Guest guest
, I must have strangest case of thyroid disease or something. I've been diagnosed hyperT and for the last two months I have been taking iron supplements because I started feeling lightheaded all the time. Just like I did before I was diagnosed with anemia. So, I started taking iron and I feel better. I tried stopping the iron but the symptoms reappeared. I'm trying to figure out if I need to change the balance of copper and zinc which now is at a 7:1 ratio. Maybe starting the supplements created the iron problem for me. Guest guest
Deb: How much iron are you taking in ratio to your copper in zinc? ------------------------------------------------------------------------
Guest guest
, I take 45 mg zinc, 8mg copper and 36 mg ferrous sulfate (I'll have to check that to make sure I'm correct.) Last week, though, I discontinued the iron supplement because I am having a blood test Wednesday and I want to see if I am truly deficient in iron and I don't want the supplement to interfere with a proper diagnosis. Maybe the lightheadedness is coming from something else. I don't know, but I do need to find out. A turn of the head can cause off balance and a nauseous feeling. The duration is short but unpleasant. Deb ------------------------------------------------------------------------
Guest guest
Hi Deb: I was changed to 38 mg of Ferrous Gluconate today upon visiting the doctor. He has me to take 500 mg of Vitamin C with the iron. How about that? A Family Practice doctor realizes that Vitamin C is important in helping with the absorption process. Anyway, the office staff endorsed the idea that Ferrous Sulfate is highly irritating to the stomach. If you are having any problems, check another type of iron. I need to be built up for surgery on Thursday. Take care. ------------------------------------------------------------------------
Guest guest
Deb: An additional reply to you with regards to turning your head and feeling off balance and dizzy. Do you have a goiter on your thyroid? If so, it may be pinching some nerves off in your neck. ------------------------------------------------------------------------
Guest guest
This is in regard to this ... that told Deb that dizziness, offbalance spells may be caused by the goiter pinching the nerves in the neck. Has anyone out there had any severe or mild neck problems??? That you thought it can be done by the chiropractor??? This is an interesting answer and I would never thought of that, . I've had neck problems for over a year. I wondered if it really is caused by the thyroid. I'm new to this group and I'd like to hear everyone's responses. Thanks. Guest guest
Hi! I've had neck problems for about 15 years, have been treated by chiropracters, physical therapists, body workers, etc., and no one's really helped me. I don't think it's connected to the thyroid, though, because I got Grave's disease only last year, and my thyroid is now back to normal (and my neck is still bothering me). Is there a connection with JRA and weight lose. she's still doing the ensures three times a day (today she left her ensure home, accident? I think not).also does anyone know of any natural drugs that help with JRA, had a bad day yesterday and had to stay home. Guest guest
Michele, My daughter had a pretty big weight loss also when she first came down with arthritis. Once we got it under control, she seemed to do much better. I know when she is not feeling well, the thought of food makes her sick. When her arthritis went into remission for 5 months she grew 6 inches and put on 20lbs. I think that shows that the arhtritis definately causes the weight loss. I think when you find something that she likes, just let her eat all she wants. Let her tell you what sounds good and what doesn't. My daughter went on a cereal kick for a while. So we would just let her eat bowl after bowl. Right now her appetite is pretty good and we still supplement with Boost. I have a feeling once your daughter's arthritis gets more under control, that her appetite will get better. My prayers are with you...Love, Diane
Guest guest
My daughter, n age 11, was diagnosed with systemic JRA in Nov. of last year. When she lost her weight we just tried to give her lots of fattening foods. Her favorite food in the world is ice cream, so we always had Haagen Das ice cream. Expensive, yes, but she would eat lots of it with chocolate syrup. The only thing that did put the weight on her finally was when we had to put her on steroids. Then she ate everything in sight. We are now tapering down, and her appetite is now normal, and she gained her 10 pounds back. I have brought n to a naturapath to see what they had to offer. I do two things for n. I can't say if it is working though. n is doing great right now. She is in school full time, and has absolutely no arthritis. She is a bit stiff in the morning she says, but one would never know it as she runs down the stairs for breakfast. We made several changes at the beginning of March, and we don't know why she is doing so good, but we aren't changing anything for fear of a flare. At the beginning of March she was put on plaquenil and 20mg of prednisone tapered. Every five days we go down and we are now on 5mg with never any side effects. Also, at the same time I put n on Omega 3 fatty acid pills, and 2 tbspns. of flax seeds. The naturapath we go to has JRA and has never outgrown it. He said he does lots of different things, but if he doesn't take these everyday, he can tell the difference. Like I said, I can't honestly tell you that they are making a difference, because we have changed too many things at the same time. But my husband who is quite skeptical of naturapaths, doesn't let me miss her doses of the fish pills and flax seeds. Flax seeds are also high in omega 3 fatty acids. We may look back and think that we were so stupid for trying this stuff, but our philosophy is that if it doesn't hurt her , we will try it. (And there is some scientific evidence for the justification of it) Good luck. Guest guest
Hi Bonnie, I hope you don't mind that I'm replying to you on the list. That way others can see this info, too. It might be helpful for some here and I don't think tincture of yellowdock has ever been mentioned here, before. Sometimes these sorts of supplements are just as good, or better, than prescribed items. Like you said, sometimes there are fewer side effects. Last time anemia was an issue for Josh, the pediatrician said it looked as if he may have an inherited condition called thallysemia(sp?). Certain of his blood cells are actually smaller than normal ones should be, and it may be related to his body's misuse/misabsorption of iron. That's why despite a healthy diet and even when he was taking high iron supplementation, his blood work was still skewed. I think anemia is part of the whole parcel of systemic JRA. I'm not sure if it's as common in the pauci and polyarticular types. Do you know? We haven't personally tried any of the magnet treatments. Some people do swear by them, though. I'll be interested to hear about how it works with Alana. Do let us know. I hope it helps. I think someone here posted about positive results from using a magnetic bed-mattress cover? What is your take on theories behind why they might work? Much Aloha, Georgina Bonnie wrote: > > Georgina, > You may want to try using tincture of yellowdock. Guest guest
Geogina, I'll let you know what's going on...... this has been a really crazy week. I did an experiment this month and did not use the yellowdock to see if it made a difference... she is much more anemic this month, but her sed rate that had come down to 25 when she was on 20 mg of pred every other day as we weaned the pred down to 5mg every other day went sky high to 128 so who knows if that sent the anemia up or the yellowdock non use? It's so hard to see what works and what doesn't. Alana's fingers were very swollen and the doc is upping her mtx which I'm really unhappy about, he put her on sub q , the pediatrition administered it Friday , but I'm soloing on next Friday (thank god my good friend is a nurse practitioner and will watch me next week to make sure I'm doing it right In terms of the nutritional supplements, I'm working with the owner of a nutrition company I work with that you really need to be a doc to work with them. He's been doing a lot of work with auto immune problems and is helping me out. We just started today on a new program. He wants to totally saturate Alana's system with good nutrition, protein, good EFA's, etc. After a week we'll see how she feels and than start adding some other things to the mix. I'll let you know how that works. Till I know and see, I don't want to give info out to you guys, let me do this experimentation. In terms of the magnets, we'll see. We put her on bracelets, insoles and will be putting a bed pad on the bed tonight. My feeling on why magnets work is a few things. Magnets increase the circulation in the body. When you have arthritic joints the blood is not moving through the system well, you get cold fingers and toes and you see purple joints, the magnets should help that. Like I said, we are just starting them and I will make my judgements in a month. Will keep you posted. I will tell you that the MTX really throughs Alana for a loop, she sleeps on Saturday till around 1 oclock and then back for a nap a few hours later, it really wastes the entire day. Rhem is talking about adding Embrel to the mix to get her off the pred, anyone do that with postitive effects? Guest guest
Michele, This most likely has nothing to do with your daughters weight loss, but has she been tested for parasites? My son lost major weight, the doctors said they had tested for everything ... but it turned out he had Giardia for months. It is believed that the Giardia " trigged " the JRA. Guest guest
Ray they have always had me on a low iron diet. My iron levels are always high so don't want me to have more. They even checked me for hemochromotosis. I am no doctor but you should do what your doc recommends. If you have questions contact them and tell them your concerns. Maybe he is unaware of to much iron or maybe because of yur other problems this is better for you. Good luck, the WV hillbilly
Guest guest
There is information available online, though each situation is different.. This is from the liver foundation. Sheena http://www.liverfoundation.org/db/articles/1084 Iron and hepatitis C The liver plays an important role in the metabolism of iron since it is the primary organ in the body that stores this metal. Patients with chronic hepatitis C sometimes have an increase in the iron concentration in the liver. Excess iron can be very damaging to the liver. Studies suggest that high iron levels reduce the response rate of patients with HCV to interferon. Patients with chronic HCV whose serum iron level is elevated, or who have cirrhosis, should avoid taking iron supplements. In addition, these patients should restrict their intake of iron-rich foods, such as red meats, liver, and iron-fortified cereals, and should avoid cooking with iron-coated cookware and utensils. carol regina <carolregina2001@...> wrote: MY FRIEND WHO HAS HEP C, HAS LOW IRON...I THINK DOC GAVE HER IRON PILLS....
