ie, I have a very good friend with Lupas and rhumetoid arthritis and in between Remicade treatments, she requires Oxycontin also, she has brought this to my attention a couple of weeks ago, she has the very same fears and concerns that you have. It is a shame that for all you guys who need it, may be shut off from it just because of junk heads. Marsha

Dear Marsha,

Thank you for understanding my fear. It always feels good to know that

I'm not the only person with these concerns. It tells me I'm not completely

out of touch. LOL.

I'm very sorry that your friend is so ill. I hope there are some good

developments for her in the future. Please tell her I will be thinking of

both of you. I'll say a little prayer for you two.

Everyone, please take good care of yourselves tomorrow.

Love and Peace,

I am sorry to hear about your troubles and all of the pain that you endure.

about the oxycontin, it is time realeased oxycodone. I was a drug rep who sold

pain meds for a year. The good news is that if you cant get oxycontin you

should still be able to get the percocet or percodan with the same active drug

but these are not time released so you would have to take 2-3 times a day but

its still going to work for you and there is not the risk of it being taken away

since it is not time released it does not give people the high they are using

the contin for. I also sold the lortab and hydrocodone products and the perco's

are one step on on the pain killing effects. I hope this info is helpful and

maybe you could ask to get a script for the percocet just to try it and see what

you think(its avail in many generic forms and name brand)

Ray, The only thing with the prednizone is all the side effects with being

on it long term. I was on it 10 years for ulcerative colitis, and it really

hurt my body, but it is the only thing now that can relieve some of the pain.

But the Doc took me off of it for now since I started bruising badly. It

really helped with the ulcers in my eyes. Now I use steroid drops. But I

would consider small doses even though I have the problem, just to be able to

have some sort of life. Good Luck EFD Oregon

I rarely defend any drug, but I took Oxycontin for more than 18 months prior

to having shoulder surgery. I took it every single day during that time

period and I never got addicted. Of course, I never crushed it, snorted it or

shot it into my veins. Had I not taken Oxycontin I probably would've whacked

myself from the pain I was in because of the injuries I suffered in the

rollover accident, and eventually I had complete shoulder reconstruction and

two

years of rehab during which I took Vicodin and Percodan for the pain of

physical therapy. In certain situations these drugs perform a valuable

function --

to relieve pain. Of course, Oxy had the potential for abuse, but for those

of us who take it/took it according to instructions it can be a lifesaver. I

never went through a weaning process either -- when I didn't need the drug,

I stopped taking it without having any kind of withdrawal or adverse effects.

I don't believe there is a generic for oxy yet. The company's hold the patent

for 18 years i think it is, so there won't be any for a while. Oxy is meant to

be taken only once every 12 hours, so I'd be concerned that you are taking it

three times a day. And yes, itching is definitely a side effect and I don't

think it goes away with time, but it is definitely dose dependant, The more you

take, the more you itch. It will get better with a lower dose (or should). Some

people find relief from an anti-histamine. Ask your pharmacist about this.

Hope everyone is ok today. I was actually about to post a question about

Oxycontin too when I saw the latest thread... weird. : )

I just started taking Oxycontin (for the first time ever) on Wednesday and it

has actually given me some relief (hallelujah! ) - I am taking 30 mg three times

a day with Percocet every 6 hours as needed. On Thursday I noticed my skin was

itching... it is not excruciating or anything, more like annoying. Just feels

like my skin is dry and lotion does not take care of it. It does say on the pkg

insert that itching might be a side effect, but what I was wondering is if any

of you have experienced itching and if so, did it eventually go away once your

body got used to the medicine?

On a side note, my pharmacist said there wasn't a generic for Oxycontin - did

she fib or is it just not available where I live maybe?

Jenn,

I am sorry you are itching so. It truly is a miserable itch! I do that when

I start any of the long actings but it does go away for me.

Good luck and God bless,

Hey ,

What would you think of a pain doc that prescribed 4 (20mg) oxycodene, 3

atavans, 2 percocets, 2 ambiens, 1 paxel per day to a 73 yr. old woman. As much

as I can appreciate a good pain doc, this one is killing my mom. She sleeps all

the time and even after we told him, he still wrote the prescriptions again. I

would appreciate your opinion.

That didn't sound right to me either, I agree with , my pharmacist told

me that doctors won't write for more than every 12 hours, so I would recheck the

dosage time to be sure.

Hope this helps.

Hi,

I'm not , but I just could not believe it when I saw what you wrote, no

wonder your mom is sleeping so much. I don't know the circumstances, but that

seems an awful lot.

Sorry I didn't mean to butt in, and I am not in anyway a health care provider.

This is just my opinion. I take the same meds but not in that formula, or I

would be wiped out all the time and I am just 51.

I certainly hope you can get it worked out for her sake. My prayers are with

your mother.

Thanks for your concern. You can't imagine the problem she is giving us,

accusing us of trying to mess with her doctors, not caring if she hurts, etc. I

even called the doc and spoke with him and told him our concerns and he said he

would change some stuff around but when she went for her prescription, he filled

yourself, you can forget it. We are so torn between pushing past her addictions

to help her and then realizing that at 73, you can't just take her off this

stuff she's been on for years. But then the damn doc is sick, crazy or what? I

told her tonight that I was gonna turn him in. But I don't know what to do or

who to go to. Thank you for your prayers . I fight to not become addicted

Hi

Im not either, but I am a Nurse, let me ask- if this Doctor a Hospice Doc?

In that I mean it seems his focus is on total comfort for your mom, I dont know

her details, but what you have listed would put anyone out. Again, I dont

know what is going on, but I used to work for Hospice and unless someone was

dying from some painful cancer, and had a lot of anxiety - that seems to be an

awful lot of pain meds, anxiety meds, and the ambien? If her pain is under

control with all those meds, than why give her that?

I would go for a second opinion, and remember, just because he writes the order,

doent mean you have to give her all of that. Maybe hold the ambien and the

percocet until you get her awake and able to tell you what she would feel

comfortable with. Get a second opinion.

I think it's a little heavy, but only because of her symptoms. Different people

tolerate different doses, but if she's getting knocked out all day, I think

there's cause for concern. Those medicines cause respiratory supression and all

combined together could make a dangerous mix, in an elderly person. What is the

dose of Ativan? Is the 20 mg Oxycontin vs Oxycodone? Is she only taking the

Ambien at night? Are you sure that she's taking the right amount of meds at the

proper times in the day? ---

I would worry less about the addiction at her age, and that is my personal not

professional opinion. In people with chronic pain, well most of us aren't going

to get any better. So addiction isn't really a problem. And addiction isn't

really an issue for people with pain, it IS for people who take it for euphoria.

DEPENDANCE is different and that's just your body becoming used to a medication

that can cause that. It is nothing for be ashamed of.

With your mom, most likely she's going to pass on before her pain goes away, so

I would not worry myself with addiction or dependance. I'm sure that's where her

doc is coming from. Have you considered the possibility that she WANTS to pass?

Perhaps she's spoken with her doc and off the record he's helping her. I know it

sounds bad, but it's still a possibility. Maybe she hopes to go in her sleep.

Something to think about.

While it is true that itching can be an ADVERSE effect of some drugs, it is a

perfectly normal and expected, though unpleasant side effect of narcotics.

the reason I asked about the generic Oxycontin was because someone mentioned

that they were given a generic form of it and it didn't work as well - my

pharmacy told me there wasn't a generic version, hence the reason I had to pay

over $150 for a 30 day supply. : ( Oh well, I was just curious.

Thanks everyone for your responses about the itching. If my itching was severe,

I would definitely think it was an allergic reaction and would stop taking it,

but it is mild and actually today is a little better. I did some research and

saw that mild itching is fairly common - I just wanted to know from some of you

folks if it does subside with time. Benadryl is a good suggestion but I already

feel pretty loopy and that would probably put me over the edge to sleepytown. :

)

As far as my dosage, from what the doc told me & from the bottle - I was

prescribed 30 mg three times a day, so I space it out about 8 hours, not 12 -

maybe 12 hours for a different strength than what I have? Or maybe because of

the severity of my pain he wanted me to take it every 8 hrs vs. 12?

Thanks everyone.

I would definitely check with your pharmacist about taking it every 8 hours. It

is not meant to be taken that often. It lasts for 12 hours, no less. If you

still have pain then I would suggest that you talk about incresing your dose and

keeping it only twice a  day. Read about the med online and read your package

insert.  -- in RI

Jenn,

There was a generic oxycontin...but there was a law suit between purdue

pharma and the generic maker they won the law suit and the generic had to be

pulled of the market....there are other long acting drugs that are much

cheaper on the market. Morphine long acting generic is cheap..the cheapest

of all the long acting drugs would be methadone.....the itching will subside

with time....normal of all opiates....the most common

I definitely want to do what I'm supposed to do, but I trust this doc

wholeheartedly - he has been my doc for many years and is also an

anesthesiologist, so he knows his meds. Even good docs make mistakes though, so

I called the pharmacist just now and she said she has seen docs prescribe it to

be taken every 8 hours, although not as often... she said it's really up to the

doc. she said 12 is certainly the norm, like you said. She said to check with

my doc tomorrow morning, which I will.

I take 10 mg percocet every 6 hrs as needed as well for breakthrough pain. This

combination does help. This is really just a temporary thing - I am having a

fusion on April 24th so hopefully I will not need such strong meds later on this

year! : )

Thanks.

Hi ,

I believe it was I who started the thread about the effectiveness of the generic

oxycontin last week so I thought I'd check back in after mentioning this to my

doctors. There are a few companies out there who do put out a generic form of

time released oxycodone in addition to the company that markets the non-generic

oxycontin. This can be found on the web. Prior to my surgery I was given the

generic 10mg. strength for pain management. One month the pharmacy was running

low on their stocks and they had to fill it with medication from three different

manufactures. I did notice a slight difference at that time, one of the generic

brands seemed to be a bit more effective than the other two, not by much but

when you are in pain every little bit of relief is welcomed.

My Ortho doctors are not pain specialists so they could only give what advise

they could. They did write the new prescription for name brand only thinking

that it may be do to everyone's digestive system being different and that for

some reason my system may not be absorbing the generic form quite as well as the

name brand. I'll fill the new script when it's time at the end of the week so I

hope to get a little better relief. I'm sure hoping that this will be the last

time I'll need to take something this strong for pain.

I do realize the huge cost savings that the generics offer. In 2001, right after

my 3rd laminectomy/discectomy I lost my insurance coverage and there was no way

I could afford the oxycontin (it was right before the generic oxycontin was

first released) The pain specialist I was seeing placed me on medium dose

methadone which is very inexpensive when compared with all of the other pain

management medications and I found it the most effective medication for pain by

far but as I healed and it was time to discontinue taking it, methadone is by

far the hardest to come off of.

Also, I thought I might mention that Benadryl works pretty well for reducing the

itching caused by the oxycodone. It also helps increase the medication's

effectiveness, especially at bed time.

With best regards,

Calvin

Thank you for your opinion. She is no longer on the percocet and so far

she is staying awake and even walking around some. She is not dying of cancer or

anything but has had multiple spinal issues for years and had both hips replaced

in the last 3 yrs. She admitted to me that she really only needed 2-3 per day of

the oxycodene but that she MUST have the 20 mgs. They tried to reduce her to 10

mgs in the hospital and she had a fit. She is fighting us tooth and nail over

this medicine stuff and I realize she is heavily dependent on her meds but I am

so concerned about her having some kind of life left. She totally acts and talks

like a dope addict in the worst way. She cussed me out and acting freaky,

calling 911 while she was at the hospital saying they were stealing her medicine

and trying to kill her. You just wouldn't believe it. And imagine all that

coming from a 73 yr old woman. Now she has nearly a whole months worth of meds

extra cause she was in the hospital and they were giving it to her and I'm

afraid she may abuse with all the extras she has of it. I don't want to give up

on her but I really don't have much control with her fighting us. What should I

do? Should I turn that doctor in for overmedicating her? My sister went to this

doc with her and my sister said it was a joke. That the guy asked her " Bettye,

are you taking too much of your medication? And of course she said No and he

rewrote her prescriptions as normal. I was gonna go with her but she got my

other (quiet) sister to go with her while she knew I was having a medical

procedure done and couldn't be there. This is a normal pain doc not hospice.

There is no one dying here just living with severe DDD and neck and back pain.

What should I do?
