Guest guest
I have always been 5'2". After the DDD I shrunk to 5' 1 1/2". At my last appointment 3 years after revision I was 5' 2 1/2". Peggy [ ] Did anyone become taller after revision? I don't mean just standing up straighter, but is the spine ever further sraightened resulting in a little more height? Guest guest
Pamela, After revision I was back up to my height as an earlier adult. When measured prior to revision I was 5'11 " ...after 6'1 " (or a little under). I think most of the height came as a result of the cages that are placed when they remove the discs that had pretty much collapsed! Of course, I was also able to stand up much better too. Naturally, your milage may vary! Take Care, Cam
Guest guest
I just know I was shorter after my revision. I was about 5 ft. 5 & 3/4 " (basically I called myself 5'6 " ). And now I'm about 5' 5 " if i'm lucky. Yeah, Dr. Hu used cages and she restored my natural curve (back-waist) curve, and I'm still shorter--don't understand that! Guest guest
Pamela, Many of us got inches in height back, I was down to 5'3 " and am back up to my normal 5' 5 and 1/2 inches. Nothing like being able to stand up tall again, was a very powerful moment when I stood for the first time, and I've been lucky enough to be there when a couple other members did their first standing, tears all around, it's amazing. My height improvement came from the work done in the thorasic area, cranking straighter an upper curve untouched during my earlier revisions and Harrington Rod surgery. But many do get height improvement from Lumbar revision( fusion to the sacrum). My guess with that is things may have flattened out with the loss of disc space material, and when cages are installed, some height comes back, and also from the osteotomies. It may also be the appearance of loss height from the forward bending, and being upright also makes you appear shorter. Anyway I'd rather be upright than not, who wouldn't, good to see the sky, rahter than carpet or the sidewalk. Guest guest
Hi Pamela, Obviously we are all different, and any number of things could be going on with your neck. However, it is no all that unusual for neck issues to crop up in our population, either because the flatback posture is causing us to hold our heads in an unusual way...or because the rod and associated fusion may have shortened the life of your neck discs....just to name a few things that could be going on. You will probably be evaluated to determine what needs addressing first. Some doctors choose to see if re-establishing normal posture helps the neck alignement and give enough improvement for the patient to be cofortable again. Sometimes its deemed appropriate to deal with the neck first...and then on to the other trouble areas. It really is impossible to tell...but is why you need to find yourself a specialist who really understands the intricacies of what you are up against. Be sure to start your own personal " Question List " to have handy when you have your consult. Take Care, Cam
Guest guest
Hi Pamela, I gained 3 inches back in height after revision. I had my first surgery (Harrington rod) in 1978 @ 13 years old and was almost 5’2” after that. Didn’t grow, at least in height, since the first surgery. Shrunk down to 4’11” a few years ago due to collapsed discs. Had revision surgery in February 2009 and am now a full 5’2” in height. Collapsed discs were replaced with cages which accounts for most of the height gain. Feel great since revision for the most part, but have some neck and shoulder issues which I believe are due to body getting adjusted to new posture. We’re all works in progress. As Kam said so well, it’s a matter of accepting that. Wouldn’t be here today if it wasn’t for the original surgery so thankful for having my life saved back then with the knowledge that was available then. Thankful for latest surgery for giving me a greatly improved quality of life. We’re certainly a unique group and it helps to share information with each other. We’re not alone in this battle. Guest guest
Jodi, words of encouragement are what I need. Does anyone have a cage in their neck discs? Or are cages only placed in lumbar discs? How many cages do you have?Pamela From: jlg267@...Date: Sun, 5 Dec 2010 14:40:52 -0800Subject: RE: [ ] Did anyone become taller after revision? Guest guest
I gained height after my first surgery as a teenager. I gained 2 inches in height. But now after my revision I didn't see that dramatic change in height. Of course, I could be wrong though. I didn't take accurate measurements after my revision surgery. Guest guest
Hi Pamela, I asked Dr. about that and he told me he it's a combination of 3 things - cages, ( I have two ) correction, ( my spine is very ridged so he couldn't get much ) and straightening via the osteotomy so when I am measured I stand straight now. I think the standing straight was most of my gaining two inches. Hope this answers your question.
