Hi ,

I also had a friend who had terrible hip problems - for years. She

was quite strict with her macrobiotics and she also tried many other

modalities. I don't know what was the cause, I only know bone was

hitting bone and it hurt her alot. In the end she had it operated on.

Those problems with the hip bones are caused by a too yang diet. I've had that too many times. I've found that eating butter, chocolate and milk lessens those problems very quickly, but if I use them too much I get problems higher up in my spine caused by yin extremes. Youghurt does not give me problems in my spine but it helps less than milk to solve the hip problem, and you need to use cow milk because goat's milk is too yang for this. The problem gets worse when I eat red meat or chicken. Fruits and salads do not help my hip problems, they can actually worsen them.

Many people become way too contracted on a strict macrobiotic diet, that's why these hip problems happen with many long time macros. By looking at their faces you can easily tell if they're too contracted and these problems can be avoided long before they manifest. Being underweight also increases the hip problems. You need to be sure you have enough flesh around the bones to avoid problems. If your neck looks too thin than that's an alarms signal. Your buttocks should be full and round. The flesh on your butt shouldn't be too soft or thin.

If the person is a long time macro then she should examine her stools to see if the grains and beans are properly digested. If the digestion is weak then you cannot eat strictly macro and should include other rich foods that are easier to digest untill your digestion is strong enough to live without. Otherwise you get too yang.

Secondly, you should avoid the use of a pressure cooker. Pressure cooking makes the grains way too yang. Most people quickly gain some weight after they quit the use of a pressure cooker. Cooking in cast iron dutch ovens however does take a little practise but it's very rewarding.

As for that yoga teacher, does she only avoid meat or does she also not eat dairy? Eating butter and cow's milk should lessen those problems within a few days and could be used safely as a temporary solution. If you wish to live fully without dairy then you should find out what made you too yang, you should look at your diet as a whole and try to figure out what caused the yangness. Until then, don't be afraid to eat non-macro food but try to understand what effect the foods have on your body.

There is an article in this months " Yoga Journal " called 'Pain Free

Practice' that may be worth reading. It highlights a common issue

practitioners may experience with the sacrum and sacroiliac joint (SI

joint). The article helped me identify the pain and stiffness I was

experiencing and provided some postures for correcting.
