Teri,he didn't get it for hep c, he got his disability for a back injury. But, if he told them he had hep c he probably would have gotten it in six months. He had a lot of medical records, he is 53. He did not have an attorney he is here with me now as I am typing. The woman at the SSDI office told him he didn't need one. I said the same thing to get one but he didn't and it paid off. I will tell you the shelter helped him all the way through it. It was a tone of drs. apts. paper work etc. and he did everything they asked and he got it. he kept call SSI office, going over their, giving paper work it was a pain in the ass.He applied September 19, 2009 and received first payment in April 2010. I got

the check deposited for my kids into my bank account via SSDI because I also get it. I was always nagging him for it. I got mine in 3 months Teri, honest to god. It's a long story about me and it has nothing to do with hep c. And, to boot, I applied via phone for it. Also, I had no lawyer either.thankssharonFrom: Theresa Gottlieb <theresagottlieb@...> Sent: Sat, December 4, 2010 1:45:05 PMSubject: Re: Re: [ ] Marie

Sharon,That's pretty quick for Social Security Disability. Most of the time, especially when the diagnosis is Hep C, you have to go thru the appeals process and that can take close to 2 years and you NEED an attorney for that. Your husband is the exception and not the rule. It took me just under 2 years from the time I applied til the time I got my first check. 22 months from application to approval to be exact and 23 months total til I got my first check.

Here in IL the wait for the hearing takes time...  Like over a year, they are that backlogged.  And a back injury is much easier to get SSDI for as well.  I've gone thru this a few times with my ex husband too.  He was approved way back right away then got released to go to work and wound up having to go back on it and that time it took a few years.  That was in Texas.  marie is in CA where the wait time is a bit longer due to the size of the state and the amount of people applying.  An attorney can get that 3rd appeal court date bumped up by several months.

It definitely depends on the medical situation.  Back injuries are pretty clear cut.  Other things, not so much.  Right now things seem to be lining up for marie.  She's gone thru a lot and is quite the trooper.  Now that her housing will be approved hopefully she can get out of that shelter sooner instead of later.  We're pulling for you marie!

Teri,I am just hoping that me being more positive and sober will help him. That's all I can ask for right now and that the hep c is okay with me. He's a good kid. But I know he is probably drinking outside of the house and it bothers me. But I can't control every situation. I just tell him to watch himself. Don't drink and go to college. SharonThe biggest thing that you could learn from Al-Anon, is that you have no control whatsoever with the fact that your son or your husband choose to drink or drug. None. In fact, the more that you harp on it - the more that they will do!! There is absolutely nothing you can say magically, nor is there any type of behaviour you can muster. Nil. Nada.

Of course, you can draw your line and demand that it not be done in your home; but, beyond that, there is nothing you can do. Your son has found the perfect patsy to lay all his blame on and unfortunately, about the only thing you can do about it, is to tell him that he has the right to be angry at you and Dad. Then, say no

more!! From that point on - it is his life!Gloria

Gloria,I know. It's like I am held hostage by him. He does nothing in this house I can assure you that. I would never sit in a house with a minor and let them do anything illegal. But I know he does it outside and I keep telling him to stop. He won't. I don't know what to do. I want him to graduate. I am hoping the hep c hasn't pushed him over the edge. It was not a good time to tell him, but it had to be done. I quit smoking because I wouldn't have him taking my cigarettes. Quit cold turkey on September 14 of this year. Never smoked again. I can't stand the thought of him smoking and doing anything. But what can I do follow an 18 yo around like a stalker mom. I tried everything. I was

just hoping he would realize the bad choices and snap out of it and go to college. Kids are kids they do stupid things even if their parents dont want them to. I am trying to cope with his hep c so I know he is having a hard time. I don't want him drinking, he said he had his right to drink taken away from him by us. My family was horrified. Is that all he is worried about is the alcohol?? That's the addiction he won't listen. We are all trying and praying he snaps out of it graduates, goes to college and stays healthy. That is why I am doing all of this lab work. So I can actually help him while helping myself. I am sorry to say what I said I could throw him out. That would be terrible.

Thanks Teri,

I had a rough patch for about a month, but I am back on track. Its hard to eat, I am really hungry but when I go to eat I can only eat a small amount. But it's all good, I am about 75 lbs overweight and 30 lbs would do nothing but help me at this point. Knowing me I will gain it back as soon as I am off tx. LOL Hopefully not, I like having the weight off. I think a lot of it was stopping drinking coke, I was a coca cola additct for ever. Just drinking water and I do have one cup of coffee every morning it a lot to do with it and the cutting down on my portions. But I just saw my doctor last week and she is just so pleased with me. She showed me where all my labs were from the time I started til now and they are all at normal rage.

These were the only things she is watching...

WBC's AUTO, my result 2.1 standard range 3.5 - 11.0

Platelets, Automated count my result 106 standard range 140 - 440

ALLBUMIN my result 3.8 standard range 4.0 - 5.4

also it said slightly decreased platelets? But she said my thyroid looks great!!

I have been very lucky, I am still working full time and doing everything I did before I started tx. I just take it easy and do nothing on the weekends and get a lot of rest and YES drink the hell out of WATER

Thank you so much for your encouragement and kind words!

Glad you're back on track.  I know it gets rough...  treatment can suck but it's worth it in the end when it works.  Your blood work is a little low but that's normal for where you are in treatment..  it could be a whole lot worse.  I was off coca cola during treatment too.. couldn't handle it.  I lost 100 pounds.. then I found it again.  So happy you are managing this so very well.  I'd have never been able to do the whole child care thing but I guess it's better than having go to an office every day!

Teri,

I have been searching since first being diagnosed about my situation. I haven't found anything about it, Sharon was the first person that I met that had passed it on to her children like me. I kept finding foster mother's dealing with foster kids or adoptive kids with HCV. I wish there were more information and maybe that would help to get kids tested too. When my daughter was diagnosed, the first thing her doctor said was you need to be tested to be ruled out as to how she got it. But for an adult, I was never asked by my first gastro if I had my children tested? Very frustrating for sure, that's why I am hoping when my daughter completes her nursing school she will try to be a Hep nurse. She would have first hand experience :)

CherylUnfortunately, it is still one of those things that is being vastly overlooked!! A great deal needs to be done about educating the medical field, the public and the governments.I read a stat on one of those sites that Don recommended and at least I noticed that the percentile of children born with it, has been raised and so it should worry a whole lot of folks. When I first said anything to a Dr., back in 2002, the stats were only saying a minuscule # of babies contracted it. Less than 1%. Slowly, they are changing there tune.By the way, I still haven't been asked by any of my Drs about my son being tested. Again, the education needs to be done.My step-son and his

wife adopted a little girl that was born alcoholic and drug addicted. I strongly suggested that they make sure that she's been tested; but, you know, to this day I'm really not sure they ever did. They believe that the Drs would test her for everything without being asked and we know that just is not true.Gloria
