Will pray for Miss V to get to come home soon and that Bayley will not have any setbacks from this as well. Also prayers for Jo as she is with Miss V at the hospital. Guest guest
Hi everyone, coming to please ask for thoughts and prayers for .....she had her niece come get me at midnight last night, which was a big deal b/c I just had surgery and was all hooked up to my "ice machine" ... proceeded to show me a round, red, raised area on her upper thigh, not looking like a bug bite, and much larger. Between her cvid (genetic immune deficiency), and the mtx and Enbrel having the ability to further suppress her immune system, and seeing stories in the media, my worry button switched on, so I phoned our nurse advice line - they said if it was 2" x 2" or she had a fever, she needed to go to ER at once...couldn't find thermometer (of course) but it measured 1.5 x 1.5, so nurse go to urgent care first thing in a.m. This morning, had 4 spots, 2 on her thigh, one on her back, one on her opposite shoulder. The bigger one was now bigger. At Urgent Care, she had a fever and by the time the dr came in all spots were increased in size again. Dr says it is cellulitis. He gave her a shot of Rocephin, and oral Cefazolin (I don't know either of these antibiotics), circled all areas and said if they increase at all, or if her temp increases, take her to the ER immediately - even if things go okay, bring her back tomorrow for another shot of antibiotics. How do you get cellulitis? Her rheumy (per phone) questioned that it was cellulitis as "it is unusual to get cellulitis from an injection site rxn" but I kept trying to tell her it could not be anyway, because she did not even inject herself on that leg this week, and there are 4 sites...(sometimes she does not listen!) There was no evident break in her skin, no bug bites he could see, and the areas were so removed from one another! This seemed to just appear, but the dr we saw seemed very certain and concerned that it was cellulitis. I don't know how else to explain why she also has a fever....Most important to me, thanks you for any prayers for ...I would really appreciate it. Guest guest
Hugs .... That doesn't sound like cellulitis being that the area is no where near the injection site or any other skin injury! Grrr, I hate when doctors dismiss things and just come up with something that doesn't make sense??? I dont know.... I surely hope that things work out and that this will go away or be diagnosed properly if it isn't cellulitis. Definately thinking/praying for you all. Guest guest
Hi Issadora, well, after the trip to Urgent care, the red areas began to get centers, looking like they could be mosquito bites (and she had been on the grass at her sisters, but, with long pants on...?) She hasn't reacted to mosquito bites since she was 5. But, the large one had definitely spread beyond the circle the urgent care dr had drawn - so, per his instructions, we were off to the ER....ugh....First ER dr suspected allergic rxn....gave her an injection of Benadryl, and a different antibiotic, then, they observed her ...drs change of shift...new dr said definitely not an allergic rxn b/c zero reduction in swelling and redness and he absolutely agrees with the Urgent care dr - no doubt it IS cellulitis, probably started by the tiniest little bite she wasn't even aware of, and within hours, there's a problem. (The other three were "bites" as they got smaller with inject of Benadryl).Meanwhile, she is off Enbrel and mtx until this is all cleared. We are to watch very closely for changes and return if any changes in fever, color, size, swelling, etc. It's a little bigger today - not dramatically - it's so confusing when one dr is an "alarmist", and one is serious, but calm and cool-headed...so, we will watch it through-out the day til Urgent care closes (do NOT want to expose her to ER again) and hope to avoid the IV antibiotics. Thanks for listening, Issadora, and especially for the prayers. I think the immune system part is what makes me most nervous for her, and I would imagine some of the other mothers can relate...I know she needs the Enbrel, and it is really helping, which is wonderful, but I do get anxious about how it affects her already weak immune system. There I go rambling....sorry....How is your wrist doing? Any closer to getting an appt? I never did hear back if you have any chance of seeing an orthopedist, did you ever receive that e-mail from me?Well, I've gone on long enough. Hope you have a beautiful day - this So Cal weather we are having is like summer!Take care,Issadora <FlyfreeIzzie@...> wrote: Hugs .... Guest guest
, My son had a strange bout with cellulitis several years ago. It was around his eye. It came on very suddenly. He had a severe headache and around his eye was swollen and red. He was hospitalized for a couple of days and treated with IV rochephin. (this is a strong antibiotic) he was sent home with I believe the same oral antibiotic that you mentioned. Take back to the doc on Monday so that thay they can run some labs and make sure that they are kicking this infection to the curb. P.S. If the size of the " spots " increases overnight or her fever continues then I would suggest returning to the ER tonight. Give us an update when you can. Guest guest
keeping you and in prayer. Cellulitis can be triggered by just the smallest bug bite that you might not even know you have. Since her immune is low anyway I would not be real surprised. The antibiotic they have her on is very strong and hopefully that will get rid of it. If her fever goes up or the area spreads, though I would get her back in right away. Keep us posted.
