Guest guest
Yee Ha ! I went to the doctor today and I am off prednisone completely. I have been on it probably 2 yrs. straight and off and on since early 90's. I hope I can handle it . Xolair is great. I still am taking many other asthma meds but I am thrilled.I have been on xolair since mid february.A little over 8 months. Sharon
Guest guest
Congratulations! Just being off of the prednisone is a mile stone in itself. I will probably be on some asthma meds the rest of my life, even taking the xolair, because of lung damage. But the doctor thinks my bouts of respiratory infections which exacerbate the asthma will be fewer and farther between. My infections usually start with allergic rhinitis and then settle in my lungs! Sooooo Even with the new north wind blowing outside, I am really feeling very good today. Have only used my inhaler once since I got up and I have been going strong physically since early this morning! My fourth xolar shot is next week! Yea! So--just being off the prednisone is cause for celebration. If I never have to go back on it, that will be fine with me! sharon blizzard <psychoratzilla@...> wrote: Yee Ha ! Guest guest
That's great news Sharon. I was talking to my pulmo last night and his severe patients - those pred dependent - have all been able to get off pred by being on Xolair but they still aren't able to function as though they don't have asthma. He said it's unlikely they ever will but being off pred is a tremendous benefit of taking Xolair. Well wishes and I hope you continue to feel well!! sharon blizzard <psychoratzilla@...> wrote: Yee Ha ! I went to the doctor today and I am off prednisone completely. Guest guest
I'm sorry to hear you had to lose part of a lung, but I understand from what I read that it can extend the life of a person to get rid of the diseased part of the lung. I am glad to hear you are doing so well--that is encouraging. I know you, too, give thanks for every day you can breathe freely and really accomplish a lot. Days like today, when I not only have few to no breathing problems, but lots of energy, are not very often. I can be breathing okay, but feel fatigued (I think it is from some of the meds I take, and I also know that the more humidity, the more sluggish I feel). It was also a good thing I felt good since I had so much that had to get done! So Becki, keep on enjoying life and giving thanks for every day that you are able to breathe freely! Bless you.... Guest guest
That's awesome news, Sharon! I'm thrilled for you! You said you have been on Xolair 8 months. How long did it take for you to have noticeable improvement? Congrats! Another Xolair success story! > > Yee Ha ! Guest guest
I started to see minor differences in the beginning. I did have withdrawal issues while tapering off the steroids and when i started tapering off it would take awhile to feel better. During the tapering period I noticed I would have to use my inhaler as well as nebs more. I would feel more tired as well and physically hurt more. I would use hot tea with honey and lemon to help get rid of excess mucus. I also used mucinex and allergy pills more. I take allergy shots as well. You must communicate with your dr. I am convinced that this is your best bet with getting off of steroids. You are still able to get infections as well as setbacks. Notice what is happenning with you and be able to relate it to your doctor. He or she relies on what you say. It was very necessary for me to take meds as prescribed. Before I took most of my meds but not all. I have learned through trial and error that these meds.as prescribed were very important. It took awhile to get to the point of no steroids. Xolair made the diffference but the other meds are equally as important. Sharon
Guest guest
Sharon: Great advice. I have found over the years in talking with people that have asthma, that their #1 problem is they don't want to take all of the meds, or they think they should take them only when they are already sick. I always encourage people to check with their doctor to see exactly how long they should take their meds and then take them exactly as prescribed. I know that if I happen to miss a day or two because I run out (my bad) it really affects the way I feel, so believe me, I try not to run out of any of my meds. I also agree with keeping the doctor informed about reactions when coming off the steroids--or even while on them. After reading the side effects when my doc first put me on steroids, I asked him what I could do to help alleviate or at least lessen the side effects. He gave me some ideas which I'll not share because everyone is different and what worked for me way back then may not work for others or there may be some new thoughts out there. I will say that he told me to take calcium and be sure to have blood work done on a regular basis by my gp to make sure the levels of calcium and potassium were where they should be (and the other things that pred can effect). So I did that--and tried to make sure I was in good health otherwise. Thanks Sharon, for sharing some important reminders to all of us--to take our meds as prescribed for optimum benefit! Follow the doctors orders and then let him/her know the results. psychoratzilla@... wrote: I started to see minor differences in the beginning. Guest guest
I've taken Prednisone both regularly and for flares but I've never had that problem. I have no idea what could cause that problem. God bless. -----Original Message----- From: Rheumatoid Arthritis [mailto:Rheumatoid Arthritis ] On Behalf Of Vicki Hoyt Sent: Saturday, June 02, 2007 5:45 AM Rheumatoid Arthritis Subject: prednisone Hi, I've been taking 10 mg of prednisone for a flare in my shoulders for less than a week. I noticed my knuckles are turning black and blue and they are getting achey. Is this normal when you take prednisone? I haven't used this for quite a while. Guest guest
Dear Vicki- You can tend to bruise easily when on prednisone especially if its in combo with another blood thinner like Ibuprofen. If you tend to use your hands alot, try and be gentle with them and be consious of banging them against anything. Immerse them or use a little ice on them. Compression gloves also help to protect them and support them. If they get worse, definately call your doctor and see him or her.
