Guest guest
It may be the combo, but most likely the Inulin. How much are you using? Should start with 1/2 teaspoon and increase slowly. Guest guest
I'm glad someone else asked about this! I ordered Inulin after reading such rave reviews here. I rarely have discernable or smelly gas but the inulin really blows me up and it smells foul as well. Does not smell/sound like healing is going on in my intestines from this! I started with 1 teas 1@day but will go try a trace amount for a while to see if it gets any better. Francie --------------------------------- Looking for earth-friendly autos? Guest guest
Francie, gas is a normal product of fermentation of sugars in the whey or the inulin. It goes away but may take ten days or more for the probiotic organisms to subdue it just as it takes time to control antibiotic-associated diarrhea and eliminate lactose intolerance. According to some research the gas is from something that fermented four to ten hours or even longer beforehand. The bowel starts to move in response to the new meal and it dislodges the previously manufactured gas so it is resleased; this complicates identifying the source of the discomfort. We have discussed gas previously and people are expecting it and going with the gas in order to get well. Some people can use a lot of whey and inulin and not have any discomfort while others practically inflate so have to ramp up rather than dive in to the program. It cannot be the sugar in the inulin or whey that is causing the gas. It has to be the inulin itself. This is evident because most of us never had such bad gas problems before starting the duncan protocol with inulin, even though we were eating carb heavy food before we discovered we had candida. I know when I used to cheat, way back when, a piece of cheese cake would not give me any gas and that is all sugar. 2 tsp of inulin however will make me fart 20 times an hour everytime. greg
Guest guest
Tungland mentions that some of the neutral bacteria probably fluorish initially and produce gas, in his Comprehensive Scientific Review; probably a referenced statement. This is supposedly short- term, enhanced by FOS, which ferments quickly, and adds to gas produced by the carbs. There's not much inulin in whey to give the gas so I blamed sugar for the gas from both whey and inulin as being in common. We have lots of people who do bloat on sugar and starch in this group; anyone else have continuing gas from the inulin after a few months? I'll contact that company again to see if they're going to sell long- chain inulin. Duncan > > > > Francie, gas is a normal product of fermentation of sugars in the whey > > or the inulin. Guest guest
>anyone else have continuing gas from the inulin after a few months? It's been about 7 weeks for me and the gas has been the only downside of the deal. Of course I was doing the 20-25 gram plan for the first 5 weeks for rapid bifido growth and have backed down recently and so has much of the wind. Mind you it is not accompanied by the spaced-out feeling like when candida is running the show so I've still felt very clear and better than ever. I just wonder if going the long chain inulin route would help alleviate this side effect. It would be a pity if people gave up on the general low carb, whey, selenium, inulin protocol being followed by many in this group with great success because of being overly concerned about some flatulence. In the mean time, suffice it to say nobody dares pull my finger in my part of the woods;)! > > I'll contact that company again to see if they're going to sell long- > chain inulin. Guest guest
Wow! I just got back online after posting the gas on whey post to see so many replies. Glad to hear other people are experiencing it too (just to confirm I'm having a " normal " reaction). I did a presentation last night and by the end of it looked five months pregnant!! Ouch. I'm doing 1 tsp. of inulin 2x a day and back off the whey and yes still getting gas, not as bad with the whey added. Will do the titrating way and increase gradually. Makes sense, Duncan about the fermeneted foods being activated. I guess the gas can be an indication that there is candida? Glad I just broke up with someone, I couldn't endure this while being with humans! My cats get a bit spooked some though... > > > > I just started the regime of inulin twice a day and the Source Naturals > > Whey I got from Duncan's site. And OH MY GOD. Guest guest
The research is pretty clear that neither candida nor the pathogens can use inulin, but mentions neutrals that can probably use it. We know that many organisms can use the sugars (and FOS) in the whey and the inulin; the neutrals are only marginally explored territory because the science dealt with the pathogens and the beneficials first. So, gas production does not directly implicate candida but it does indicate that neutrals are fluorishing, which means that the acidity level is not quite enough to curb their growth. This leaves a fairly high probability that candida, which is also sensitive to acidity created by probiotics, still could exist in fairly high numbers. Note that some naturopaths assume there is a bowel candida fluorish when there is dysbiosis, unless it can be proven otherwise; I can see their point. The solution for 96% of people with dysbiosis is to keep eating the high-inulin foods and/or supplementing with inulin powder. The whey and selenium is also important on an ASAP level for general tissue, immune system, and bowel health. Duncan > I guess > the gas can be an indication that there is candida? Guest guest
My personal experience was that I could not tolerate the native inulin at all, got constipated. With long chain I got gas occasionally for about 2 weeks, once things seemed to colonise settle in I don't get it. However if I would eat anything to feed pathogens I would go through a few days of gas again. FYI I also had a hydrogen breath test done for glucose and another for fructose. Gluscose was fine, fructose sent hydrogen levels up. So thats prob why I cannot tolerate the native inulin. Actaully Duncan what would you say that is if you are fine with glucose but the test is positive with fructose? Thanks Phil > > > > > > I just started the regime of inulin twice a day and the Source > Naturals > > > Whey I got from Duncan's site. And OH MY GOD. Guest guest
Hi Phil, Seems you might have narrowed down which bacteria are affecting you seeing how they all use different foods at different speeds. I wouldn't have thought there'd be a big diff between fructose and glucose but there you have it. It is interesting and to be expected that the gas is less on long- chain inulin. The hydrogen producers should be temporary so if you can do it, continue with what inulin you can manage and they'll disappear as bowel acidity increases, which they can't tolerate.
