Guest guest
Hi! My son is on metho-textrate but only once per week - seems to help but he hates taking it so much. He is on naproxyn twice daily on top of that though. Gail > > > > Hi my name is and I live in Omaha, Ne. My son (we call him > > Bubba!)is 15mo. and was recently diagnosed with systemic Jra. Guest guest
Hi , My name is also ! And, we are not that far from each other. I live near Lawrence, KS. About 4 years ago we went to Omaha for a regional JRA conference. The kids got to go to the Henry Doorly Zoo and had a blast. Anyway, my 12 yr old has been on MTX for about 8 or 9 months and it has helped her quite a bit. She has Oligo Extended JRA. She was diagnosed at the age of 8. I hope things get better for you and for Bubba.--- & Elaney(12 JRA, heart defects, scoliosis) & Elyssa(8 mild Tourette's Syndrome) Rae <pure3407princess@...> wrote: Hi my name is and I live in Omaha, Ne. Guest guest
Dear All, For those who are considering the NTPA convention go to my files section for more information. I won't have files until more information is available. This is a quote from the NPTA site: " Keynote Sessions Detailed information on the Keynote Sessions will be available soon. " Both AAPT and NPTA conventions are in August 2008. CSHP is in October near Disneyland! ASHP is in Summer and December I don't have more info on those yet either. Anyone have any on the tristate this year? Guest guest
Thanks Fred! I got to thinking that if it were really balanced I would have shared my involvement with two other Associations so here it is: I did not point out what I have done for CSHP or NPTA. For CSHP I have served as an officer (Delegate) for CSHP for 3 years and spoke at the conventions. I network there and donate at the silent auctions. For NPTA I served as the Today's Technician Content/Contributing and CE editor for almost 4 years. I wrote articles and CE's in the Today's Technician . I donated to the Technician Advocacy Group, Spoke at Conventions. For ASHP I have attended some seminars and answered surveys. For APhA I do not belong, but plan to attend a convention some day! I try to disseminate as much information about the upcoming conventions of each as I can. Guest guest
Hi Everyone, Yes as all Technicians are different in what they are looking for, so are organizations to belong. In most cases, it is a good idea to belong to an organization that is closely related to your vocation or in this case, the Pharmacy Technician profession. Currently there are two American and one Canadian national organization of which you may want to investigate and see if they meet your individual needs. Which answers the question, which one to belong is simply which one you find to your own liking as they do differ and are not necessarily for everyone. The National Pharmacy Technician Association or NPTA The American Association of Pharmacy Technicians or AAPT The Canadian Association of Pharmacy Technicians or CAPT There are also state Pharmacist organizations which usually offer a Pharmacy Technician component of which would be closer to home and may meet your needs better. An example would be the Washington State Pharmacy Association or WSPA Things to consider are cost of belonging to the organization and am I getting my money's worth? Does this organization really care about our vocation or is this organization appearing to be just in need of my money and nothing more? Do I have a say in this organization? Again, everyone is different in what they want or do not want as far as being a member in a particular organization. Once you find an organization, then you should also try to be active and participate to help that organization in the promotion of our profession as this is what being part of an organization should be about. Realize one can also belong to several organizations and not just one. You have certainly progressed very well, so you are able to work hard, have cheats now and again, and not become dysfunctional. That's very very well done my friend! Keep up the good work. You are always so very welcome Doug. How is Marina doing? The best to you, Bee
Guest guest
Wow Van, I had no idea you needed a revision. I know it's a lot of money, maybe he'll cut you a deal. In the long run it will be worth it health wise. Let me know how it goes and when your scheduled. I lost 97 lbs. I would like maybe 25 more. I'm at 164 at 5'9. I really need to work out. Still battling addictions. Drinking and smoking. Scarey. How is your diet? Can you eat pretty much anything or are there some foods you can't tolerate? What's been your biggest challenge? Guest guest
Dear , You are very, very lucky that you will be handling med carts at all! Due to liability issues every person who handles a medication or medical equipment must be a healthcare worker and employed. Volunteers run many errands, perform reception work or relief, greeting/directing guests, making sure patient has filled in correct responses to paperwork for entrance to the hospital, file paperwork etc. But with HIPAA laws the hospital may also have to have employees do these tasks. Some do tasks in the cafeteria: stack plates and stock silver and plastic ware, some work in the gift shop stock, run the register. Years ago volunteers used to be the ones who transported the patients out of the hospital at discharge in wheelchairs or took a patient back to a waiting room for an emergency room doctor. Some volunteers site wit neonates and peds patients to give them comfort and attention. Some help with geriatric patients for the same reasons. Some feed patients, again that depends upon liability issues and policy. There are few hospital pharmacies that use volunteers any more. So PLEASE keep us informed as to what you are doing and will be doing in the hospital volunteer department. My best advice is 1. LEARN the ins and outs of the hospital in order to deliver items the FASTEST 2. Learn all that you can that occurs between departments and how they depend upon each other as well as the independant things they do 3. LEARN the names of everyone from top to bottom of the hospital which is a community or family in and of itself. 4. LEARN the hospital extention numbers, how to answer the phone and what to do during a fire. 5. Above all keep confidentiality! Recall HIPAA at all times. Also recall all of the above is going to transfer in the pharmacy too. So if you ever land an interview for an open tech position at that hospital, you can speak of all that you know of the hospital and the less they will have to teach you. Sell your self by the fact that you already know the departments, the people/workers, the operations between the departments, the ext numbers, how to put out a fire etc. Attend any open conference at the hospital about any disease that they may have. Make sure it is open to the public. Get to know the pharmacy staff. Do not tell your life story. And do not try to " sell yourself' to the pharmacy unless it is a formal interview. If you actually are a volunteer for the pharmacy, please email that information. It is hard to know if you are volunteering for the hosp or for the pharmacy. But again in CA most volunteer work is not in the pharmacy. Looking forward to hearing more from others and from you. Guest guest
In Northern California we are now seeing more and more volunteers being used to move meds from the pharmacy to areas of the hospitals. Hospitals here used to employ 'runners' for the pharmacy and train them--that is a job that has been eliminated. Many technician hours have been cut in favor of volunteers. Fortunately laws prohibit using volunteers to fill the Pyxis, emergency carts and med carts--but they still have volunteers delivering floor stock, stat meds, and first doses. And, I am hearing that many pharmacists are claiming there is not a shortage of pharmacists as the news agencies report. Hard to believe we caught up the shortages already! We are seeing a flood of student pharmacists from two new pharmacy schools in our area doing internship hours in our local hospitals. It is making it difficult for us to place technicians in internship positions as part of our hospital training program. I always hear 'pharmacists first!' None of the pharmacist students have IV training--who will make the IVs? All of our hospitals rely on technicians to make the IVs--but still it is difficult to get my hospital students in for the hours of training they need. And when I do I am told to tell the students to not ask to be hired--no one is hiring. Guest guest
Hello I am new here. Can you please tell me how I can get IV Certified!? Are there any classes in the Bay Area (CA) or even Sacramento,Ca. All the IV Therapy Course I see are for LVN's and RNs. Are they the same thing? Are there certification courses specifically for Pharmacy Techs!? Any info is greatly appreciated. Guest guest
Jeanetta   In the hospital I worked at we had volunteers. They put up the order when it came in and they did filing of papers. They did what ever they were asked to do. Some of them were retired pharmacists but not all. I have been gone for 8 years but I know that they still use volunteers, but not to what degree. Guest guest
Volunteers at our hospital do the bare minimum. I have seen them check expiry dates or filing in the pharmacy but nothing of substance and definitely aren't taking work away from any of our employees as we typically run shorthanded anyways. We are grateful when they do come but they are also not consistant. We also have interns (yes, we make our pharmacist students make IV's and compound so that when they become pharmacists they will know what they are checking) and residents. We have had some pharm tech students tour the hospital but they came from too far away to work here. I have heard UF may have a new tech program but we have not seen any of their students so I don't know what they are doing for practical training (if any). Guest guest
There is a new program--San Francisco State University-a well respected institution--they are running a 50 hr pharm tech program for $999.00 that prepares you to pass the national exam--that's it--no other classroom work, no internship--and it is competing with an AS degree program I teach in at City College of SF and a private program at Evergreen College that is a 9 month program. It is cheapening the certificate and license by saying all you need is the PTCB and " poof " you are a pharmacy technician ready to work! Re: Hello Everyone! Guest guest
THANK YOU! Allow me to clarify for non-educators! While some readers may understand the problem with a 50 hour course to prepare to take the exam, others do not.  Do you want YOUR pharm tech filling YOUR drugs at a local pharmacy or making YOUR IV's to know HOW to answer test questions,  OR do YOU WANT your pt filling your scripts and compounding YOUR meds to KNOW HOW because they have HANDS ON practice? Because their technique was observed, assessed by a teacher who knows what is right and wrong? Do you want to be a tech who KNOWS what is an error or potential error or doe you want to become a technician who does notknow what to look for and is part of the error making process? Do you want to killl a patient because you have NEVER had the experience? Never had the foundation of pharmacology? or pharmacy?  but you know how to pick out the a,b, c or d because you have memorized that question and answer from a book? ora sheet of paper a 'teacher' gives you at SF for $999 ????  Give e a BREAK! This is what many of 'us' educators are " witching " about (with a capital " b " ) for YEARS! everyone is looking for the easier softer short cut way! NOT going to happen, you MUST work in the trenches to know how to get out during a flood. You musr work with orders and chemos to prevent deaths like little Jerry and the many in Texas in the last few years. More than that you need the lectures to go along with the lab BEFORE you ever touch a REAL PT''s drug orders.  But then hey what do I know I hve only been teaching for close to 15 yrs!  If you look at old blogs and forums with my posts you will find I have been advocating education + mock labs+ hands on training + certification+ registration for YEARS. I am not the only one. But I am probably the LOUDEST, most DIRECT in the posts. We are now seeing many states discovering 'training' but we will still NOThave a good standard, we will have a min of crap!  We need a lab practical exam also just like hairdressers have.   I would BET my bottom last dollar the class is taught by a Pharmacist who wants to provide a WAY for his or her grads, or 3rd year students to GET INTO the Pharmacy for clinical rotations. The way is having PTCB to then get your registration. so why not gouge the Pharmacist Students who need it? Yep I would love to see who is teaching that course.   I would also bet there is some entrance exam to KEEP OUT the average student who is NOT in pharm school.  Thank you for pointing out this crapola! We have enough instant techs across the country we need EDUCATED techs. Techs who can help prevent med errors by know what, how when who, where why, not just what.  Sorry for spouting off but this as Dora , CPhT says 'just chaps my hide " ! {Goota love Doraisms}.  Love yas!
