Not sure you've seen this, so thought I'd pass it on. CBS is attacking your

right to supplements!

On January 15th and 16th, 2007, CBS aired a two-part special on the dangers of

herbal and diet supplements. However, their specific brand of irresponsible

journalism made sure to confuse the issue in hopes of demonizing the entire

supplement industry as a whole. Specific points of the piece that concern us

are:

CBS portrayed natural supplements as ineffectual and dangerous even though

this is not the truth. The necessity of vitamins and other micronutrients to

the human body is based on solid scientific evidence found in every Biology

and Biochemistry textbook in the world.

CBS chose to ignore the hundreds of scientific studies that confirm the

positive role nutritional supplements play in maintaining human health and

preventing disease. These studies are being conducted all the time, and are

being published in well respected, peer reviewed scientific journals

worldwide.

Throughout the piece, CBS purposefully used “herbal supplements,” “diet

supplements,” and “supplements” interchangeably. This malicious use of

ambiguity undermines the industry, as CBS used the herbal and diet segments to

launch an attack on the industry as a whole.

The program leads viewers to believe that since nutritional supplements

don’t need FDA approval, that they are indeed not regulated and are therefore

dangerous. This is not true, as The Dietary Supplement Health and Education

Act of 1994 (DSHEA) ensures that the FDA regulates the supplement industry,

thus protecting consumers.

The fact that CBS is so staunchly against consumers taking natural supplements

leads us to believe that their loyalty lies with the pharmaceutical advertisers

who spend hundreds of millions of dollars in advertising each year. Since

natural supplements are not patentable, although extremely safe and effective,

the pharmaceutical industry sees them as a direct threat to their health

monopoly. Meanwhile, the proper use of pharmaceutical drugs is the fourth

leading cause of death in America, causing over 106,000 deaths annually.

Thank you for that information Sharon

I am really going to work at getting all to see that the " money " behind claims

that vitamins are unsafe is founded in not being able to control that industry.

They are going to continue to do that with herbs more in the near future. Herbs

are very hard to control when you have many of the big health boost growing

along the side of a road or in you backyard like we have. I am waiting for the

time when it is against the law to grow anything other then a flower.

I also know that in all things that are not done by your hand and even then,

contamination occurs. Overall the industry does do a very good job with things.

I know that Now Brand...my personal fav, has many many many controls to protect

us.
