New HCV Fashion: Whats in and Whats out?

New Drugs

" Whats in and Whats out"

..

I'm here to say I love fashion and wait with anticipation for the new year to divulge "whats in and whats out". I just love the whole "The devil wears Prada", maybe I don't wear Prada but I did rent the DVD. Bottom line is I shop at Old Navy and the closest thing I have to any fashion sense is attempting to walk like Meg .

k.

Anyhoo, I can find a correlation here, because "whats in and whats out" with treatment is very much like fashion. The world of HCV drugs are evolving and will continue to do so, we hope.

..

Let me give you an example, the other day I was reading this older study about genotype 1 and treatment duration. The study elaborated on response guided therapy and how rapid or early reduction in viral load is seen as an important predictor of treatment success. We all know that, right ? Treatment in the last few years has become individualized, which is what the best of the best in the medical world toted back in 2000. Or shall we say , the best "designers" of treatment response, reasoned years ago. A good food for thought here is to think of your physician as a "designer". Make sure he or she specializes in treating HCV especially with the new oral therapies.

..

Fast forward to now, and the recipe for treatment success, according to your local designer is as follows:

..

"A negative viral load test after four weeks of therapy is predictive of sustained virologic response. In contrast, failure to achieve a 100-fold reduction in viral load by week 12 of therapy has a strong negative predictive value for sustained virologic response and suggests that treatment is likely ineffective and should be stopped."

l

Not a lot has changed when it comes to predicting SVR, as they say in fashion "whats old is new again".

,

What has changed are the NEW drugs to treat HCV !

..,.,

One of the new drugs ready to enter the HCV fashion world is Telaprevir, the assumption is that it will be FDA approved at the end of 2010. With Telaprevir "response guided therapy" will continue to play an important roll in predicting treatment success and treatment duration.
