Guest guest
Colleen, yes, your soap sounds like it gelled. My soap never gel. I like the way they look, feel and honestly, I have never been able to force a soap to gel unless I stick it in a warm oven or make it with milk (never again). As far as hot process vs CP, yes if the soap gets too hot some of the oils could be ruined. At certain temps oils will break down. As far as methods for heating/cooling down etc before adding the lye, that isn't really going to affect the property of your oils. In the end you will still have soap. By heating the soap up saponification will happen a lot faster but since there are excess fats in there, any non salts (the actual soap) can break down if hot enough. Oils like peanut oil, coconut oil etc are a lot more stable at high temps than something like olive oil. It has a lot to do with the fatty acid chain lengths and degree of unsaturation. Guest guest
> Colleen, yes, your soap sounds like it gelled. So because the inside was darker than the outside, does it sound like it gelled completely? I'm just trying to figure out why the outside was light and the inside was darker. Thanks for your input! Guest guest
Jeanine Nice job. I bet everyone will love them. Pics Just posted some pics of the kitties and the duckie soaps I did for Val's shower. These are so much fun to do... Will be off for about two weeks as we are leaving for Florida on Wednesday, early. Have an order to get out tomorrow and a restock at the craft store I'm in. Shaye, hope you feel better as the days go by. Please don't rush...as my dear Mother-in-law used to say......'who will know ten years from now?' Hugs to all. Guest guest
Coleen, It didnt gel completely all the way to the outside is why. I like to gel but I dont cover with plastic. I use beach towels to wrap it in and 9.9 out of 10 I get complete gel and no ash. Shaye Re: Pics > Colleen, yes, your soap sounds like it gelled. Guest guest
> Coleen, It didnt gel completely all the way to the outside is why. How would I get it to gel all the way? Use more towels? Do you cover the soap with anything so it doesn't get on the towel? LOL! So many questions! And you thought I'd fired off all the questions I had when I first made the soap. Hehehe! Guest guest
I have a small like a peice of wood that sits on top of the mold so the towel dosnt get in the soap and helps keep in the heat. The reason for this is that I use to cover it with plastic wap but I was never able to get out all the trapped bubbles and somehow it always ended up very wrinkly. I had to trim it a lot. So now I get a flatter top doing it this way. Less trimming if any at all. What temp did you use for your oils and lye? Guest guest
> I use to cover it with plastic wap but I was never able to get > out all the trapped bubbles and somehow it always ended up very wrinkly. What temp did you use for your oils and lye? I used one of the MW tray molds and just laid a piece of saran over the top. I didn't have air bubbles under it & the soap was pretty flat. Except of course where Colleen got impatient and had to poke at it to see how soft it was!!! I didn't figure out the temps. I made up the lye water and let it cool. I melted the oils and let that cool some too. Then I added the lye water to the oils, brought to trace, added the eo, poured in the mold, covered with saran, wrapped in towels, and left it for at least 24 hours. But like I told you before, I did get ash on the sides and top, but not on the bottom. Not sure what I'll do differently for the next batch. I may try a new recipe too. Who knows! I've got mp to paint today and that's my top priority. I do appreciate all of your insight!!! Guest guest
Hi Colleen! I'll pipe in and say I have a really hard time getting MW molds to gel. I would think a tray mold would be a little easier, but I have a cold house to begin with, so most anything I want to gel I have to put in a warm oven (CPOP) and I just discovered using my electric roaster oven works pretty good for this. I don't think I'd do that with MW molds because I'd be afraid they would melt. I've heard (I'm pretty sure Kae mentioned this) using styrofoam coolers for the MW molds and if you're using more than one you can stack them with a piece of cardboard between them. Wood log molds are great insulators because the wood acts as a natural insulator and the shape keeps the soap in pretty close proximity. I love 's log molds and they have the nice top that keeps everything cozy inside. :-) Oh, and it's nice to know I'm not the only one who's so darned impatient when it comes to soap! LOL ;-) HTH! Guest guest
Thanks for the input ! I've got a wood mold, but it's a loaf mold. I tried the MW mold because it's scored. I can't cut a straight bar of soap no matter how hard I try! Maybe I'll hunt down my wood mold and try it next time. Guest guest
Colleen, With all those tools your hubby has, does he have a mitre box by chance? That makes a good guide for cutting soap. :-) Beers Re: Pics > Thanks for the input ! I've got a wood mold, but it's a loaf > mold. I tried the MW mold because it's scored. Guest guest
I have decided I am going to cut the guides directly into one of my wood molds. I bought a plastic mitre box from Home Depot for about 3 bucks but even with that I have troubles. Even with guides, what you use to make the cuts makes all the difference. I found some wire clay cutters at 's for 75 cents. I need to trim them up since they are so long the only thing I end up cutting with them are my fingers! A 12 " mud knife works best so far. Guest guest
OOH-so glad to hear there are other people impatient with the soap too. So much of my soaps have a fingerprint in the middle of them LOL. Like Colleen, I can't cut a straight bar of soap if my life depended on it. I also can't swirl for the life of me. I would love to learn how to swirl and how to cut the soap straight!!!
