I don't hate your numbers, I rather

like it!

I have a great physical therapist, who not only makes house calls, but also goes

to the gym with me to show me which machines I can safely use, and then to

progress me in different free weights... Not only is it great to make sure I'm

going because I know she'll expect to see progress, but I also feel safer doing

exercises that have been PT approved!

I've heard really good things about the curves here in Brighton, MA (Boston). As

you know Boston is a college town, so for us gals that are getting a bit older,

many health clubs can be intimidating-not to mention costly! I wish your wife

It won't work as well as HIIT simply because of the hours later

afterburn that HIIT provides. By all means enjoy those activities.

They burn calories. The HIIT is what will melt the fat like butter

Thank you for your reply. Is HIIT what he talks about in the book?

It's been a while since I read it, I guess I need to read it again.

Do you think walking/jogging on the treadmill would be better? I'm

sorry to sound so dumb but I've never really been on an exercise

program before but I sure am looking forward to the

benefits/changes. :)

the housing authority over the place i live in. when they come to spray for pests, one of the girls from the office some through and look through our house to make sure it isnt a mess or dirty if it is then you are called on for a full house inspection and if they do not like what they see then you'll have three days to clean it up or you'll be evicted. soo every month when it is time for them to come around i have to scrub the entire house spotless so they wont find something to do an inspection for. i hate it and my gfamily will be moving out soon thank goodness. tammyJase4567@... wrote: In a message dated 1/11/06 7:48:04 P.M. I like the good old leg lifts, and I do them every which way, straight up,

and laying on each side. Plus I do them sitting up and just lifting about

an inch off the floor. I think I am up to about 4 pounds with the ankle

weights. Thanks to someone on the list, I also think squeezing a ball

between my knees has been very helpful.

I avoid anything that hurts. The wall squats I always dreaded at therapy,

and never did them at home.

I loved the leg press at the therapists because they had a nice one. The

one I have at home I was concerned was hurting me so I quit for a while and

have just recently started back to doing that and it's going great. I feel

a lot stronger now, but still have a ways to go. I do the treadmill for 30

minutes a day about 5 times a week.

With all the things I am doing, I wonder why I don't have thighs of steel.

Instead all I have is flab, and it just doesn't seem right! Oh well, maybe

I really need to do more, but at this point I already spend a lot of time

with my exercises. I do them on my good leg too.

Exercise

Just to get some ideas........what are some of

people's favorite exercises? Which ones make your

knee(s) feel better, which ones make you run for the

advil bottle??

To start - I like to swim, and find that static weight

machines (except for the knee extension one) make me

feel pretty good. The elliptical is ok, the rowing

machine works well to keep flexion in my knee. I use

the tread mill for very short periods and then do

sideways walking and backwards walking....both seem to

keep the knee " loose " . While road cycling seems to be

ok, stationary biking hurts like the dickens and my

knee always feels " out of whack " afterwards (this, one

different types of bikes.....)

Hello Sydney, I improved mine with swimming (which I ain't doing right now), but got mine up to 70% when going to the pool 3 times a week. Feels great. Does not hurt and you don't sweat. HI,

I don't know how you get your EF up , mine is 15% ,although I am walking around 2 miles a day in the florida heat. Nothing seems to help. Maybe I should try swimming.

Thanks for the thoughts,

Ya think? LOL

>I just know it needs to be done and I *do* feel better

It also helps that you have a nice place to go to *do* your exercise, and

that you don't have those traumatic memories of gym class like I do. LOL Did

you guys watch The Simpsons episode with the gym teacher who whacks

everybody with the ball and yells our " Bombardment!! " ? Now *that* is close

ot how our gym teachers acted. The female teachers I had in high school

weren't much better.

I still have mine in the shopping cart on Amazon. One of these days I can

talk Ed into spending $20 on the cd.

I listen to it as I am going to bed

That one sounds better than the one I had/will get. Too bad I can't hear and

comprehend many female voices, especially on cd's and without my hearing

aids, so it would a waste of money to me.
