My friend and I immediately went to the desk and ask for another room, since we had requested a smoke-free room. They did not have one for us, but offered to put us up in another hotel! We didn't have to go, since someone checked out before we could even leave, but I will not stay in a room that has smoke in it. My husband and I when we travel, or my friend and I when we go to conferences ALWAYS ask for the smoke free room. As to church, fortunately there seem to be so many people in our church and choir with allergies that heavy duty perfume doesnt' seem to be a problem. It's a good thing because our choir room, while large enough to accomodate the large choir, becomes stuffy with choir and orchestra in it! We do have a good AC/ventilation system, however, so I feel blessed. We have had choir members in the past, though, whose choir robes smelled like the cosmetic department at Dillard's! Haven't noticed it lately. the only problem I ever have is that there is a woman who occasionally sits in front of me in church and she pours on the smelly stuff......But she is not an every Sunday worshipper, so I do have some reprieve--or if someone gets her seat before she gets there! I agree that maybe talking to the pastor or asking for a nice, tactful notice to be put in a church bulletin asking people to be considerate of those with allergies to strong sweet smells...... I get my fourth shot tomorrow--Have had a touch of asthma the last two days--not bad, just enough to be irritating. Up until then, I was really feeling great. I do think the shots are already helping as I breezed through the ragweed. And so far apart from a sneeze here and there, I have had no problems. We were tired and ready to relax when we got there but as we opened the door, we were gassed with the remnants of cigarette smoke. I have been in areas that have had smokers in the past without problems but this place was HORRIBLE! There was NO WAY I would have lived in that room for 5 minutes much less overnight. I went to the front desk to request another room but they were filled up. We almost stayed the night in the car but as we were leaving they had a cancellation and we got a SMOKE FREE room. The rule would apply to everyone equally so people are less apt to get offended, hopefully. If you mention someone ( or other members of the group) are extremely allergic and asthmatic to any kind of designer fragrances, etc, I would hope others would be more understanding and sympathetic. The fleabag motel/hotels get heavy with the spray deodorizers to mask the stench of ages. It's a double whammy! You learn to sleep on the balcony in winter with your coat on. My biggest problem is dust mites and I've yet to see a hotel room that's proofed for dust mites. I usually bring my own covers, which makes it a little easier. So far I have not been bothered by dust mites--but there is always a first! These days, the greater fear is from bedbugs! Got my 4th shot today. Absolutely no reactions to any of my shots.
