Guest guest
Jo, Try pepsid 4 ( 10mg ) chewable tablets (over the counter) when you have reflux, but only once a day.. You are advised by the pharmacy to take 1 Pepsid but my gi told me to try 4 chewable 10mg tabs and also the procardia and it works like a charm for reflux and spasms. Your spasms should go away completely in time and the same with any feeling of reflux. A speedy recovery to you. I am 10 months post op and doing great. Guest guest
Thanks Debbi! I'm post-op day 5 and I'm doing pretty well as far as swallowing. I am having episodes of reflux and spasms that I am trying to contend with and haven't quite got that under control, so any advice everyone (thanks Bobbie!) would be appreciated. I am going to try the Pepcid recipe next, if this Zantac recipe doesn't work. I can relate to some of the post-ops disbelief that people have had. I had a sandwich today (peanut butter and jelly) for the first time in 8 months, with one sip of water. I must have chewed a thousand times before I would swallow. My husband is trying to convince me to eat different soft foods but--did anyone experience this?--I'm so HESITANT to try. I know it will get better, I think I'm just expecting too much at once. Did anyone experience post op depression? I think more like a continuation of the previous depression? I'm not sure if that is what I'm going through. More than anything, I'm very glad I had this done--maybe I'm just SO ANXIOUS to be semi normal again. The baby is doing fine! Guest guest
Great to hear you are coping so well Jo! Keep it up! Of course post-op depression is real. You have been through major stress, an anaesthetic and surgery - all of which will knock you around a bit. It is natural to be hesitant to eat, after all you don't want to risk bringing it up and you don't want to discover that you can't !. The fact that you can you will have to prove to yourself over time. Remember also that your insides are still tender - a bit raw in fact and your body is telling you to go easy. I certainly could not bear anything that was remotely lumpy or course so even the oats porridge had to be sieved and that's such a mission! All that will pass as you heal. Be kind to yourself and eat what you feel comfortable with, but now and then humour your hubby and try something he suggests and you will be surprised. It is not so much what you eat but its texture that bothered me. I also could not eat anything that was acidic so fruit juice and raw fruit smoothies were out. You are doing great Jo - were rooting for you ! Hugs, Joan Johannesburg South Africajpearse@... Re: I'm back! Thanks Debbi! I'm post-op day 5 and I'm doing pretty well as far as swallowing. Tomorrow is my first post op visit and I have a lot of questions for my surgeon so I will update everyone when I get back. It sure helps when a group validates what a person can be going through. Guest guest
Hi ... Glad things seem to be going well. As far as I know, you're right to be concerned about anti-inflammatories. Which one did they prescribe? There are lots of studies that show the NSAIDS have an effect on fusion. Here's the abstract of one that's easy to understand: Spine. 1998 Apr 1;23(7):834-8. Related Articles, Links The effect of postoperative nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug administration on spinal fusion. Glassman SD, Rose SM, Dimar JR, Puno RM, MJ, JR. Department of Orthopaedic Surgery, University of Louisville School of Medicine, Kentucky, USA. STUDY DESIGN: The influence of ketorolac on spinal fusion was studied in a retrospective review of 288 patients who underwent an instrumented spinal fusion. OBJECTIVE: To assess the effect of postoperative ketorolac administration on subsequent fusion rates. SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA: Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs are widely used compounds, which are known to inhibit osteogenic activity and have been shown to decrease spinal fusion in an animal model. No previous studies have examined the influence of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs on spinal fusion in clinical practice. METHODS: The medical records of 288 patients who underwent instrumented spinal fusion from L4 to the sacrum between 1991 and 1993 were reviewed retrospectively. The 121 patients who received no nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs were compared with the 167 patients who received ketorolac after surgery. The groups were demographically equivalent. RESULTS: Ketorolac had a significant adverse effect on fusion, with five nonunions in the nondrug group and 29 nonunions in the ketorolac group (P > 0.001). Ketorolac administration also significantly decreased the fusion rate for subgroups including men, women, smokers, and nonsmokers. The odds ratio demonstrated that nonunion was approximately five times more likely after ketorolac administration. Cigarette smoking also decreased the fusion rate (P > 0.01); smokers were 2.8 times more likely to develop nonunion. CONCLUSION: These data suggest that nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs significantly inhibit spinal fusion at doses typically used for postoperative pain control. The authors recommend that these drugs be avoided in the early postoperative period. PMID: 9563116 [PubMed - indexed for MEDLINE] Regards, > > Only thing I'm no understanding is that the doctor put me on an anti-inflammatory and I know I've heard that that can affect fusion but I asked them about that and they said there is no evidence that they have found about that. Guest guest
Hi Tawny, Good to hear from you again, but I'm sorry you're in so much pain. I hope the MTX and Humira get you back on your feet again. I'm going to call my rheumy to see if I can get in to see her soon, but first have to wait and see what the surgeon says about my jaw because I understnad you can't have surgery and be on mtx or Remicade. Guest guest
Tawny, Do you know what the cause of the coughing is? Do you have bronchitis? Does your doctor know about this coughing? I¹m not sure it¹s a good idea to start mtx if you are having lung problems. Please let your doctor know about it. I¹m glad to see you back and hope you feel better soon. a > > I have missed everyone so much, so glad to be back!!! I'm having a > tough time right now, it seems like I'm just falling apart. Guest guest
a,....I haven't told the doctor about the lung problem, I was hoping it would go away. I can't afford to go to the doctor right now. Their going by my lab work when I was in the hospital, and the liver was in good shape. So, that was the problem before with the MTX. I know that it is risky to take the MTX, I'm still taking the Humira also, but I don't know what to do. I can't walk anymore. The left leg is like a piece of meat on my body, that feels alien, hard to explain. I'm having so much pain everywhere, I just can't hardly take care of myself right now, and that scares me. So, I'm just thinking of that, because I have no one to take care of me, but me. I will be careful, and if any further complications I will talk to the doctor, or go to the emergency. I'm just to the point I don't know what to do. I can't deal with this much longer, and with no insurance, well it's tough. So, I can only do so much to try to help myself stay mobile, and hope for the best. I will be careful, promise T > Tawny, > Do you know what the cause of the coughing is? Guest guest
YIKES! Now I'm feeling a lot better -- and sure relieved that I didn't have to spend $6,000 to get my water back. The guy did check the water level in our well. He said it was good. But then we live near a river. If our well had gone dry, I'm sure the river would be significantly lower also. In September I was diagnosed with biliary dyskensia and cholecystitis (low functioning gallbladder with chronic inflamation) and have had it removed. My pain was unreal with my gallbladder attacks... pain lasting 8 hours that sent me to the hospital. I'm a million times better now! Talk about bad luck with 2 diseases diagnosed months apart! And from the physicians I've talked to NONE of them say its related. Really interesting though... slow "e", slow gallbladder..hmmmm?!?!I plan to do surgery when I start to have dysphagia again, hopefully the dilation can hold out for some time since my abdomen is still healing from my lap chole.ANyways, nice to be back and I look fwd to chating again! from MI Autos.
