Hydrogen Breath test for SIBO

Hi o,

A couple of days ago I asked the same question in this group. At least

I think a hydrogen breath test is the same as a fructose breath test.

Rich gave me some valuable information that I will paste in this email.

You are doing this test to detect SIBO; is this the same as Leaky Gut

Syndrome?

Hi Mariska:

I think that they are different tests.

In the SIBO test, you drink a solution containing lactulose, a

non-digestible sugar. If bacteria are excessive in the small

intestine, they will ferment the challenge drink, producing hydrogen

and methane. Some of the gas is reabsorbed into your bloodstream and

carried to your lungs through capillaries. The breath test looks for

increased hydrogen and methane in your exhaled breath to indicate the

presence and degree of bacterial overgrowth.

I don't know about the fructose breath test, but it seems that it is

used to detect hereditary fructose metabolism disorders.

The SIBO test is different from the leaky gut or intestinal

permeability test.

In the leaky gut test, you drink a solution containing two

non-metabolized sugars, lactulose and mannitol and then collect an

urine sample which will measure the amount of lactulose and mannitol

left in the urine. This will tell you the small bowel mucosal integrity.

So, basically in the SIBO test you collect breath samples and in the

leaky gut you collect an urine sample for a certain amount of time.

Regards,

o
