I have a question about ssdi - Debbie

Hi Debbie

To my understanding SS will only go back 10 years.

If you havent worked in the last 10 years, you will have to apply for SSI disability.

This is what they did to me.

SSDI comes from your wages for the past 10 years.

SSI is for people who havent worked for the past 10 years.

Either way - get a lawyer.

The lawyer can only take a small amount of your check, one time only.

But a lawyer can hurry things up.

Thanks Teri. I've kinda figured I still could and will go thru a lawyer because I get overwhelmed so easily anymore which makes me very frustrated with myself.> > >> >> > I haven't worked for probably close to 14 yrs. Debbie,

Don is right. You must have so much paid in over the last 10 years to be

eligible. My daughters insignificant other had only worked about a year in the

past 10 yrs. He was denied SSDI and They switched his paperwork to SSI. He

applied in Feb or March and got his first check in June. It is not much--around

$700, but with food stamps, medicaid and housing assistance--it comes to more

than my social security does. And you may get a check for children under

certain circumstances. I printed out the paperwork from my computer and took it

to him. Told him " Apply or out of the house " He has lung disease and had several

hosp stays when he nearly died, so he had good medical backup.

Suzi, I got to looking thru my first try at getting it..my copies. I found that

social security statement you get in the mail periodically and it showed I

earned $300.00 in 2002, so I just might be able to apply for the ssdi. Would be

nice if I could and get it.

Debbie,

Couldn't find exact info on the web. You start by applying for SSDI and they

will check work history and tell you if you qualify. It is more than a few $100

now and then and uses relatively recent rather than overall work history. If

you are not eligible for SSDI, then there is a back-up program called SSI, which

is also a disability program. SSI has restrictions on assets, like how much

money in the bank, what you own (including car), etc. I have no clue what is

available if the disabled person is not eligible for SSDI and is married. You

can own a mansion, have a spouse and be eligible for SSDI because it is based on

work history. SSI is based on need because you are disabled and have few or no

resourses. Just apply and see what happens.
