Guest guest
Kathy,The problem is that it is still spinal fusion, it is still metal and really although the instrumentation has changed, the concept hasn't changed much from the initially surgeries 50 years ago. We are still at risk for fusion failure, complications, poor surgical outcomes and chronic pain. There is no long term follow-up done on us and Lord help us if the surgeon is sub-standard. There is no malpractice and we are left to suffer with more invasive surgery. I really am concerned for you Kathy and I do understand. I too had complications from my first surgery, which lead to a second, and a third surgery, now I need a fourth in my mid 30s! If you need to vent, shout or scream, I am always here! Just send me an email! You have every right to feel the way you do and every right to expect good surgical outcomes just like anyone else! , sometimes I wonder, if our social health care is worth the cost both in taxes we pay and in the quality of medical professionals we have in Ontario. We really are at their mercy! So sorry for you both! From: KATHYINBK <kathyinbk@...> Sent: Wed, August 4, 2010 1:33:22 AMSubject: [ ] Lab rats? Hi Maggie - Good question...I wish I had an answer. Ya know...I can understand how the docs 20-30 years ago just didn't know any better. When I had my broken Harrington removed in 1981, I knew that the technology would have to improve before I would agree to have another surgery. So I waited 27 years for technology to catch up. I seriously have scrambled my brains over the past 3 years wondering "how in the hell did this happen"?! All this modern hardware & modern techniques that are supposed to eliminate the complication of flatback & it is still happening. My doc was in complete denial !!! He blamed it on my spine...not his poor surgical technique. Like I've said before...I feel like I could be the poster child for what can happen when you pick an unqualified ortho surgeon. I really feel for . He is the first one I've heard from that has a similar story to mine. .............................Kathy
