I could be wrong but I have heard from our herbalist that milk thistle is

contra-indicated in persons who have seizures. Why not take Vit E instead?

Dear Sandy, My sister divorced her husband, he was an alcoholic and then got

into Heroin, he had done other drugs etc. After my sister dumped him he lived

with his mother and was having tests to see what was left of his brain. Well,

he took milk thistle and vitamins etc. Lo and behold he got off the drugs

cleaned up his body, met and married another women, fathered a child, his

life is going well and my sister is as shocked as she can be.

And to think how many people just consider this a WEED! And, don't forget

the dandelions and burdock.

Helen,

What does contra-indicated mean, it doesn't sound good. I haven't

heard of any adverse effects for milk thistle, in fact all I've heard

is positive, but I will do more research. I'm also curious what

vitamin E will do for the liver. We actually take vitamin E already.

Thanks,

Sandy

Contra-indicated means that if you shouldn't take one

if you have the other In this case, it would mean you

shouldn't take milk thistle if you have a seizure

disorder. I've not heard this and can tell you that

we did a whole course of milk thistle and never had a

problem with it causing seizures. I can also tell

you, though, that it didn't touch 's liver enzymes

-- in fact, they more than doubled.

On Vitamin E -- somebody on the Williss list posted

that they saw liver enzymes increase with Vitamin E.

This was a surprise to me. . .and the first I'd heard

it. Don't know if it's true or not.--D

I see DeEtte already responded to most of your question. I also have not

been able to find any literature on the negatives of milk thistle - I intend

to ask the herbalist why she is of the view that I shouldn't take it.

Vitamin E apparently works wonders as a liver detoxifier - if I recall it

was on this list that I got articles to that effect - anyone remember who

posted the articles or links?

Hi a:

Cliff was taken milk thistle, in the beginning.. He hasn't for a long time.

The Dr. said he didn't need it-- as he was too far along. It can't hurt you.

I know they are expensive... so, the Dr. told me to take them.., good for you, and is good for our complexion. Cliff didn't take them, for another reason,

His blood was too thin... and milk thistle can thin the blood.

I have been taking the milk thistle.

Ask you Doctor is you can take the milk thistle.

Take care

My liver specialist told me I could take it. He said it probably wouldn't work, but it probably wouldn't hurt. I never did start taking it.

I have been taking Milk Thisle for at least 3 years, with my doctor's knowledge and I guess approval because we have discussed it many times. He never said it could have any harmful effect, so I keep taking it. Maybe it is helping since, I am not taking anything else but the questionable Ursodiol, which my docor is not sure is doing much, but it is the only thing he can recommend for NAFLD, and hope a lot.

My lab numbers are normal but my liver is enlarged ( he tells me every time he pockes around and I remind him he told me last time, but is it bigger, the ans is normally no) And my spleen is enlarged but he is more concerned with my "protal hypertention". I hope he gets concerned with the serious pain I had last week!

Milk Thisle is supposed to protect the liver. I sure hope it is doing it job!

Hi Everybody!

This is probably a naive question from a newcomer (dx 1/14/05 AIH/PBC), but does anyone have thoughts on milk thistle? Does anyone take it in conjunction with urso and prednisone? I'm not sure that herbal remedies work, but, for example, I used to drink 4-5 cups a day of capucciono and expresso. I stopped the coffee and began drinking camomile tea--the tea doesn't "cure" anything, but it certainly is a lot better than coffee. My stomach pains and headaches stopped, and my spirits improved. Could milk thistle have at least a "comfort effect" for the liver? Interested in anyone's thoughts on this...

does anyone have thoughts on milk thistle?

Hi Kathy

I am a firm believer in the power of herbs. I have a holistic veterinarian who

takes care of my pets, often with herbs. In fact, he saved one of my dog's life

using nothing but herbs. However I also have a great respect for the damage they

can do when used improperly. They should be regarded the same as any drug. Make

sure you get the ok from your hepatologist, and seek guidance from someone who

is knowledgeable in their proper use.

+++Hi. . Not everything from China is a problem and since it is

organic don't be concerned. You can encapsulate it if you wish, or

make a tea with it. I don't know how many capsules you take; maybe

the internet has that information.

Does this mean that it helps the liver to dump its toxins, i.e. into

the bloodstream on the way out?  Because this would mean a sudden

increase in symptoms, which I would like to avoid.

considering it.  What do those of you who have taken milk thistle

think?  I'd appreciate any thoughts.

Hi andra. Here's information on what Milk Thistle does:

http://www.wellnow.ca/home.asp?PageID=589 & sMenuID=584

You can regulate how much the milk thistle detoxifies your liver by

starting with small amounts, and only gradually increasing them.

But the most important thing for the liver is the " good " fats I

recommend, along with their co-factor supplements (omega 3, vitamins

A, D & E), as well as the diet of course - everything in this program

works together. No nutrients work in isolation.

Also I recommend coffee enemas for the liver. When I did them I

didn't find I got more die-off symptoms; they gave me such a sense of

relief and a feeling of rejuvenation.

The best to you, Bee

hi bee

re the coffee enemas - is there an enema kit you can recommend that has

a very thin insert tube. i can't do colonics as the tube is too thick

and due to anal fissures it's extremely painful.

thanks

Hi . The tip on this enema bulb isn't look very big:

http://www.enemasupply.com/faulrecsyr8o.html

Here's an assortment of enema nozzles with one that looks fairly small:

Order it through my website - see the Enema Supply Ad at the bottom of

every page.

Thanks Bee for the link and for the advice. I think I may give it a go.

Like another recent poster, I find myself very queasy about the idea of an

enema.  Once I work myself up to it, though, I will give it a try!

I am slowly adding in my supplements (cash trickle issues) and recently added

Cod Liver Oil for my A,D,E... I'm not sure if it's related to the vitamins or

because the oil is fatty, or if it had nothing to do with adding it in - but my

digestive system has been doing lots of 'flushing' lately!!

I'm all for the bad stuff out!

Thanks again,

andra

That's wonderful andra!! Cod Liver Oil contains Omega 3 (2 kinds

which are EPA and DHA) and Vitamins A and D. It doesn't contain

vitamin E, except when they use a small amount as a preservative.
