I think there is also an Alzheimers drug that has recently caused alleged

deaths in a clinical trial. I am interested to know more about that one. If

anyone has a link to that information I would like to see it. Feel free to

email me at pasty if you don't want to post it. I gave serious consideration

to having mother with a trial on one of the meds. I kept seeing part of the

information on the crawler on one of the news stations last night but each

time it came on, there was a cut to a commercial or some such break and I

never did see the whole story. If I am correct, I think it's one of the

dtugs already on the market. I am looking it up but have yet to find it.

Hope these ppl will have a full recovery. I read the part about where one of

the young med took the study to earn money to pay bills. What an awful

outcome he and his girlfriend have suffered!

Not positive, but I think it was name brand Aricept. I had hoped someone

else had seen the trailer at the bottom of the screen because it was the

only one I saw and just a glimpse of it. I hope it isn't the one, cause I

have known a few ppl who were really helped by it so I hope I saw it wrong

on the tv.

Later:

Actually I just talked to Bill about it and he said it was Aricept. I guess

it's another Vioxx type situation only with Aricept, the person with the

disease can't usually make decisions about whether they want to take it. : (

hugs and thanks for your reply

I happened to be at our friends house in Calgary when the news came on and they

were reporting this disaster. My first question was, " Did they even test it on

animals? "

It looks like someone was really asleep at the wheel on this test.

Yeah I read on some site or other that the tragedies didn't happen in a new

testing. It had been tested on ppl previously but not with the same bad

results, from what I read. I would forward it to the group, but I am not

sure where I read it. I will try to find the press release, which I think I

read on AOL, and post it to the group. It is truly a tragedy.

But my question is: if this is really an isolated incident or is it just one

that the press got ahold to? You know that so many things are tried in the

press and not in court as well as making mountains out of mole hills, done

regularly byt the press. They have to have a sensation somewhere in order to

make a name for themselves and their company. (We know there have been

literary prizes awarded in the past to ppl who finalged the facts and came

up with a sensational story.).

I can name a few dozen examples of this off the top of my head but it might

not be as interesting to ppl here as it is to me. I took Jounralism in high

school and one of the first things I learned was techniques used to dupe the

ppl. Our press is a master at it though I am by no means saying this isn't a

tragedy, just that it may happen all the time, but we just don't know about

it.

I hope if this is going on at a great rate thatit will be made known to the

public. Sort of sounds like something out of a sci fi thriller to be honest

widja.

hugs to all

From what I read in the papers this morning they had tested it on animals first.

What I want to know is why they gave the drug to so many at the same time.

Surely it would have been safer to have injected one person then wait to see if

there was any reaction before giving it to anyone else. I also think that the

young men were only thinking of the financial rewards, not the possible dangers,

but that's just my opinion. My eldest when he was short of cash said he was

thinking of 'volunteering'. Bank of Mom bailed him out needless to say. On the

other hand would anyone put themselves forward for a phase one trial with no

reward. The newspaper said phase one was only to test the toxicity of the drug.

One things for sure, they need to look at their protocols for testing.

Hi Angie

I have thoughts on this and thank God that they did not do a much bigger test

group than they did. Yet I wonder what went wrong and where. Did somebody

fudge the numbers on the animal testing or are we seeing the emergence of

something in animals that protects them against some drugs? We have seen such

twiddling of numbers and reports from scientists to many times in the last few

years.

As for our shared health problems, I do believe that the answer and the cure,

lies in our own bodies but we do not attract the research dollars other diseases

do. We really have to find ways to get the message out.

Blessings to all

The original article was posted in what Rick sends to us in the Current News

items. That is where I read about it last week. There had been prior trials

done and there had been no bad effects. It was a shock to the researchers as

it was to the rest of us.

I don't know if I can repost the information but it is in the items Rick

posted on the Mrch 16 list. That is where I read it. The addy is

There is a trial recruiting in my area...Peg. Inteferon & Ribavirin with

Fluvastatin in treatment-naive type 2 & 3 . So, Don, what do you know about

this? And , Gloria, would you reccomend taking part in trial ? I have insurance,

but this would negate all those co- pays & shares that insurance won't cover.

Just wondering... And wanting y'alls opinions....
