Guest guest Posted May 4, 2003 Report Share Posted May 4, 2003 hi joe, the epidural not bad at all. the big pain is nwhen they put it in but even thats only for a short time. also you can talk to your antistheoligest[ boy my spellings terrible] i had one on my rebuilding of my ankle and also on my bone decompression on my left hip. hopefully my replacement will hold until winter before i have it, but it will be soon.you know being a bricklayer by trade when they rebuilt my ankle i had no idea they took a bone graft with a hammer and chisel. well i heard the doctor ping ping pinging on my bone to try to get the graft. now being awake i said to the doctor the only way you're going to get a graft from a fossil is drill a few holes and then hit it i'm tired of listening to this pinging. of course he said can't you give him something to shut him up. of which i replied, i might not be able to see you but i can hear your every move. anyway what i'm trying to tell you is the epidual is really good and heck why should only the doctors be able to talk during the operation. if theres one thing i like to do it's talk. bob >From: " ph G. Orthopedic surgery in loud and I would not think they would make you do this unless there is some reason that it would not be safe for you to have general anesthesia. Also I have to have a bone graft. I have a number of cysts on my pelvis that have to be removed and rebuilt with a bone graft. Can anyone give me any info on this. Does it prolong the recovery period. Do I have to be even more careful after the surgery than if I didn't have to have this done? Will I be out of commission longer than the usual recovery period (driving, walking, etc...) Any info that anyone can give me will be greatly appreciated. If at all possible I would not want to be awake during surgery. It's disgusting enough without hearing what they are doing. As far as having other cyst taken off, it shouldn't't slow you down much. The key to getting back to normal is exercise. You must do these at home at least 2 times a day and walk. Do not stay in bed, except for short naps when you get tired. Even after 6-8 weeks, at which time you will be doing really well you must do all your exercises everyday and keep active, water aroebics is a great exercise for arthritis. If you keep a good attitude , be cheerful, stay busy you will be able to do anything you want. I recommend that you stay in the hospital and go to rehab if at all possible instead of taking P.T. at home. I found I did much better going from hosp.surgery room to rehab and by the time I got home I didn't't even need anyone to stay with me. I had it set up to do my own meals and had a small cart with wheel on it and put my laundry and trash etc. on it and wheeled it around my house. I also used a scarf to put around my ankle or calf to help me put my leg upon the bed. This is the hardest thing to do after surgery. Have your house all set up before you go to the hospital as far as taking up throw rugs and get some bid pillow to put on a chair or couch to make you higher. Well as I said I have had a total hip then 5 years later had a revision with a broken femur and will have surgery on the other hip May 19th. I do bible classes, crafts, sewing, etc. to myself busy. I as doing mosiac. Its so easy but takes a long time and you can sit and do it. I could write about this all day. If you have any other questions I would be happy to give you my feelings about it. You are sedated heavily, and are not aware of anything. The spinal anesthesia allows you to wake up more quickly and more easily, and there is less nausea after spinal anesthesia. My husband had previously had a lumbar laminectomy, but was able to have the spinal anesthesia. The bone grafting will cause you more soreness, and pain w/ movement than if you had just had the THP, but it will depend on where these cysts are, and how extensive they are. I would not expect them to have significant impact on your rehab. Actually you are lucky it worked at all; only 30% of people get relief from an epidural. I've had a dozen epidurals, facet blocks & si joint blocks and not one worked for me. For the ones that the epidural is effective, the relief can last from a few days up to 2-3 months. It sounds like you got good relief so you can have up to 3 esi's a year in the same area; more if the Dr. does it in a different area. The Dr was very gentle and they numb you up really good with Novocaine--just as if you were getting a tooth filled at the dentist. Then they inject some dye which allows the Dr to guide the needle as flexible as a horse hair into the neck-- you lie on your tummy on a flat table. Then he injects you with a combo of steroids and then you're done-- all in about 10 minutes. The wait was longer than the procedure. I did not stop feeling crippled until about two days or so out of the injection then I felt like KING KING-- now it is wearing off slowly. The nerve root pain is coming back--- and my neck is starting to feel bad again. You can have 4 in one year, spaced evenly I suppose. Hope that this helps. I have known of people who have had relief for quite some time from them though, so I think it just depends on the person and their specific pain/injury. My neuro surgeon did tell me though that sometimes it can take a few times (up to 3) for the injections to fully work, so it may be worth your while giving it another go as you may get more relief for a longer period trying again. Guest guest Posted April 6, 2008 Report Share Posted April 6, 2008 I have had two esi's in the past 6 months both hurt badly not the injection its self i guess but when he hit the nerve i came up off the table.both times it seemed to help a bit on the 3rd day and lasted till about the 7th day then i hurt worse in some places than i did before the injections.i have decided against having more as i cant see any relief and at 500.00 a pop (my portion after insurance) i cant afford somthing that doesnt work. --------------------------------- You rock. Guest guest Posted April 7, 2008 Report Share Posted April 7, 2008 Hi...I haven't read all the postings about this yet but wanted to chime in and say that I have had many epidurals and radio frequency blocks (both cervical and lumbar) and for every procedure that I have had done, except the in office facet joint injections, I have been in the hospital - out patient - and have been asleep for the whole thing. I have heard that not all doctors do it this way, but it looks like most of you here have been awake. YIKES! I wouldn't like that!! I wont even look at the needles when I'm getting wheeled into the OR for prepping....or the in office ones....I'd rather not see, or feel a thing! Best Wishes! I had 2 nerve blocks from a pain mgmnt Dr awake and they were quite uncomfortable and the Dr was such an insensitive jerk. I never went back to him and found another group of pain doctors. There policy is to make you as relaxed and comfortable as possible. They told me I'd feel sleepy but be awake; well I had a total of 16 injections and a spinal cord stimulator put in and taken out by this group and I don't remember one of them, I was out cold!
