Hello -

I am a newbie here - I just started taking Lexapro today, for GAD. I had an

awful experience with Paxil, and weaned myself off about two years ago. My

therapist tells me that 9 out of 10 people do not have side effects with

Lexapro, so, I agreed to give it a try. The worst side effect I had was the

weight gain, and I notice on this list that some people have said Lexapro has

caused them to gain weight - which is unsettling to me - but, if I outgrow the

new jeans I bought today, I guess I will know...lol. I didn't even notice

the weight creeping on with Paxil.

I am encouraged by the positive things people are saying about Lexapro. I

am willing to give it a try. Life is too short to live it full of anxiety!

And, I know I do not need to explain to anyone here that this is not

something you can just " snap out of " . If it were that easy, we would all do it

-

without medication.

I'm on week four of Lexapro and I just upped my dose to 20mg today. No

problems so far. My doctor has also prescribed Ativan for me to take daily

and if I don't like it she'll switch me back to Xanax. I know people have

issues with benzos and their 'addiction' problems, but I truly believe these

drugs are life savers. I can do things I never could before, talkto

superiors, not freak out in traffic, not freak out period. As fas as the

addictions, isn't it the same with SSRI's? You have to wean yourself off of

them or you suffer withdrawl side effects. Seems to me that qualifies as

addiction anyday. I have felt better with Benzos than I have in years.

Oh, thanks, I understand now. Anxiety is the worst, even over depression. With

depression you just sleep!

I am currently on Paxil, but have been trying to wean off of it. It causes

weight gain and is not compatable with my Thyroid disorder. It has flouride in

it and suppresses the thyroid. With my current treatment for thyroid ('s

Syndrome) I am on Time Release T3 and it has helped the depression a lot, so

hoping I can get off or at least try something different. I was going to try

Lexapro, but now so many say it caused them weight gain. So not sure what to do.

Effexor XR kills your appetite. But I could not get my dose up fast enough

without seeing the doc again before I was crashing and forced to go back on

Paxil. This is all such a mess. I feel for all of you and me!!!!

Hi ,

Lexapro can cause weight gain, but it's not a certainty. It doesn't happen

to everyone and some even lose weight. It's luck of the draw and how the

makings of your personal body react with the drug. You could try it and see.

I think the key is to keep a regular exercise program and watch what you eat

70% of the time. I also read taking Omega 3 Fish Oils can help counteract

some of that weight gain.

yep anxiety is the worst. I am having a horrible day ..as I have GAD ,

panic disorder and agoraphobia..now depression seems to be setting in. I

have been on lexapro almost a year or something now.. but a very low dose

as I cannot seem to tolerate it ..makes my anxiety skyrocket. I have not

had weight gain though FYI. best of luck to you. - alison

THANKS ALLISON,

I STARTED OUT GOOD TODAY BUT AS THE DAY HAS GONE ON, SOME STRESSORS ARE CAUSING

ME ANXIETY TODAY. WHEN THIS HAPPENS I AM ALWAYS WONDERING IF IT IS NORMAL STRESS

FROM UPSETS AND THINGS GOING WRONG OR FROM CUTTING BACK ON THE PAXIL!

I WAS SO UPSET A WHILE AGO , I TOLD HUBBY I WAS SICK OF EVERYTHING, LIFE, MY

ILLNESSES AND BEING OVERWEIGHT. SOME DAYS I FEEL I AM READY FOR GASTRIC BYPASS.

BUT I DON'T THINK I QUALIFY FOR IT. NOT OVERWEIGHT ENOUGH. LOL

I DID TAKE 10 MG OF PAXIL TODAY, COULD BE IT IS JUST REALLY GOING OUT OF MY

SYSTEM NOW, ALTHOUGH I HAVE NOT BEEN TOTALLY OFF OF IT YET. I WANT TO FIND A

ANTI DEPRESSANT THAT CAUSES WEIGHT LOSS!!!!

NOT SHOUTING, JUST TOO TIRED A LAZY TO CHANGE THE FONT. EASIER FOR ME TO READ

TOO.

hang in there ,

I am here for you. I think some stress is normal..we live in a strssful

world. if you are paralyzed by it everyday ( as I generally am) then it

is a problem right? when you are weaning on or off an antideprressant I

think mood s and feelings are subject to being more dramatic. hang in . I

am not sure if there really are any antidpressants that cause weight

loss. reports differ on every single one. I have the same concern as you.

I am naturally a bit chubby and I am very concerned over weight gain

issues . keep on writing if it helps.

WELL, I READ THAT TOO AND I AM TAKING FLAX SEED OIL, TRYING TO GET REGULAR WITH

IT. IT IS FRUSTRATING BECAUSE I HAVE SO MANY HEALTH PROBLEMS THAT KEEP ME DOWN,

FYBRO , HYPOTHYROID (WILSON'S SYNDROME), ALLERGIES, SLEEP APNEA, PCOS,

MENAPAUSE, DEPRESSION, ANXIETY SOMETIMES,BAD BACK RIGHT NOW, THAT STAYING ON AN

EXERCISE PROGRAM AT AGE 50 HAS BEEN NEARLY IMPOSSIBLE FOR ME. WHEN I WAS ONLY

35-40 I USED THE NORDICK TRACK EVERY DAY FOR 45 MINUTES. I COULD NOT DO IT 1

MINUTE NOW. :o( LINDA

Hi -

Yes, that is what I have..constant anxiety, no panic attacks..just an

anxious feeling all the time. Not fun. But, my first two days on the Lexapro

have

not been that great...I have a headache, a bit of nausea, and I am tired!

I am leaving on vacation next week, a 1300 mile motorcycle trip (one way),

and I cannot afford to not be on top...so, I am wondering if I should wait

until I get back to start treatment. Maybe these side effects will be gone by

next week.

Hi -

I am 52 myself, so, I know somewhat what you are going through. I am in

good health, but, I take a lot of meds to stay that way! It was really hard

weaning off the paxil...I also gained a lot of weight on that med. I had a

hysterectomy in Oct., and since then, I have lost weight. So, I am wondering

if

it was pre menopause, rather than the paxil, causing the weight gain. Of

course, I will never know. But, my body seems to be finding its own place now,

which surprises me, because I thought I would gain weight during menopause,

be it surgical, or natural.

I have concerns about the Lexapro causing weight gain, but, my doctor

assures me that 9 out of 10 people do not have side effects with Lexapro. But,

I

am still wondering if I will stay on it or not...I don't like the headaches I

have had today!

Hi there,

motorcycle trip?! that sounds awesome. i love to ride. maybe it would

help you... BUT on the other hand it takes several weeks to a month to

get used to the sides and lex can make one sleepy so please observe how

you are feeling ( ie are you alert feeling ) before you decide for sure

to go on your excursion. _ alison

WELL , THAT IS GOOD NEWS FOR YOU MARYLIN, HOW DID YOU FINALLY GET OFF THE PAXIL?

I WOULD ALMOST WELCOME ANY SURGERY IF IT WOULD TAKE SOME WEIGHT OFF. I NEED TO

LOSE #50, BUT WOULD TAKE ANY AMMOUNT RIGHT NOW.

I can do things I never could before, talkto

addictions, isn't it the same with SSRI's? You have to wean yourself off of

them or you suffer withdrawl side effects. Seems to me that qualifies as

addiction anyday. I have felt better with Benzos than I have in years.

Hi -

I weaned myself slowly off the paxil, by cutting just a teensy bit off my

pill every week or so. I mean, just a few little grains. A teensy, tiny

bit....it took about 3 months, at least. I had minimal side effects this way.

It

still was no picnic. That is why I am still a bit anxious about another

medication...I keep thinking, maybe I can handle this on my own. I really

don't

know, at this point, which road to take.

alison here. I just noticed this mail. sorry it took me till today to

respond. Are you feelign any better today? I know what you mean abotu the

health things. I am suffering IBS and back problems and now a possible

slipped disk in my neck that keeps me up all night long. plus I am on

antibiotics for an ear infection. I know how you feel as much as I can

not being ytou. it is really gettign me down. Iam only 35 and should not

be having all these probelms. ( I mean the health things alongside 3

panic dissorders and depression) it is a lot to take. HAng in there. I am

here for you. I dunno if you can e-mail me direct but you are welcome to.

YEP and the pay pal I had an issue with them as well. I got ripped off on

ebay and NO ONE would help..not pay pal.. not ebay and not my credit card

company. I was VERY upset as I am on a fixed income ( disability) and

every penny counts. sometimes it is best to cut your losses and move

on..cause i knwo that dealign with that whole mess gave me so so much

anxiety. I am better now that I tried to do somethign about it but found

I couldn't ..so I am tryign to forget it.. it is easier. I mena unless

you are talking a whole lot of $ . in that case there must be some action

you can take.

So linda ..do you think the lex is helping at all. I really do not feel

it is helping me.. in fact I have as much anxiety as ever. the depression

came after I started the meds. now I seem to be having memory and

confusion problems.. I am not sure if it is the meds or my anxiety or

both.

anyway you are not alone OK? remeber that. I for one am here and wioll

always lend an ear ( or e-mail eye)
