Guest guest
Hi Becky, Welcome to . Water grains are another of those Symbiotic Cultures of Bacteria and Yeast (SCOBY). They look like small cut pieces of glass and when fed properly they grow fast. Once you figure out what they like and get them growing really well you get to eat your extras for more probiotic benefit. Before you rule out dairy products check out oil pulling. I just made my first post about it on our sister group set up for off topics: _OffTopicChat/ I think a lot of our allergies are a result of a clogged system and poor digestion. Oil pulling seems to be the ticket to fixing these and a lot of other problems. It also doesn't help to be using pasteurized milk products. Raw milk products don't cause nearly the problems, especially when raw milk is transformed into kefir. Guest guest
Thanks for the welcome Marilyn. I did check oil pulling out. IT does sound interesting. Yes, I agree the allergies seem to be something malfunctioning. However, I am extremmely allergic to milk, even when it is in acidophilus pills and the claim is non-dairy. What do the water kefir grow on? Are they the same as the millk kefir? Do they have the same acidopohilus tylpe nutrients? Sugar water and dried fruit. Are they the same as the millk kefir? No. You were supposed to look at the link. Here it is again: http://www.kefirlady.com/waterkefirgrains.htm As I say, they are a " whole different animal " . Do > they have the same acidopohilus tylpe nutrients? They have some things in common. Milk kefir is superior methinks. My favorite non-dairy probiotic drink is kombucha, then water kefir. That may change as I'm starting to add diluted sea water to my water grain recipe. This makes water kefir that much more nutritious with those 90 minerals in there now. Guest guest
My milk grains are multiplying like crazy! They are very happy. I discovered about 5 drops of lemon flavored stevia cuts the tart enough for me. However, my water grains do not multiply very fast. I buy ozarka spring water to use because all my water is filtered. I use a little RO water out of my water dispenser because it comes out hot and I use that to dissolve the sugar. I use mostly self-dried apples and bananas. I have started adding a pinch of sea salt to maybe make up for lack of minerals in the water. Seems to develop more fizz with the salt. Separate question - how bad are sulfated dried fruits to use? We got some for christmas but my son didn't like the taste.

You mix 5 ounces of French Celtic sea salt in one gallon of water. That is sea water. You take four ounces of that and mix with one gallon of water. That is sea fertilizer. Use sea fertilizer straight to water all your plants, soak sprouting seeds and to rinse your sprouts, and...this is what you've been waiting for..., put two ounces per quart of sugar solution for your water grains. I'm using RO with these added sea minerals for an experiment. They are not growing by leaps and bounds by any means, but they are staying big and that's important to me. Normally using straight RO will cause the water grains to break apart into little pieces. Not good. Separate question - how bad are sulfated dried fruits to use? Sulphur kills bacteria. Water grains are a type of scoby (Symbiotic Culture of Bacteria and Yeast) so don't use sulfured fruit. Marilyn

Are they still big or have they broken apart into little pieces? I have several pieces that are a good 1/4 inch across, but most are less than that. Being relatively new to this, I am not sure what " normal " is. > I have been experimenting with sea solids fertilizer. A question about salt - doesn't salt kill yeast? or are these concentrations to low to be a problem.

It is a very low concentration. 4 ounces of sea water diluted in one gallon of water. That's fertilizer. I take two ounces of that solution and put it in a quart of sugar water for my water grains. The water grains are getting 92 minerals. Sea solids are the best. Marilyn

So a twenty dollar bill. I send a package of first food for them so you can get started right away giving you a couple days to get any ingredients you don't have on hand. Anyone wanting water grains can e-mail me and I'll confirm everything in the next e-mail to you. Thanks, Marilyn marilynjarz@...
Guest guest
Are you worried about contamination or something? They don't have to grow much to produce tasty water kefir. When I make a " bad batch " I turn it into vinegar. Guest guest
Well it taste good to me it just won't get fizzy after I seal and ferment it for an extra day. So I guess that makes me wonder if enough sugar has been consumed. --------------------------------------------------- Try this, after straining, add a teaspoon of sugar then seal and ferment an extra day or two. Guest guest
Marilyn, I received my water kefir grains from you about a week or so ago and the grains have already more than doubled in size. I want to increase the amount of water and sugar in my jar. I also add raisins when I ferment. I'm currently using 1/4 cup sugar with 4 cups water. If I want to increase to 8 cups of water, should I divide the grains in two jars or put all 8 cups into one jar and use about 1/3 cups sugar with the raisins? Thanks, Sharon
Guest guest
When I double the recipe because there are double the water grains I double everything, water and sugar. Guest guest
Is there a benefit to water over milk grains? Guest guest
You put over done water kefir into in a glass jar and put a cloth lid on with rubber band. Do not disturb and six months later you have vinegar. Marilyn ____________________________________________ How do you turn it into vinegar? Shari > > Are you worried about contamination or something? Guest guest
No, not in my opinion. Milk kefir is superior. On second thought, water kefir is way cheaper to make. That's a benefit I suppose. Guest guest
I unintentionally swallowed a little. Something interesting is going on with my water kefir. Instead of turning to alcohol, it's turning to vinegar - a really tasty vinegar. Each day I feed it more sugar. Maybe this is how KT scoby got it's start. Anyone else have this happen?
