Cindi, you're not the only one that this peeves, and I'm not even in Digest Mode anymore! It's particularly a problem when people in Digest Mode do it, and have their email program settings to automatically quote the original text.

When it's just ONE person's post that is being replied to (in Individual Mail Mode), I actually find it helpful to have the previous part of the message included, so I know which discussion is being referred to. However, even in that instance I still try to remove Headers (the To/From/Date/Subject portion) and Footers (any signature lines, the standard part that adds on there, etc), and I'll often also remove a large part of the text to include JUST the few sentences I'm replying to. Not only does this shorten the reply, but it also helps to clarify WHAT I'm replying to... if someone made five different points and I agree with four of the five, I'll just quote the one that I disagree with so that it's clear exactly what I'm talking about when I say "I disagree".

For people who have always been in Individual Mail Mode (meaning you get every single post via email), I think it's simply a matter of not realizing what Digest mode is and how it works. In a nutshell, Digest Mode will "collect" a day's worth of messages, up to 25 at a time, and then send them in one HUGE email, so the person just has one message to read instead of 25 different emails. It's very helpful to people who don't have access to a computer all day long and can't read the posts as they come in, but are instead confronted by an overflowing inbox when they finally sit down to their computer.

So if you're on Digest Mode, PLEASE take the time to either create a new message as Cindi suggests, or else hit "reply" and then DELETE ALL BUT THE RELEVANT MESSAGE from the end of your reply. In either instance, it's easier on everyone else if you also create a new subject line to show what your message is in response to... either the person's name, or the same subject line that was on the original message you're replying to.

And if you're in Individual Mail mode or if you read messages on the web, please take a gander at the end of the message to see if there's a list of up to 25 different emails all in a row. If there is, please DELETE everything that's not needed when you post your reply.

It's not hard to work around this, and there's nothing wrong with including the message that you're replying to -- like I said, I personally think that it HELPS to include the message you're replying to. The problem comes when people in Digest Mode include the ENTIRE Digest, or when LONG discussions get going on one topic and nobody in the line ever deletes the previous emails. To give you an idea how quickly this can progress, I'll give a graphical example:Person A writes:AAAAAAAAAAAA

Person B replies, with Person A's message quoted:BBBBBBBBBBBB>AAA>AAA

>AAA

>AAA

Person C replies to Person C:CCCCCCCCCCCC>BBB>BBB>BBB>BBB>>AAA>>AAA

>>AAA

>>AAA

Then person D replies:

DDD

DDD

DDD

DDD

>CCC>CCC>CCC>CCC>>BBB>>BBB>>BBB>>BBB>>>AAA>>>AAA

>>>AAA

>>>AAA

and it just gets worse and worse and worse with each reply. It's much more concise to just quote the part you're replying to.

And like Cindi said, this is JUST a "gentle reminder" to those who weren't aware of this problem -- I don't think anyone in the group would purposely try to make things difficult for anyone else! I've contacted people offlist about this problem before, and without exception every single one of them didn't even realize that it was happening -- they just saw the part of the email that fit on their computer screen, and didn't realize there was another 35 pages of messages down below! :oDDebbi in Michigan

PS -- if anyone needs help changing their computer settings or settings, feel free to post your question to the group, email me privately, or check out the welcome letter in the "files" section -- go here: achalasia/files/ and click on the file titled "A welcome letter to new members.rtf " -- it also explains how to change your settings from Individual / Digest / etc.

Perhaps I'm the only neurotic person out there with this pet peeve and I apologize in advance if I offend anyone....my intent is not to offend or hurt anyone and I don't even know exactly which folks do this, but....Please, please, rather than hitting "reply" when you have an email digest full of 25 posts....please hit "new message" and type in achalasia . You can put it in your address book. If you are not certain how to do this, please feel free to email me personally and I will help you. Or, when you hit "reply", delete everything on your page before typing your response.I'm certain that people with dial-up connections or those in developing countries may have trouble even downloading a message that has 125 posts on it like today's did. Thanks for listening....Anal Cindi

I've been mulling this over and realized I may not have fully understood what

you are telling us " newbies " . You mean I should cut out the other persons email

and only include my reply with the Subject kept the same? Sorry I'm being a bit

dense, but I realize I need to understand this properly in order not to make a

mess of your system.

Hi

You are not being a bit dense, I too was a " newbie " at one time. Trimming a

post you are replying to, by sometimes everything but the subject line and

other times to the pertinent information you are replying to. I sometimes

have to think with my own posts just what to include. It is really a

courtesy and it helps when folks search the archives.

AND if you hit " reply via web post " it will show up inside of a

preexisting thread (even if you change the Subject line).

just a pet peeve of mine after being on Groups for a couple years now.

Hullo Liora. If you go to your Options up top right there, then General Preferences, and then scroll down to Message Actions, then Replying, you will see the option to check: DON"T INCLUDE ORIGINAL MESSAGE WHEN REPLYING. Hope that helps. Glad Day ~ Karla in IL

no no, it's not a preference for email that I'm talking about.

I'm talking about posting via the web.

Case in point, this " Gentle Reminder " section is subsumed inside a

larger, unrelated thread called " Premature Granddaughter will not be

released " as well as a couple other topics which have been wrongfully

assigned to this thread.

You can easily check this when posting new topics via the web. The

web address should read ....no-forced-vaccination/post

at the end of the addy. That will create a topic thread anew. If it

is already part of a thread it will look something like this

..../no-forced-vaccination/post?act=reply & messageNum=6129

best,

Liora

Pam asked this a few weeks ago and everyone complied for about two days and then forgot. Please remember to cut and paste the part of the email you are replying to, instead of the whole email. When you just hit reply and put the whole previous email in, it is hard for those on digest who have to keep scrolling down or with limited bandwith. Please?

Thanks,
