,

I think a bunch of us here will really relate to your post. So many of us in

this group feel mistreated, misled and bascially taken for granted by the

medical field. It can be SOOO frustrating! It really does prove what I have

always believed - Parents are the very best advocates their children will

ever have!! That is one of the most important aspects of parenting - being an

advocate for our children. So, if we have to do the research and " force feed "

the information on our doctors I guess that is what we will do. It doesn't

seem right, but for our babies we will do just about anything!

I appreciate your post - I think it reflects the feelings of a large number

of us in this group. We have so many people here who have been so good about

getting the word out and they deserve a round of applause!!!

I to can relate to the frustration of being in the peds. office and the Dr.

being defensive.

My son has had a head deformity since he was 2 mos. When I expressed my

concerns of his head shape to the Dr. she laughed and called him a " toaster

head " . The Dr. told us not to worry it would round out. My son is now 4

mos. old, and his head is still mishappen, and his forhead is starting to

bulge. After alot of research on Plagio. I found a Specialist at Cedar

Sinae Hospital (they have a plagio clinic) who agreed to see us if I had a

referral from my Dr. On Monday I went to see my Ped. who was upset that I

had educated myself, I showed her literature on the Plagio studies and the

long term results if left untreated. She became angry and said if we banded

our son we would be " torturing him " . The Dr. also stated that in all her

years of practice all babies heads rounded out eventually, and if not they

could have " surgery " to correct the problem, and we should trust her

opinion. She then started to turn to my husband and lead him to believe that

I am being oversensitive to a normal condition. When I told her I would

like a referral she refused. I left the office feeling even more confused

and upset. My husband left feeling that the Dr. must be right and now he

does not want to meet with the specialist. I am still going to the

appointment with the specialist ( he agreed to see us without the referral),

but without the referral our insurance will not pay for the visit. I have

never been so upset, one minute I feel I am doing the best for my son, and

the next I feel I am being neurotic. I have lost sleep and shed many tears.

I am just so confused and very frustrated.

Aaagh! That is awful. Is it possible to talk to another of the peds

in the same practice perhaps? If it is anything like our practice,

referrals get handled centrally, so it wouldnt matter if it was

actaully a different ped from normal who did the referral.

Im sorry you are having to go through this. Hang in there, and I hope

you find the support you need.

Dori,

To often these Dr's turn to our spouses and try to get a gang up on

the mommy thing going thinking that the father will be easier to sway

because they are the more rational parent and it is not right.

As for the Dr. giving your little one the nick name toaster head (how

dear she) that would have been my first signal that she wasn't the

right Dr. for my girls.

Please understand that I am not trying to make you feel bad in any way

but that I am trying to convey that you have every right to feel angry

and hurt and distrustful of the Dr.

How could she feel that putting a child in a band or helmet is torture

and then in the next breath turn to you and say that if it dosn't

round out there is always surgery. HELLO since when is surgery

something we take so nonchalantly. If surgery dosn't have to be an

option then why are so many Dr's willing to use it. Esp. when the

studies all show that way too many children have had unnecessary

surgery to correct what could have just been done with some plastic

and foam.

As for the referal I would insist on it and if the Ped. still refuses

then I would report her to the Ins. Co. and ask for them to give you

the referal due to the fact that she refuses to do so.

I hope this helps some.

Dori,

Hi! This is Marci - we chatted in the Plagio Chat Room last night. I still

think you should try to change peds if you can and get a second opinion. For

sure you should change peds if for no other reason then for calling your

child a " toaster head " . That would have sent me straight through the

roof!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Dori - you are doing the right thing in pursuing

treatment. Obviously your instinct is telling you to do so and that mommy

instinct is rarely ever wrong!

Please let us know how the appointment with the specialist goes. If the

specialist is willing he/she might be willing to write a letter to your ped

explaining the condition and the possible complications involved if left

untreated. Maybe your ped won't let you educate her, but how can she turn a

blind eye to the words of an expert!

Good luck and please keep us posted. You are doing the right thing for Will.
