Connie, this is what terrifies me about treatment. Sheeesh, already

my hair is falling out...really, really thin on the top. I have to

get creative as it is. I read somewhere about a woman who has dark

red hair like mine, she got her daughter to use an eyebrow pencil and

draw hair in where she's thinning. I tried it. It works!! For now.

I also have some expensive stuff that my b/f bought me, but haven't

used it yet. If I were you, I would wait till after treatment. It

would be a futile exercise right now. If I gotta go on treatment,

then I'm heading to nearest wig shop pronto...hair before rent or

food. That's my motto. I've also seen some very well done scarves

that look good. I think you can get trained free how to use them by a

chemotherapy clinic. Might be something to look into?

How much longer on you on treatment? Maybe I could order a wig

through the internet and have it delivered to you, then you could send

it to me when it's my turn. Hmmmmm, something to think about.

Hey Connie...you can't use the chemical stuff, cause it interferes with

treatment (rogain, minoxidil, etc.) What you can use is NIOXIN. Start right

away and it will definitely help to stem the loss...not completely...but I

didn't lose my hair. It got thinner, no doubt about it and it also lost it's

curl...but I didn't end up bald! You can get it at Trade Secrets (if you

have one near you) or go online and type in NIOXIN and you'll get their

website. On it is a place to find locations that sell their products near

you. It is also sold in some hair salons. I would say to start immediatley

with the scalp therapy. I waited and just used the shampoo...but I think I

should have used the whole kit and kaboodle from day one. They also have a

great lifter to make you hair appear thicker...also a mousse (non-alchol) so

it is easier on your hair. I am 4 months post-treatment and my hair IS

starting to re-gro it's thickness. I'm still having trouble with not having

curl to my hair...sometimes it's there, other times not...oh

well....comparatively speaking, I am blessed! It could be worse! Hope this

helps. God bless you AND your locks!!!!! Happy Christmas. luv, mzgee

Just curious of anyone knows if hair loss is a given on treatment. I have a

friend who has gone through the treatment and did not seem to notice anything

unusual with hair loss. She may have just been lucky, her sides were pretty

mild, nausea the 1st few shots and then felt pretty normal the remainder of

treatment.

Just a note: My hair is normally thin, I'd been babying it for a few years

to grow looking thicker and it was to my waste when I started treatment and

thinned so badly and looked so awful liimp and dull that I cut it all off.

Your hair will grow back after treatment. I used Nioxin every other shampoo

for my hair.

The first time on combo the 3 weeks that were suppose

to be bad were nothing, piece of cake I thought,

tiiiiiill the 4th week and from there got

progressively worse. My Hair not only fell out but

went totally straight overnight had shoulder length

curly hair, like spirals when I went to bed. Woke up

with hair almost to my waist, straight. LOL...I

finally got my wish, always wanted straight hair, went

so far as to have it straightened once.

The hair that grew back between the 2 times on the

combo therapy was coming in curly like before.

i am a hairdresser, and nioxin does not work ,the only thing that can work is if

you take something orally, they have a vitamin called hair and nail vitamin, try

that, but all your doing with nioxin , is waisting your money..and dont worry

,hair always gtows back, mine came back curly, but i shaved it when it started to

fall out by the clumps.i am more concerned about my liver getting better than my

hair comming out, if i could get rid of this virus verses loosing my hair, i

would take the remmision verses the hair growth.

good luck

Connie,

Got my hair cut to about an inch long so I can wear it all messy and hide my

scalp. Also to cut off all the dead feeling hair. Next step is shaving it if

more falls out and wearing hats and scarves . I could never wear a wig--it would

drive me crazy. I itch just thinking about it.

<<> Just curious of anyone knows if hair loss is a given

> on treatment>>

Nope. Some don't even notice any hair loss.

Mostly I just shed and thinned, about the 5th mo thru the 7th or so. Then it

stopped. The 6th mo I cut my waist length hair to about an inch all over my

head and like someone else said on here, I just wear it all messed up now

lol. Very mod!

Everyone's hair reacts differently on treatment. Mine grew back just the

same as it was, but the short hair was so easy to keep I've decided to keep

it short a while.

The Nioxin may not have prevented hair loss, but it did make my scalp feel

better. Nothing is gonna prevent the thinning on treatment if it thins, it

thins. It won't last don't worry.

<<Has anyone heard or used Acidolphilus? >>

I use acidolphilus every time I take antibiotics, which lately is a lot! It

helps put back the bacteria that medication and things can kill and yes

it'll help contering yeast infections and gastro problems cuz lots of good

bacteria live there but some meds just kill them all out along with the bad

bacteria.

Time to go pop another acidolphilus!

hugs all!

There really isn't much you can do. Mine fell out 3 times!! It

started coming back about 3 months after I stopped treatment.

You will notice little by little that your brush has less hair in it and

less hair is falling into the shower. It's great that you had so

much air to begin with. I had to wear hats and a wig!

I hope your labs come back great!!

Speaking of hair. May I change the subject just a little? Since Daryl's been ill, and especially since he was hospitalised, he's slowly but surely losing body hair as well as hair on his head. Does anyone know why this happens? What causes it and is it permenant? Thanks :)

Hi Sandy.....It seems to me that in our society, women of our age are not allowed to have 'greys', hairy legs, or any other hair especially on chin, and that dreaded moustachey look I get if I dont get the tweezers out! My eyebrows are half white & brown so now I have to crayon over the white bits to stop me looking like an appaloosa. Your colleague may have been insensitive and Id politely but quietly return the colour to her saying because of the chemicals in it you are unable to use it until you have clearance from your specialist. Me thinks there's too much pressure on women to look like dolly birds and trying to look permanently 25 & anyone showing even one stray grey would be pounced on (bit of an eggeration). Your colleague wouldnt have even thought about what effect her comments had. It was a flippant remark which I wouldnt take seriously. A cancer sufferer/survivor wouldnt use chemicals on hair whilst taking chemo treatment. I liken our treatment of AIH on a par with chemo drugs but of course at a much much lower dose. Ive been practical bald with ridiculous tufts of hair that refused to do the right thing and fall out. Once my hair grew back I was going to have highlights but my hairdresser refused to do it as she said with my colouring Id look false & artificial. So Im about 50% grey and actually enjoyed it because I had to buy a whole new lot of makeup & some clothes because it made my colouring somewhat paler. Now, after a visit to the doctors I have a semi-permanent put in by the hairdresser which lasts for 30 shampoos. She told me never to colour my hair myself, only to let a professional do it...I suppose because the hairdresser brushes it on rather than smother the whole scalp with the stuff and which the chemicals could be absorbed thru the skin. I only started having semis when my lfts were near normal and havent had any ill effects.

Ann, it sounds like alopecia…an autoimmune disease where you

lose your hair. My cousin had this….

Jan.

Thanks for your words also...The statement you made above will be

the way I will explain to her since she has fought cancer twice

in the eight years I have worked with her. She will be able to

understand it better that way. I am sure she did not intentionally

hurt my feelings..I think she was trying to be nice but she does lack

tact. I do not want her to feel what I felt. I think she will

understand and who knows maybe we can become a little better friends.

All of the people I work with knows about each others illnesses since

we are a small office of less than 25 and we usually try to be there

for each other.

Thanks

Here is one last thought raised about post op issues and then I will be quiet

for a while. Someone had asked about hair growing back. Mine is now a decent

short haircut - 10 weeks after the cut. I have been taking vitamins and my hair

grows pretty fast. I agree that I would cut it all off again before surgery.

But my best piece of advice if you are a brave home colorist is to buy a box of

haircolor that has base color and highlights in same box. I used Loreal Coleur

Experte (in Biscotti)! It comes in a dark red box. You need a friend. You dye

all your hair one darker color then use a mascara looking thing to add

highlights. For some reason the variations in color make the hair look better,

and maybe longer. At the very least, it is a fun activity and gets your mind

off your back while you wonder " Is Biscotti a code word for orange? " It cheered

me up immensely. Have fun...
