Steve,

I'll take all the two cents I can get, LOL!!! I'm pretty stubborn and when it comes to my health I want all the facts. Let u know how it goes, I'm taking a huge note pad and a long list of questions to be answered. May be there a while.

Jane,Just my two cents...Don' t take 'no' for an answer! Sounds like you've got that under control, and maybe your doctor too!Glad you at least have some face time with the dr, if he sticks to his guns ask him for a referral for a second opinion...SteveLife is much more fun when thought of as a scavenger hunt as opposed to a surprise party. Hi Teri, I agree with what you are saying and the pain is so horrible, nothing like I have ever experienced in my life. I went three rounds on the phone with my doctor today and he insist that with liver damage that it would be a death sentence to remove my spleen. What I don't understand is they have not done a liver biopsy to even determine any degree of live damage. When I first went to the dr all of my complaints have been on my left side and CT and ultrasound showed enlarged spleen, follow up test to find out what was causing enlarged spleen was when I found out about HepC. My liver function test have always been normal and viral load was very low ( this is all very confusing ). For over 18 months now my labs have been abnormal low RBC's, low WBC's and low platelets and on first CT spleen was 16.5cm and now 21cm and increased horrible pain. I'm not a doctor but this certainly doesn't seem to be getting any better. Anyway after my telephone

consult with my doctor today and calling him an idiot I have an appointment at 11am tomorrow to see him.

Maybe I get some answers tomorrow, I sure hope so!!!!

Hi Jane

This is my opinion only.

- I dont agree that the spleen is useless, therefore cut it out.

The spleen is far from useless.

I posted links for you to look at, and read.

Did you?

- I dont agree with your doctor, that removing the spleen is a 'death sentance', unless there is more going on with your health than you are saying, or being told by your doctor.

So far I am none to pleased with your doctor from what you have said about your care.

I would suggest that you get a second opinion from another doctor - NOT RELATED TO HIM.

[1] You should not be sitting there with an enlarged spleen because there are treatments.

[2] You should not be sitting there in pain at all - that is not right.

[3] The spleen can burst and bleed out, and then you are in serious trouble.

In my opinion, you need immediate attention.

I would suggest the ER, and see what they have to say.

Now, I am not a medical professional in any way, but right is right, and wrong is wrong.

It does not sound to me like you are getting proper care from this doctor.

Everything you have told us is troubling to me.

- Enlarged spleen, no meds, in pain, days sitting there in discomfort with no care, la la la from your doctor.

Tomarrow at your appmt, ask your doctor exactly what is going on.

Dont allow him to blow off any questions without answers that you can easily understand.

If he gives you an exam, and NO treatment, please go immediately to another doctor, or the ER.

Your health is not a joke.

Jane, I am chiming in cause Steve just told me too! LOL! Just kidding. The major function of your spleen is to hold an extra pint of blood in case you are bleeding out somewhere. It is a very very sensitive organ that you really don't need. Almost anyone who has ever had a serious motorcycle accident has lost theirs in surgery right after the accident. It usually ruptures with major contact. Sounds like yours needs to come out. One of my professors in medical lab school called motorcycles murder cycles. He explained the entire concept of the spleen and what it does and the high number of people who have had motorcycle accidents that bleed out before they can get help because the spleen just ruptures. It sounds like your spleen is causing more harm than doing any

good and it's time for it to come out. Just my opinion...Hugs,Teri

Hello everyone, I've been away for awhile and glad to be back... Was suppose to start TX but have had to put on hold for now, everything else has gone south ( if you know what I mean ). I have had an enlarged spleen which up until a couple weeks ago hasn't caused much problems except some pain. Now it measures at 21cm and on CT is totally crushing the left kidney and the muscle that is between the spine and kidney, pushing on the spine. They say my left kidney is actually being pushed so far down that it is actually in my pelvic area. In the past my GI has said under no circumstances should I have the spleen removed but now they are saying I may not have a choice and I may also loose that kidney.

Does anyone know or heard that radiation therapy has been used to shrink the spleen? I have read a little on it but there really not a lot of information out there.

Hi Don,

I did read the articles you sent me and that is why I called my doctor and ask about all my options. Something has to be better than nothing. I do get the feeling that there is more going on than I am being told and that is driving me nuts. I'm going for answers tomorrow so hopefully I will get answers.

Thanks

Jane,I have a better answer for you... do the same thing that I did.. FIND A NEW DOCTOR! First off you need a biopsy on your liver, period. You need to know how much damage is there. Secondly, there is a person on here... STEVE WHERE ARE YOU.. who has had his spleen removed and gone thru tx. Your spleen is a fairly useless organ. Many people live without them... specially those people who ride those murder cycles! Truly, if you are not getting answers you need or the quality of medical attention you deserve, find a new doctor. My recent discovery is that the new docs, fresh out of med school are the best on the block.. they have all the new stuff in

their heads and know stuff that the more established docs haven't even bothered to learn about.. Besides that, they can be eye candy too if you find the right one... I found a great eye candy doctor... I almost want to find a reason to go see him cause he's so darn cute!Trust your instincts and all will be well... I promise.Hugs,Teri From: Jane <janes6749@...> Sent: Thu, June 3, 2010 8:39:56 PMSubject: Re: [ ] Jane - Spleen

Don,Maybe I worded that wrong.. I didn't mean useless because it does have a function.. It's function is to hold blood.. but apparently Jane's is holding too much. What I meant is that it's an organ that you can live a healthy life without, kinda like your appendix. Hi everyone, my doctor visit went much better today, first of all he apologized and admitted that he and his office really dropped the ball on my care. During exam he agreed that my spleen has increased in size since last visit and was the root of my discomfort and pain. He did explain why he was against removing my spleen. His reason was that with all my liver functions, previous ultrasound and CT he thinks my liver damage is at a middle to late stage 2 and he explained that as long as my spleen is there and operating some that it is taking strain off my liver and helping to slow progression until I have treatment. I finally left there with a plan, we are repeating the ultrasound, CT and labs, EGD is scheduled for varicies banding for the 18th and I'm going to try the radiation injection

into the spleen to try and shrink and keep it pumping as long as I can. He did tell me that that procedure was going to be like taking a trip to hell, I told him I had been on a two week trip there already I would just prolong my visit and pray I come home with good results. We also ordered the HepC treatment to start as soon as possible. This is all scary but not doing anything was even more scary.
