Manipulation is not that bad. My back hurt more afterwards than my knee. You will be sore for a few days. You will start PT right away. Any where form 3 to 5 days a week depends on drs orders. I have trouble with my right knee. I ended up with a revision in Oct. 2006. If you have any more questions just ask and I will try to help.Shirley Manipulation under

anesthesia

Brad, I'm sure you will hear from others here who have had successful manipulation. I had some scar tissue after BTKRs in September, but fortunately aggressive massage by my PT seemed to have broken it up. It hurt, but amazingly it worked. I wanted to share with you you that a coworker, who had knee repair not replacement in September, had a very difficult issue with scar tissue. She tried returning to work twice and had to leave. She then had manipulation and is as good as new. I hope it works as well for you. From what I hear from others, you will have some discomfort after manipulation but then will feel great relief as well as

progress in ROM. If you check previous threads on the Joint Replacement page, you will find a one started by Alan, one member who recently had manipulation. Brad,

First of all, your ROM sounds like what I had with my original TKR

back in 8/2/2006! I had two manipulations and it never got to an

acceptable ROM so in 11/14/2006 I had a total knee revision where

they removed old parts, new surgeon, new brand of parts and removed 8

ounces of scar tissue. I have ROM of about 16 to 90 right now. My

femur fractured above the implant so the surgeon will not do a

manipulation on it.

All of my manipulations resulted in pain and swelling and blood that

is visible for a few weeks under the skin. Black and blue calf

muscle with first one. It is correct that you will have less pain in

the hospital if you have an in dwelling pain catheter in your back.

That allows you to use a cpm machine with ROM set high for the few

days you are in hospital. If you have it done as out patient as I

did on my first one, I would say it is almost a waste of time as it

will scar up again unless you are pain free enough to keep it moving

in the entire ROM.

Best of Luck with yours.

Hi Everyone. My PMD wants to do MUA (Manipulation Under Anesthesia) to help

with my scoliosis and DDD. He says I am a good candidate for it. My discogram

did not show the expected result. I have 2 herniated discs and tear L5 S1 and

they were not painful during the discogram. Only the nondiseased disc was

painful which was not the expected result! WHY????

So...alot of money and alot of time off from work will have to go into taking

this MUA procedure and his prognosis was not even guaranteed! He said, " it

might help break up the adhesions. " I think he just wants me to get off the

Lyrica and Vicodin...yah...I do too but I have to save up sick time at work AND

MONEY because this procedure is not covered under my insurance and will cost

around $5000!!

So...my question is. Anyone ever had MUA and what were your results? Is it

worth it? Any dangers? SIde effects?

Thanks

Hi Devora, Even 1 1/2 years later, I still push my knee as far as it will bend

daily. Even on the plane today, I stretch and bend as much as I can. And walk

and go up and down stairs as much as you can. It seems to work for me. I still

have not gotten equal flex with my knees, but I still hope to get there!

All the best, Joan, back in NYC

Subject: Manipulation under anesthesia

Hello, I seem to have stopped getting more flexion (105-110 degrees). I am

heading down to my surgeon this week and will most likely be having my knee

manipulated on Wednesday. Anybody have any advice on how to keep the flexion

going during my long ride home in the van (about 5-8 hours depending on how many

stops we take) Any advice after I get home? I'd love to hear from you. Devora
