Guest guest
This is day since my husband's surgery. He's only taking pain med at nite to sleep. Hasn't really needed to take it during the day for discomfort. Today he notice level 5-6 pain in the replacement area and had to resume the daytime med. Is this unusual. Should he go from pretty comfy to level 5 pain. He's been extremely careful not to violate restrictions. Is it too early to get off med in the day. What could be going on? We don't have the p.t. again until Monday. Clue me in please. Cheryl, I still take a Tylenol in the AM and tonight I took one again. I am over two months post op. I am not experiencing a lot of pain though. It is probably a 1 or 2 at this point. But for the first 8 weeks, I would say that there were some days that I experienced 5-6 pain. That worried me too. I wondered if I was doing too much or too little. I noticed that when I did those exercises that it alleviated the pain sometimes. Then once in my recovery, I had a bad day and I realized that I had done too much. So in answer to your question, for me it was just a part of the recovery. I asked my dr. last week about pain and he said it was normal. It never hurts to ask your dr. This is just my experience. Guest guest
Cheryl I'm at about the two month period. I'm not going to repeat Vera's comments--merely state that my experiences seem to be like hers. Some days I feel that everything is great, and the next day I have some pain. In general, each week seems better. I seldom take any anti-pain medicines even if I have a little pain when I go to bed. My major concern is that I still have pain in my knee. When I walk without means of support my knee bothers me more than my hip. C'est comme ça. Staninfr > > > > This is day since my husband's surgery. He's only taking pain med at nite to > > sleep. Is this unusual ______ Not necessarily anything to worry about, but a call to the MD's office might be in order for reassurance. I wasn't taking pain meds during the day after my surgery either (couldn't, as they made me dizzy), but there were times that there was pain and times when there wasn't, and I couldn't particularly relate it to doing too much or too little, swelling, or anything else. y
Guest guest
Cheryl I agree with Vera and Stan. Also noticed that the more I did nothing, the stiffer and sorer I got. But then if I did too much, I felt that too! You can not win, but it gets better each day. Also had more pain when I was anxious about having more pain. Take a deep breath and relax. Do your exercises slowly and breath with each movement. Or count out loud. I tended to hold my breath and became more tense. I am 7 weeks post op RTHR revision and feeling rather normal. Started out patient PT and my muscles are screeming. But I know in the long run you have to do your PT forever! If the pain does not ease or gets worse call the doc. Or if it will give you peace of mind, call anyhow. Sue > > > > > > This is day since my husband's surgery. He's only taking pain med > at nite to > > > sleep. Guest guest
Yes I know what you mean, it is almost like the old pain is back. It is some thing that comes and goes. I had TRH done Sept. 12 and still walking with a can and walker. I have found that putting a heating pad on this when setting in your big easy chair really helps, and the pain goes away. But yes it does travel from you hip down your leg. Take care and have a good day. Jean
Guest guest
Should this be checked out? I haven't had the pain this bad before. I'm thinking that if it's still the same tomorrow, I will go for an x-ray. M Hunt <redrose490@...> wrote: Yes I know what you mean, it is almost like the old pain is back. Guest guest
My wife underwent spinal fusion surgery in early July and then a second surgery two weeks later to repair the fractured vertebrae caused by one of the screws, resulting in a rod being installed. The question I have regards pain. Before the first surgery, all of her pain was in the left leg,to the point that she no longer slept. After the surgery, that leg was good as new. However, she now--6 weeks after the surgery--has nothing but numbness or pins and needles in her formerly good right leg. So far, the only improvement has been that feeling in her right foot has come back.Anything about regaining feeling and use? The doctor says he is puzzled. Has anybody else experienced something similar--one leg for the other? Any advice? Thanks, Charley
Guest guest
Charley, Just 3 weeks ago, I had fusion surgery where rods and screws were used to help hold together. So far, all is well, minus the post-surgery pain which results from the recovery. Hearing this story of your wife having a rod causing more problems, literally scares the crap out of me. I sure hope this does not happen to me. Anyhow, prior to surgery, I had pains in both legs. Originally, all my pain was on the left side of lower back and down leg. Most recently, the pains mostly seemed to switch to the right side. As my diagnosis involves problems with impingment and all the like on both sides, I'm sure this is the reason for my pain shifting. Throughout the years, I always would complain about episodic, shooting pains that shifted from leg to leg, but was always told this is impossible. We all know our bodies and what is occurring, the doctors just need to realize that this can occur. In regards to your wife's condition, I cannot explain, but think that she too may have previously had problems with her right side that was mostly unnoticed because of the extreme amount of pain being felt and complained about coming from the left side. My doctors always seemed to only focus on the side where the most pain was felt. If anything like what your wife is experiencing begins to happen to me, I will let you know. For now, everything with the surgery is too fresh and too new for me to adequately explain if I am doing better, worse, or not experiencing any change. dave ________________________________ From: lame14020 <caboyd@...> spinal problems Sent: Wednesday, September 2, 2009 10:01:12 AM Subject: new pain My wife underwent spinal fusion surgery in early July and then a second surgery two weeks later to repair the fractured vertebrae caused by one of the screws, resulting in a rod being installed. Guest guest
Charley - I am by no means a doctor, and I have only had cervical fusion done, but I had pins and needles and pain down my left arm prior to surgery and immediately after the surgery and for about 8 months I had numbness, and pins and needles in my RIGHT hand which was new after the surgery. My surgeon said " nerves do not react well to being disturb...some only need to be looked at to react during surgery " he aslo said nerves heal slowly so give it time, which I did and it has completely resolved at this point 16 months later. So maybe that is what is going on with your wife's leg? I don't know but I can tell you that is what happened with my situation. Prayers for pain free days and relief to all. Guest guest
Charley, Your wife's condition is not all that uncommon, with the nerve pain on the other leg. It is likely just from the irritation that occured with two surgeries. they take a hard toll on the body and lumbar fusions in particular are very aggressive to the surrounding tissues. The fracture and rod placcement are not causes of nerve impingement in your wife's condition. The rods used are incredibly small and simply overlie the vertebrae...they connect a screw from one level to a screw on another level to give added stability. It is likely that your wife is just feeling irritation vs nerve impingement. Give it some more time...our body has it's own timetable to heal itself...and it usually is far from similar to OUR timetable! Best of Luck! Guest guest
, The revisions pretty much took care of my sciatica, but I still get a recurrence now and then. For me it starts up higher and runs the length of one leg. Thankfully it does not seem to last long. Before I had my flatback deformity corrected, it would last for a long time and would be excruciating. I also still get numbness and tingling in various other parts of my body. I have been meaning to research just how long it takes damaged (e.g., surgically cut or injured) nerves to regenerate. I get the distinct impression that I still have some funny business going on with my nerves as a result of the various surgeries. My last revision procedure took place almost six years ago! I am so sorry to hear you have this pain you can't even suppress with narcotics. It is possible for you to take any of the medications for nerve pain? Do you think you should see Dr. K. again? Good grief! Ironically, I was writing most of this post in a funny position I should not have been in -- half- kneeling on the floor -- and guess who's got another little burst of sciatic pain! -- let's see if I can " stretch it out " . . . . Best, > > Has anyone had a nerve-like leg pain start up 2-3yrs post revision? The way I describe it, my husband thinks it sounds like sciatic nerve pain. It goes down the side and mostly back of my leg, mostly on the upper leg down to right behind my knee. It sort of throbs and stabs, never really easing up. Sometimes if somebody stretches me it will give a few minutes of relief, but it doesn't last long. I haven't done anything new or strange lately that would have contributed to this, or at least not that I can think of! Taking narcotic pain meds (i.e. norco) doesn't help much, because they now give me horrible insomnia. > > Has anyone had this type of pain develop so far after revision? I'll be 3yrs post-op this July. I sit about 95% of my waking hours, and my butt has been killing me lately too. > > >
