When I did research, I found that echinacea was not an immune booster, but an immune enhancer, so it was OK for autoimmunes. Also, says my naturopath, for short periods of time, like for colds, it is OK to take things to fight the colds, even Zinc (I still have reservations about that one, though). Hope this helps... Hey, Pam...we can really confuse everybody now. :-) And I'm right down here in Oregon. :-) Yes, this is a hard one, immune system vocabulary. Arlene, tell me what you think. We have an auto immune disease, so we do not want to stimulate the immune system, because there we produce more antibodies, which will make our Graves worse. But we do want to strengthen out immune system to get better. On this subject Elaine recently recommended: healthy diet and immunomodulators ( what's this ?) mushrooms German Chamomile beta glucans ( what's this ?) Been meaning to look these up. May be you know. Also, I have read that echinacea was bad for Graves several places. So now we must figure the word 'booster' and 'enhanced' into all of this. HELP ! Pam, have you read the info at ithyroid.com on the whole zinc issue ? Seems it needs to be in balance with the copper, and Graves people are low on copper. But we could get lost in this and overlook the fact that a good healthy diet, NO junk food at all, lots of water, a more stress free lifestyle, and getting your thyroid levels closer to normal needs to be your main focus. Just finding a magic pill is not working on the problem at all. LOL Oh boy, you are asking the wrong person about the immunomodulators (that's a totally new one for me too!) or the beta glucans. I know my naturopath also felt it was OK for me to be on echinacea. (However, I wouldn't take it for longer than around 10 days) She prescribed the following for me: Echatin plus - contains: astralagus root, codonopsis root, echinacea proprietary blend (herb & root), licorice root, ligustrum fruit, reishi mushroom body, schisandra berry, shitake mushroom body. I was supposed to take this every day. However, since I have so many food sensitivities, after taking this for a day, I was very very sick for three days, so I discontinued it. On the other hand, she also prescribed something which is homeopathic for my immune system (this should not be harmful to anyone, if you can get hold of it): Immugen - " Homeopathic forumlation, for temporary relief of fatigue and other symptoms due to illness or stress " This is made by PROGENA, in Albuquerque, N.M. What I personally have been doing, when finding myself coming down with a cold, is taking echinacea and Vitamin C for two days. I don't feel comfortable taking just the zinc alone, without upping my copper. This usually wards off a cold for me. Transfer Factor can be rotated though as you get a large burst of immune system activation in just a few days, so you can stop it for a week to ten days after taking it for four. For best effect take the maximum dose. I read that it prevents the candida from becoming immune. Keen Immune boosters Has anyone found they have to rotate their immune boosters as well as their antifungals to maintain improvement?
