Guest guest
Hi, I have gastroparesis, so I'm not able to process fiber. I'd like to learn more about the different ways to break foods down, especially vegetables. I'd like to know if there is a way to break down or pre-digest the fiber in vegetables. I've already been juicing, but I want other options besides that. I also have gastritis, so many different foods are irritating to the lining of my stomach. For instance a lot of fermented food produce alcohol which causes a lot of pain for me. Anything really spicy or highly acidic is a problem. Does anyone have any suggestions? Thank you so much,
Guest guest
Use enzymes with cellulase in them. Guest guest
Thanks Bethann!  Does the cellulase break down both the soluble and insoluble fiber?  After I pour the cellulase on the veggies, how long before it breaks down the fiber? Are there certain veggies that are easier to break down than others?  Jen > > Hi, > I have gastroparesis, so I'm not able to process fiber. Guest guest
You take cellulase in a capsule or a tablet with your meals, although you can find liquid enzymes also. There are several types of cellulase enzymes. If you read the ingredients on the bottles of enzymes it should tell you what's in it. Insoluble fibers I'm not too sure about, since I haven't read up on that one and it's good for scrubbing out the intestines and keeping things running..... err smoothly. Guest guest
You might try taking konjac with meals. It IS a fiber, and a superlative one at that, but it also has the ability to sequester food so it is less irritating and digests over a longer stretch of the gut, which allows the gut to heal and allows the digestive enzymes to work better. I started taking it when I had an ulcer, and it seems to have worked for that too. I take about 1/4 tsp. of the powder, mixed with water, with meals. (You can also buy IPX tablets and take one of those). Many raw vegies are irritating to the gut. I can't do much raw cabbage, or raw onions. However, if either one has been soaked in salt water for a bit, they are ok. Guest guest
Thanks Bethann, With the gastroparesis, the insoluble fiber actually has a hard time exiting the stomach. It just stays there, and can harden into a stone called a bezoar that can cause an obstruction which blocks food from exiting the stomach. So fiber is actually dangerous for me to eat. That's why I was trying to break it down before it enters my stomach. I will look into the liquid enzymes, thanks for the heads up on that. Take care, Jen > > > > Hi, > > I have gastroparesis, so I'm not able to process fiber. Guest guest
Hi , FYI Instead of finding a way to break down the fiber in vegetables, why not heal the gut so you once again can enjoy vegetables. I have been on a plan (diet, if you will) that truely heals the gut. I am by no means cured (contipation, IBS, leaky gut, etc. etc. etc.), but I have come along way towad healing as well as many others. If you are interested, you can find more info. at www.GAPS.com and thru the talk group at GAPShelp@.... Good luck! Guest guest
, Not sure if you are aware, but there is a protocol called Gut and Psychology Syndrome and book by Dr. Natasha McBride as well as a support group for GAPS, for short. Many people on the list are healing or have recovered from these conditions and restored their gut flora. If you want more info, feel free to email me or just Google for more info. Best to you, Millie
