Shana:

A lot of docs are not comfortable prescribing meds at a therapeutic

level for children with OCD. Children metabolize drugs much faster

than adults, and the dose is not weight-based for SSRIs like it is for

antibiotics and fever reducers. In addition, SSRIs must be

prescribed at higher doses for OCD than are effective for

depression. It does sound like your doc is not familiar with treating

children with OCD. I would call your insurance company and get a list

of the pdocs that are in network. Then I would call them to find out

who specializes in children's mental health. In the days before

Risperdal when my then 9 yo son was skinny, he took 60 mg of Prozac to

keep his symptoms manageable.

Please remember that you can always access Dr. Geller

through this list to answer med related questions.

Another resource is the OC Foundation web site. They

have available information about meds for children who

have OCD and they also have an Ask the Experts panel

that is extremely helpful in cases such as yours.

Some of the top OCD Docs in the country respond to

your questions, usually within days of posting. I

have used that resource to educate some of my childs

Doctors who are not as experienced with treating this

disorder in the very young. Hope this helps,

I have been on neurontin for about a week now, and I am so sleepy I can't stand

it! Will this side effect go away?

It also is not helping with the pain yet.

What dose are you on? The effects may ease a bit with time. Don't drive during

this time. Janice

Kate  I think you  misunderstood I been on it  for  3 years.  I did

have  side affext  to  start  with but  that  was  3 years  ago.  I

was  repling  to  someone  who  was having  side affect  to  encoruage

them  to  stick  with it.  That;s  really  not  that  much  you  can

go  up  to  3600mg which  pain  doctor  tolld me.  and  very  happy

with  what  the  med  has  done  for me .  I have  a  very bad

chronic pain in several area  of  my  body  due  a mult-injury while in

the  line of  due.  Who ever  starting  the med  stick  with it  it

dose  work. Steve

Re: med help

How many times a day are you taking it and at what dosage? When my pain

mgmt dr prescribed it, he told me to take 1 300mg capsule at bedtime for

3-5 days, then 1 capsule twice a day for 3-5 days and then increase it

to 1 capsule 3x a day. I took a bit longer to adjust so I went 1

capsule for a week, then added a second capsule. I never got to the

point where I could handle three capsules a day so I stuck with twice a

day which worked for me while I was on it.

Sadly I NEVER got use to the medication. I was unable to take it and work. It

does make it dangerous to drive and I would be walking down halls and work

bouncing off the walls because I couldn't even walk straight. Some people have

had success with it, I just wasn't one of them.

Good luck.
