Hey !

Welcome =) AND Merry Christmas!!!

We casted our lil one at 9 months old. It wasnt until the 3rd cast that we could tell (without xrays) that our little one was really close to straight! So hang in there. We are going into our 6th cast right after christmas. We go to Shriners in SC. Logan is looking fantastic...we still have a smidge left on rotation. Who knows how many more Logan will have. We are hoping for April to be our end. That will make it 1 year of casting for us...but we take the info we are given at each visit and think positive. As long as he is improving we will take it. We are just trying our best to avoid surgery if possible. Good luck to you and your little one and hang in there!

Logan's mama (45 down to 0 in cast. Have no idea what out of cast numbers are...but he looks straighter than me! lol! )

Hi all! I'm from Northern Virginia. My "almost one-year-old" son, (or Jack), has infantile scoliosis.Jack was diagnosed with idiopathic infantile scoliosis at about 7 months of age. At our first appointment with the pediatric orthopedic surgeon, we learned Jack had a 36 degree curve, and the doctor recommended we go ahead and schedule a Risser casting immediately. Jack just completed his 6 weeks of casting, and had his cast taken off on Monday, 12/20. I had high hopes that the casting would provide the ideal results, and that Jack would only have to have two or three casts before having to wear a brace, but the results from his x-ray after the cast was taken off say otherwise. His curve had only improved by about 2 degrees.I realized that I have a handful of expectations that are probably too high, and even more unanswered questions about this whole process. I'm hoping to get a more realistic sense of

what I should expect during Jack's course of treatment.I'm excited to get to know all of you, learn of your experiences with your own children and scoliosis, and hopefully provide you with advice and support as well.

Yep--they do mehta casting at SC but they call them Risser casts. But Dr P was trained by Dr Mehta herself....

That may be a scenario that you encounter...we questioned it too...why call it something else if it really is Mehta...

Dr P said that is what the US insurance companies refer to it as, but what we do is not a risser cast.

I think the closest doctors to you that do Mehta casting as Greenville SC and Pennsylvania. Most parents have to travel outside their city and even state to find a properly trained doctor. Good luck finding a doctor and getting casted.JenMommy to Cole> >> > ,> > > > I know it's hard when you're filled with so much hope but hang in there. > > Everyone has a different experience with casting and the results every cast > > change but you started at a young age so that is great and gives you a better > > chance. • 2 weeks later...

Hi ,

Welcome to CAST. Im sure you have already gotten great advice from the

group already, but i wanted to recommend a couple of things; Pls read

" Growth as a corrective force in the early treatment of progressive

infantile scoliosis, " by Mehta and let us know if you have any questions.

I would also view " A New Direction, " DVD, if possible.

Early Treatment w/ EDF casting & Mehtas Method is very specialized form of

casting that requires a 3-D cast frame, proper materials & cut outs,

etc....

I have been in the OR for at least 25 EDF cast applications and can cover

a lot more ground over the phone if you want to talk. (303) 507 2485 MTN

time.

Sincerely,

HRH
