Oh !

I'm so sorry you are going through this because unfortunately I had to

experience that too. The coffee grounds is actually partially digested

blood. It's not good and it's not healthy. The acid reflux is not good for

your esophagus either. I went through this for SEVERAL months because I

didn't equate the problems to the band (I was pregnant at the time so I

thought it was all baby related). Well..once I had the baby and realized I

was still having all the same problems I *finally* got smart..turned on this

board and saw that this is very common and that I was too tight! An unfill

will help you tremendously. I had my whole fill taken out because I had gone

through so much by having two babies back to back (bandster babies) and I

had let the reflux go on for so long I just wanted a rest and I opted to

keep it out for a full month but if this hasn't happened for too long they

might just be willing to take a bit out. The problem is..the PBing starts

the awful cycle-PB, stoma swells..get tighter..eat and then PB again because

you're too tight..swell even tighter, etc.

Good luck!

Thanks for all the feedback. I have an appointment to have a little bit removed

tomorrow, so hopefully this will solve the problem. I appreciate all the

support!

As an update, I had .2 removed today, and am now able to sip on water. The good

news is that there has been no slippage - my band is still in place. Thanks so

much for everyone's feedback and support. Hopefully I've finally found my

" sweet spot. "

I was told that's actually bile - not blood. But, it's still bad stuff, because

it can cause problems in the esophagus.

Sure Glad you got some of that fill out and you're better!!

You still seem very tight, though - it's always a mistake to try to

get as tight as possible. The goal is to have as LITTLE fill as

possible to still do well - and this requires, of course, some effort

on our parts. We can never totally rely on a fill, and when we get to

goal, most docs will advise a small unfill as we cannot keep a tight

fill forever without getting into the serious longterm Band problems

of erosions, late slips, pouch stretching, esophagus dilation, etc.

Many US docs are just now starrting to lern all this, since few have

had patients out more than a few years until nbow. the longterm bad

effects are well-known in Europe and Australia, where the Band has

been used much longer. The stomach simply cannoty tolerate a tight

fill forever, nad many bands are lost when people try to keep a tight

fill for long. This is why changing the emnotional eating and other

HEAD things is so very important!

With a good fill we should be able to meet all the following pretty

easily:

- Get in the 64-100 oz a day of no-calorie fluids easily

- meet the nutrition goals of 1200-1500 cal a day. Never less.

- 50-60 gm of solid protein daily for women, 60-70 for men

- 25 gm of food fiber a day

- 1200-1500 mg a day of calcium - 1000 for men

- adequate GOOD fats, few BAD fats

- have no trouble with regular barfing, pain, pb's or any other

trouble - banding is not an illness or disease!

- have no constipation or other bowel problems

If people are not able to do all these things, something is wrong

that will get them into trouble soonber or later, and often very

setrious trouble.

would do this on occasion, and it was acid reflux.  It

wasn't Down syndrome related.

Subject: Throwing Up

I've been noticing a lot recently that my daughter Iris, who is 2

years old, will often throw up when she doesn't otherwise appear to be

sick. Afterwards, she just continues to play as if nothing has

happened. I'm wondering if this is related to her low muscle tone.

Today is the second time I have had my workout at the Y interrupted

because of this. I brought her home and she's her usual playful happy

self. She went straight to the kitchen and started signing " eat. "

I've made an appointment to discuss this with her pediatrician, but I

was also wondering if other parents have had experience with this with

their children who have Down Syndrome?

If this is new, then I would have it checked out.

If this is something that has always been happening, it can very well have to do

with the low muscle tone (which is often the reason behind the acid reflux as

well)

Try doing mouth, throat, and swallowing exercises with her, for instance like

the ones done by Castillo Morales therapists are good, but anything that

strengthens the muscles is good. Stomach muscles included!

Fiona outgrew this when she was 6.

When was that age, she would eat until she threw up. She didn't seem

to know when she was full. When I filled her plate, I just guessed how much

food she needed. She finally learned when to stop. I never forced my kids to

clean their plates. I always told them, " When you're full, stop eating. "

Logan, 7, spits up all the time. We have noticed that sometimes he does it on

purpose and others it's not controllable. He spits up numerous times during the

day. Certain foods affect it more... milk, chocolate, red based drinks, WATER..

he throws up everytime he drinks water.

He has had the testing for reflux and it showed nothing. We are stumped. It's

a pain. It's hard to take him anywhere because he spits up all over the place.

Maverick used to do the same.. but he out grew it at a younger age and it was

not to the extent that Logan does it.

It could be reflux. Alot of our kids have it and sometimes it is

silent and they aspirate. Did she have trouble as an infant nursing or

eating?

Thank you all for the helps about nausea . But I'm not nauseated. I quess there

isn't much I can do. Anything I eat has to come back up in a few mins, kinda

like reflux. Last night I hadn't eaten so I was just throwing up water. I don't

know. But I'm not nauseated, just throwing up everything I eat or drink.

TrudyIs there any chance that you have a hiatus hernia?? Last night I thought I was close to choking to death. In an absolute panic state and I live alone.Anyway, all I was eating was an orange. Only, I swear that the hernia came up just as I swallowed the piece of orange. It wasn't pleasant. After it was over, my adrenalin left me shaky and even sleepy for a few minutes.Gloria

Do you know that they actually found my hernia after either a CT scan or an Ultra Sound. It became really bad after my liver surgery. So, now I takes pills for it.Funny thing, the original pills for the hernia, were huge. If anyone has trouble swallowing pills, this would be impossible. Can you imagine - a huge pill to help someone to be able to swallow. Anyway, GP changed my prescription recently and now the pills are really little.Gloria
