Hi

I know that the news story I gave you about the lady in Taiwan was lacking in details.

It was only a sample to make my point about possible dire effects from overuse.

- In the MedicalNewsToday article it talks about who is right or who is wrong - ing/NIH.

- In the HealthInnovations article, Coors-Frontier were supposed to do a study about the effects of high dose IV vs HCV.

I went into ClinicalTrials dot gov, and could find no such trial.

http://www.clinicaltrials.gov/ct2/results?term=intravenous+vitamin+c+in+the+treatment+of+hepatitis+c

[i am crosseyed and brain fogged today. LOL] :-)

- In the HealingDaily article, exerp - ing claims to have been taking 10 grams [10,000 MG] p day, and but did not specify for how long. 1 day, 2 days???

[He-ing?] stated increased health with 2 grams [2000 MG] p day, and more benefits with up to 6 grams p day.

You are taking 20 grams [20,000 MG] p day....for how long now?

Even IV vitamin C treatment under supervision is only for a short time, and only goes up to 3-8 grams [3-8000 MG] p day.

This is what concerns me.

Too much of something can also be detrimental.

That said, I am only an old hippy/musician, not a Nutripath, or any other medical professional.

I am pretty good at finding info, but there is also a lot of territory to cover even with the search engines.

My old Dad [90] has been studying nutrition for 35 years now.

He reads everything about everything.

When my Mom had breast cancer [stage 4], he used his knowledge and research to help with her cure.

She still had to undergo massive surgury and chemo.

I concider him to be 'very' educated in suppliments and diet.

I phoned him about your case [no names].

He responded like this.....'OMG'.

He told me that 1 gram daily [1000 MG] of vitamin C is plenty long term.

Higher doses possible, but only for short term use.

Granted he could be wrong.

, I am only sharing info with you, [and learning from you].

I am not telling you what to do, nor would I.

Tread lightly please, my friend.

Your body may not always tell you something is wrong in time.

I know. I scarf chocolate cake and it makes me happy......until the next day. :-)

love

Don,

Thanks for your reply and your concern.

You mentioned you take Walmart’s mens one a day multi? Check the ingredients, and you will see propylene glycol. That may be part of the cause of your not feeling so well. Have a look into the side effects of that, including liver abnormalities, kidney damage, digestive problems, heart problems, etc. It makes my legs go numb and a horrid stomach ache if I take it.

Perhaps it is that we are coming from two different perspectives (traditional medicine and alternative) that we have such different views of things. Our discussion is exactly the same one that science has been debating for a long time about doses needed. If the supplements you are taking are getting you the results you need, then keep doing it. One multi every other day does not work for me.

Megadoses of vitamins in some situations and disorders is necessary according to nutritional medicine. The RDA is waaaay to low for even healthy people, then there is quality of the vitamin and additives, and the ability to absorb and assimilate the vitamins. There are certain conditions that impair the body’s use of vitamins/minerals to the extent that high doses become necessary. In a normal healthy person they are generally not needed, as you say. Other people can’t function without a dose that would be toxic to someone else. It is very individualized, which is why things like the RDA don’t work.

While many mainstream docs agree with what you said of 1000mg Vitamin C maximum, there are a lot of studies since the 60’s on vitamin C taken to bowel tolerance. The research studies just don’t support that theory endorsed by the NIH that low dose is best. The amount needed by any person is individual, and also varies according to the persons health at any given time. Linus ing, considered the ‘father of vitamin c’ has the original research http://www.medicalnewstoday.com/articles/12154.php

http://www.healingdaily.com/detoxification-diet/vitamin-c.htm for information about excretion of excess C.

Vitamin C is currently use in IV form for treating cardiovascular disease, cancer, and is now being formally studied for Hep C, (http://www.healthinnov.org/current-studies.php).

I question the media’s portrayal of deaths attributed to supplements. The link to the article gives no data on the woman’s age, health or lifestyle issues, drugs taken, possible contamination of herbs, and no names of herbs given other than lecithin. The article itself says the cause of liver failure is unknown and “assumed†to be from supplements.

But having said all that, I have experienced very bad side effects of one vitamin so I know they can be dangerous. All I can say is what you are saying, research and know what you are getting into. And when people like me mess up and end up being studied in a world class teaching hospital, more research articles come out with new info that you can use J lol But if that one doc was not too caught up in his ego to notice how sick I was getting it never would have happened.

My doc did also say that it is because of all these supplements that I am functioning as well as I am.
