This is why I am so excited about all the new TX options being researched, some that dont include the I/R TX. But having said that, liver disease is a very touchy subject, no matter what treatments they come up with. There is very likely going to be health sides with any new drug protocal. My heart doc refuses to let me do the I/R TX, because the Interferon may kill my heart. So I am hoping that if I eat right, and take care of myself, perhaps my liver can last long enough to try some future treatment. Right now my labs are staying nearly normal except for my viral load. Hopefully this is a sign that I can last until less deadly meds hit the street. love don in ks Thanks Don, I have been batteling thyroid problems since treatment I appreciate the site. Guest guest
Hi Beth We have to keep in mind that the I/R TX is helping many many people fight off the dragon, who might otherwise gone downhill. Im not totally down on it, but I sure wish some cure would come along that doesnt creat so many other health issues. Perhaps one day. HCV treatment and viral research is still very young, and new. Im sure the scientists are working their butts off looking for answers. love don in ks Thanks Don, I have been batteling thyroid problems since treatment I appreciate the site. Guest guest
Okay, I didn't delete Don's post on purpose.... Here is why.Riba/Interfuron... My very own liver specialist, the one that saved my life, referred to it as poison. He told me he was going to poison me to just the brink of death and keep me there for 48 weeks. He also told me that I was going to hate him before it was over. I hated the treatment but I never hated him. He was clear. He said it was a form of chemotherapy but more on the poison side and more intense than any chemo any cancer patient goes thru. It worked for me... he was also very aggressive. I was on more than double the recommended amount of Ribavirin and the highest dosage of that silly Peg-Interfuron pen. He said he was pushing the limits but it was the only chance of saving me. My treatment was 48 weeks of sheer and utter hell. I was in my bed for 48 weeks. Halfway thru treatment I started having one good day.. the day before my next shot. That window expanded a little bit... My shots were on Friday afternoons and near the end I was good from Wednesday night to Friday when I took my shot. I am positive that had he given me the regular dosage of the meds I wouldn't have cleared. But yeah, poison is what it is. I called him the Poison Doctor and I still do. Guest guest
DonThere is not very much in the line of any medications that are not harmful to anyone's body. Chemotherapy for ANY cancer could be deadly and Interferon is mainly just a low dose chemo. It's used in other health issues as well. So, it is not just heppers that are trading off! Men with prostate cancer, women with breast cancer or deadly illness will have to make those choices. It's one of the reasons that I try so hard not to have to look at prescription painkillers for the Fibro. Not only can they be damaging to my liver; but, to a lot of other things as well. Never mind the fact that if I get to have a long life, a prescription too soon will become less effective as time goes on.Beth, I'm sorry that your thyroid problem continued after treatment! Mine went "hyper" during my first treatment and settle right down when it was over. Then, it didn't even waiver during the second treatment.Gloria Hi Beth Thyroid disorders, diabetes2, and some other conditions seem to be VERY related to HCV, and HCV TX. Guest guest
Personally, I don't feel I can possibly complain about the effects of TX at all!!! I chose to do it even before I was fully informed; but, it was either that or constantly wonder how much longer my liver would hold up. After the 1st treatment didn't work, I did spend the next 3-1/2 yrs doing just that - worrying. As everyone is aware, my 2nd treatment was one great big emotional roller coaster that I wouldn't care to repeat. However, I'm just soooo grateful that so far, I'm coming up negative. That way, it's definitely one more thing that is off my mind and out of my life. Also, I'm going to give the cancer a boot out of my mind as well!!! As soon as I get the results of the CAT Scan I'm booked for on the 26th. I know that's there is a great possibility that new tumours will appear someday; but, we ALL live with something and all the worry in the world is not going to do any good.Gloria Hi Beth We have to keep in mind that the I/R TX is helping many many people fight off the dragon, who might otherwise gone downhill. Guest guest
Gloria,Treatment was pure unadulterated hell for me but it worked. So it's in the past and it's over with. I would do it again in a heartbeat if I had to, even knowing how hard it was and what I went thru. I'm not ready to push up daisies for anybody yet and I'll do whatever it takes to stay alive. Because the treatment worked, I tend to look at the positive side of it, yes it was hard but it was okay. If I had to do it again, I wouldn't whine about it because I'd already know what to expect. I'd venture to say you are still SVR... and I like your attitude about putting cancer out of your head. I think if we dwell on this stuff we can bring it about. Live every day as if it was your last... I'm not going out gracefully, I'll be sliding in full of dirt and yelling "Damn that was awesome!"Teri From: Gloria <gadamscan@...> Sent: Sat, May 15, 2010 9:40:44 PMSubject: Re: [ ] Thyroid Disorders and Hepatitis C - Beth Personally, I don't feel I can possibly complain about the effects of TX at all!!! Guest guest
Mine went hyper on tx but about 3 mths after went realllyyyyy hypo. Yes I agree chemo is chemo just differnt kinds. and it not only kills the bad cells it kills lots of other things as well (if you every had your blood counts drop your know what I am talking about). I have a uncle that is batteling stage 2 colon cancer right now and I worry about him and the chemo. I went into tx with a win win attuide and knew I would be lucky - not sick = would breeze through tx and come out on the winning side. But the doc pulled me off tx everything bottomed out to quickly he said. Guest guest
TeriThe biggest lesson for me, was the fact that I experienced treatment different both times!! Goes to show why we can never tell another person what their experience will be. Definitely, I don't want any person on this site or elsewhere to get the idea that it can go as far as it did for me either. Sure there are the warnings about HepC and cancer and I trust that more of the public realize just how dangerous it is, not getting tested. But, I believe that the % of us that will go on to cancer is only 20%...Damn, I gotta borrow that line about not going out gracefully!! Oh how much I so totally agree with you.... He.. I came into this world making lots of noise and just about killed my mother - so I guess it's the only way that I can leave anyway.Gloria Gloria,Treatment was pure unadulterated hell for me but it worked. Guest guest
Oh BethI am so sorry to hear that about your other readings getting the kick too. In that way, I was super lucky and especially the 1st time around, the team could not believe how normal my readings stayed. So, it was an absolute shock to everyone when I came back NR after that 48 weeks. I had been one, that had an absolutely positive attitude that I would be just fine after treatment and never gave a second thought to any other thinking. But, I can tell you, the shock at the end was devastating!! That's when I started my research online and looking for support groups. There just wasn't much to look forward to, until we started to hear about the Protease Inhibitors. It's still a lousy cut of the cards for those of us that can not tolerate treatment, period! I have a dear friend that couldn't cut it both times he tried. Now he's had a liver surgery and they would have to be super vigilante because of the amount of cirrhosis he has.Gloria Mine went hyper on tx but about 3 mths after went realllyyyyy hypo.
