Guest guest Posted March 28, 2006 Report Share Posted March 28, 2006 shirley, i was on 450 mg of lyrica and felt stoned all the time and it wasn't really working. before that i was on 900 mg of neurontin and miserable and it wasn't working. my pain doctor (physiatrist) reduced the lyrica dose to 100 mg in the morning, 100 mg midday and 150 mg at nite. i then asked her if i could combine the lyrica with the neurontin. she said it might be a good idea bec. they are two different medications and work differently. yesterday was my first good day. i had a great day yesterday. the nerve pain was tolerable and i was able to work and to walk home (almost 2 miles). i am now at 350 mg lyrica and i just got up to 700 mg neurontin last nite. i want to try to bring the neurontin up to 900 mg. sometimes doctors say no. they are not in pain. you are in pain. are you seeing a physiatrist? that has been tremendous for me. good luck, and as carlene says, may the angels be with you. I am taking neurontin but haven't gotten the results I am hoping for, if I take enough to make the nerver pain go away, then I have severe chest pains, but when I take the lower dose to accomodate the chest pain, then I have pain in my hands and arms. Does the combo work well? My surgeon did not want to talk about Lyrica, maybe because my insurance won't pay. They are both from the same drug class, which is why I questioned Marsha's use of both. I take Lyrica *instead* of Neurontin, which I did take previously (May of 2005 to October or 2005.) The amount of pain meds you mention would probably kill me, but I am willing to try. I am going to my doc soon to talk with him about it all, maybe a shrink would help me, you may be right! I will check it all out. Am supposed to get a TENS Unit, but haven't heard from them yet, meanwhile here I sit with my hands on fire and my patience getting short. Guest guest Posted March 28, 2006 Report Share Posted March 28, 2006 karen, i was taking neurontin about 900 mg and the nerve pain was bad and a lot of side affects. i had taken neurontin two years ago this coming summer and it had worked like a charm on the nerve pain and then i was able to stop taking the neurontin. so when the pain started intensely this time i went back on the neurontin but it wasn't working so i switched to the lyrica which i learned about on this website, but i was feeling stoned from the lyrica and my pain doctor told me to come down on the dosage. i am now at 350 mg a day. my pain doctor said i could combine the lyrica and neurontin. i have been doing this and it has been working pretty well so far. i had a really good day yesterday. today was not as good but still way better than last week. marsha In a message dated 3/28/2006 9:37:22 AM Eastern Standard Time, karens@... writes: Marsha, are you taking Lyrica *and* Neurontin? Guest guest Posted March 28, 2006 Report Share Posted March 28, 2006 Marsha My doc is a neurosurgeon, and I did PT but besides it being expensive, I felt it was not doing anything for me, taking up a major part of my day driving to PT, waiting, doing it for 45 min and then driving back to work, and it was about a 3 hour ordeal with all that driving, not to mention the high copays, and lost time from work. Just was not the thing I could manage. And the meds are the thing I want to get off of especially since I can't take them and drive, so I am in quite a quandry, have to work, drive there, can't take meds till I get there, then hope they wear off before I drive home. So the doc suggested the TENS unit while I am working. I have never been one to take meds, and this is all coming at me so quickly, I just am getting fed up with the pain, the expense, the aggravation of it all ya know. I've never heard of Lyrica and Neurontin, but if it's good, don't knock it. I may even ask my doctor about that when I see him next. The Lyrica alone is not working well at all for me. In fact, earlier tonight my pain was so bad that I took one of my leftover-from-surgery Oxycontins, and I'm doing better pain-wise now. I just have to find out why I'm hurting so much. Ice would send me into an oblivion of pain. Guest guest Posted March 29, 2006 Report Share Posted March 29, 2006 Marsha I live in Peoria, Arizona and it is a growing town about twenty miles from Phoenix. I work in downtown Phoenix, so I leave for work at 6am and the traffic makes it an hour or more drive, so then I take time to go to PT, another drive, then back to work then the hour or more drive home, so you can see why it isn't worth the affects of the PT so by the time the day is done, the good the PT did is undone from all the driving in the craziest city in the US.
