Hello Jan

In reference to your comment:

having hard time with Fruit now....even watermelon...anyone else have problems with fruit..Jan

Jan, fruit is a no no for me too and I believe a lot of other

have problems with it also. I even blended an apple into

mush and that didn't even stay down.

Weird huh?

Jan,

Fruit is often a problem. When you chew it does not always break up into small mushy pieces that will go through. I now just make smoothies with my fruit or cook them till they are soft. Fruit is often too acid for many people.

I remember when I was first diagnosed with A and I told the doctors I

had trouble with fruits--ESPECIALLY watermelon and bananas--and they

would give me a puzzeled look. (we who have A. get used to that look

don't we?) But after the sugery, I can eat them but I must be careful

not to eat too fast.

Jan,

Can you make a fruit smoothie in a blender?

There are some yummy combinations, like banannas and strawberries and orange juice.

What's really wierd is, I don't have a problem eating

fruit. Especially watermelon. The more I read the

more I wonder cuz I can eat a lot of food that

everyone else has a problem with, like rice. Granted

beef is a little " tough to swallow sometimes " . Only

thing I'm starting having a problem with is Tootsie

Rolls!

I, too, have trouble eating almose any fruits and I

haqve always loved fruit! even applesauce has trouble

going down! I have found that diced canned peaches

mixed with cottage cheese work pretty well so I think

canned pears would too. Fruit smoothies work ok and

when I mixed applesauce into my oatmeal it worked ok

too. I am just starting week 6 after surgery.

I eat 1/2 a banana with my cereal 3 times a week in the morning.

It is hard to eat any fruits, and they have high carbs. So chose the ones with

the lower carbs if you can eat them and it is the best AM.

I eat pretty much any fruits... banana cut up in my cereal, 1/4'd

apple with cheese and crackers at lunch, apple and grapes cut up into

green salad, cantaloupe or honeydew for breakfast, a bowl of berries

with a little yogurt for a snack.

Yes, we should eat fruits. As to which and when, that's up to you. I don't do

pineapple as it is too stringy and gets stuck. Same, for me at least, with

skins like on peaches and apples. They sort of wad up and get stuck.

But each is different. And yes, fruits are generally higher calorie than

vegetables, but we still need both. Just make wise choices. Plus, they have a

lot fewer calories than chocolate ice cream. Or pizza.

I'm still on liquids after my surgery (4/12/07). But if I have a

strawberie or 2, is it really terrible? I mean, what is the whole

reason for being on liquids for a whole 2 weeks anyway? I've tried and

I can eat soft foods already, can I start? Or do I have to wait the

whole 2 weeks? I am hungry when I'm just on liquids and it's getting

harder and harder.

You're trying to cheat yourself? If you were told 2 weeks stick to that. You'll

only hurt yourself. It might feel like you can eat solids but you're not

completely healed. If you are not following the rules now what will happen 5

years from now?

The reason that Dr. Kuri asks us to do the 2 weeks is to give the stitches time

to heal.

When you add the pressure of more solid foods it could cause a problem with

your healing.

If you want to have something like strawberries I would definately put them in

the magic bullet or something so they will be thin enough to go through. Better

to stick to the guidlines to set yourself up for a sucessfull band experience.

There is always a reason for the instructions given to us. Good luck

gene,

you hit the nail on the head.

mary-anna29, what is the purpose of not following instructions? has

that worked for you in the past? i highly doubt it. you wouldn't be

why the heck are you negotiating your eating so early in the

change your attitude immediately!!!!!! and follow instructions you

were given. and stop trying to outsmart your physician.

anna,

I thought the same thing when I was on liquids. They call this part

of the bandster experience " Bandster Hell " for good reason. I

learned that even though eating just a little bit of real food should

seem fine, the point of being on liquids is allowing your stomach to

heal without churning around and disrupting your sutures. If you

don't let the sutures heal completely before making your stomach

work, you could have a slip later down the road.

We don't need to jump to the conclusion that anna wants to " eat

like crazy " , folks. It's just really, really hard to get through the

liquids only part. We've all been there. And a lot of surgeons

don't explain WHY the post op diet is the way it is, they just say to

do it. It really helps if you know why it's important, it makes it a

lot easier to stick to the rules.

Hang in there, girl! You'll make it.

Gwen,

i have heard a lot of people refer to " bandster hell " . in my opinion

its balogna. or perhaps, just plain BS.

its all about being undisciplined (which, interestingly, is why we're

here in the first place). we can't stand not stuffing ourselves with

whatever feels good.

when one goes to the trouble, expense and risk to have surgery, even

for lapband, and then decides that they know better, its incredible.

why not just eat M & M's. they're virtually liquid when they go

down. no way will they hurt the healing process or get stuck on the

way down. no pb's for m & m's. and you can eat them to your hearts

delight. of course, you'll gain weight. but , what the heck. one

can then absolutely prove that the band doesn't work. Success!!!!

frankly, when i hear someone say, what the heck would two

strawberries hurt when they are strictly forbidden, i see red.- there

is absolutely no excuse for this thinking.

let's grow up here and do the right thing.

I disagree, . Adult human beings are intended to eat solid

food, not pure liquids. When we have to subsit on only liquids for

medical reasons, it is no fun. Yes, we have to do it, and it's the

right thing, but that doesn't make it any less difficult.

Your point is well taken that we need to be realistic and blunt with

ourselves about our eating behaviors that led us to this point. I'm

just saying that until the rationale for the long liquid and puree

diet is explained, it's easy to think that something small and soft

might be OK. Once you understand the reason, it makes sense and is

much easier to stick to.

I just went through the hell period, and it was hell, for different

reasons than you list. I won't minimize that for anyone else. And

as an RN, I have a realistic view of doctors, and don't blindly

follow their advice without having a rationale for it. (If I did, I

would have a lot of dead patients, believe me. I work in a teaching

hospital.) They are human. So having the reason is important, just

hearing a doctor say the words is not enough. Not all docs give the

reason. (Mine does, and it all makes perfect sense.)

And even if it is just about being undiciplined, change can be

painful, even when it's necessary. Geez, we're only humans. No one

said this stuff was easy. I think that's why we're here, to support

each other through the process.

I have to agree with you about " Bandster hell " . Personally " bandster

hell " is not following the rules, eating too fast, puking it up and

being in extreme pain.

That's agony!!

The liquid diet is hard to follow but not painful. The above

mentioned is far more excruciating!!

If you start puking before you heal...I could only imagine how much

that will hurt!!

Everyone here knows how hard it is to stop thinking " fat " . Even now,

a year after banding, I forget I can't eat the way I used to. I

would think that in the beginning there would be a lot more

motivation to stick to the rules. If you start slipping from the

beginning, what's the point?

It's a difficult journey..... but you're not alone!

Gwen,

when the post-op instructions say one thing, it is not

understandable to do another. even if you don't understand why the

instruction was given.

we're told not to lift more than ten pounds in the early weeks after

this surgery. if you don't know why, is it okay to lift 50 pounds?

by the way, the pure liquid phase is not " hell " . it is defined as

anything one could sip through a straw. that means anything you can

dilute with broth in a blender is okay.

i took weight watchers 5 cheese lasagna , added grated parmesan

cheese and put it in the blender. i added enough chicken broth to

thin it out to the right consistency. it was delicious and on

program.

i also took many chuncky soups, added canned meat like little vienna

hot dogs. added broth, in the blender and another delicious meal.

during the full liquid phase, i ate to my hearts delight. but

everything fit within the guidelines.

it just takes a little imagination. not a couple of strawberries

because " how could they hurt " .

if one comes to this site for support, they should at least be in

the game.

I agree :)

When I was on liquids the first day or 2 near killed me !!! And then

it dawned on me that it was the texture/consistancy that mattered.

So over the next 2 weeks I gave my Magic Bullet and blender a

serious workout :)

For the most part I stuck to Cambells Chunky Soups, well

blended....but I also ate chicken, mashed potatoes and gravy,

blended with enough broth to make it runny. YUM !! :)

Altho humans may indeed prefer solid foods, a couple of weeks of

liquids isn't going to hurt or harm any one of us. And ya

know...when I was on liquids and felt like giving in to the 'urge'

to eat something I would remind myself that it was *years* worth of

giving into food related urges that made me morbidly obese, so maybe

fighting those urges for a measly 2 weeks wasn't the end of the

world :)

All the best,

I replied to this in the first place because someone wanted a simple

explanation as to why the post op instructions are the way they are.

That seems like a simple request.

I'm glad things went so perfectly for you and that you have such

awesome dicipline or complience or whatever. I personally felt like

I had swallowed a fishbowl for the whole 2 weeks--my belly sloshing

around full of my liquid " meals " and the 64 oz. water I was drinking

per day as per my instructions. That sloshy feeling wasn't fun. Of

course I stuck it out because that is what you do when you have those

instructions. I was still hungry but so full of liquid I couldn't do

anything about it.

I don't think it helps when someone who just had surgery asks a

pretty simple question and the rest of the group jumps all over her

and says she is " just eating like crazy " . Questions can be answered

without making a person feel bad for asking it. If you think the

question means that the asker " isn't in the game " or isn't committed

to the lap band process, that's fine, but try to be a little

understanding and don't make assumptions about what their motivations

or committment is.

Gwen,

Thanks for commenting on this... This issue has been bothering me

for awhile now.. I was unsure as to how to approach this... I felt

as if some had a superior self rightous attitude. People come here

for support and to ask questions. I am not encouraged to ask

questions when I feel I might be critized for doing so.. If I knew

all the answers and knew how to get through all my struggles then I

wouldn't be here asking for help. Some people here don't have all the

answers and aren't perfect on this journey. We learn as we go.Seems

like alot of judgement going on and not alot of understanding or

real help being offered. Everyone here are at different stages of

this journey. Some here have dealt with the emotional aspects that

contributed to the weight gain and others haven't yet.So for those

who have this all figured out and know all the answers that is

wonderful maybe you could share some helpful information to those of

us who don't have it all figured..

I have spent too many years beating myself up for not being

perfect I sure don't want to experience that from a support group.I

am hoping there is way to give helpful information without making

someone feel bad.

Just my 2cents

Thanks
