Guest guest
I was diagnosed with asthma when I was 17 years old (1981???). They gave me Ventolin pills!!! What were they thinking!! I was in the middle of writing exams, and I had to have a note from my doctor because my hands (and whole body) where shaking so bad I could barely hold a pen! Back in those days you were also give MEGA does of Theophylline. My dr. put me on 300mg of Theo just last year (and it does seem to helping somewhat....I guess...), but I believe the dosage back then was like 2400mg a day or something equally ridiculous! Thanks to Xolair I have gotten through a summer without prednisone, but my bad time is September to November (ragweed)....I will let you know how it goes! Guest guest
I had ventolin and theophylline as well - same time period. I weighed about 95 lbs - 15/16 years old. The side effects got so bad I just stopped taking them - I felt like I couldn't get well b/c the side effects were weighing me down (no pun intended). No one checked my blood levels or anything. Still here. Haven't had either ventolin pills or theophylline since. Addy Make sure to discuss any changes in your treatment plan with your doctor, esp if you are an underweight, stubborn 15 year old. > > I was diagnosed with asthma when I was 17 years old (1981???). Guest guest
Hi Addy I did have my blood levels checked periodically back then! My doctor checks my theophylline levels every 3 months now, and they are in the very low end of acceptable levels....I really don't know if if is helping me much, but it might be giving me a little boost that I need with all the other meds. Guest guest
ahhh, back in the 80's....theo was the miracle drug...or so they thought. i remember being 7 years old, and taking 750 mg of quibron, three times a day! nasty horrid yellow horsepills. i remember at 10 years old, my mom asked the dr if the quibron could have anything to do with my insomnia. he said NO!!!! theo has NO side effects! big ol' liar he was, mamma looked it up in the PDR....but the dr maintained that it was not connected. ARGH! (i no longer see that dr!) i also had ventolin and beclovent inhalers.....and the faithful atarax for itching...and the pred....can't forget the once a month, 2 week taper of pred. ironically, there is speculation that my sleep issues now are due to the theo back then. the theory is (and i have no idea if it holds any water -- it was just a random thought thrown out by two of my drs) that back then, the theo " helped " establish my sleep pattern (which wasn't much). now, i'm just in that same groove. who knows. interesting....thank goodness xolair came through. i wonder what it will be like in 20 years!? heather pjboucher2001 <pjboucher2001@...> wrote: Hi Addy I did have my blood levels checked periodically back then! Guest guest
Oh, freak, I have sleep issues also. The thought that the theophylline might have something to do with it never occured to me. Also I have a need to eat carbs when I wake up. I wonder if that was once related to the side effects of theo and it just became a pattern. I had ventolin and beclovent inhalers too. Guest guest
I was also prescribed " back then " the becloforte inhaler (which was just a stronger dose than the beclovent). I took 16 puffs a day of that nasty thing! Hence the short track to osteopenia! On the sleep issue side, when I was last on pred, my doctor prescribed Immovane (don't know the generic name and I am in Canada), for when I was on the larger doses, which zonked me out for the night. Just recently she has put me on 20mg a day of Amitripityline(sp?) which is an anti-depressant. I take it before I go to bed. Usually I wake up about 6-8 times per night, and one of those times I would be up for an hour or so....since she prescribed this 2 weeks ago, I have been able to get back to sleep right away! Last night I actually slept for 6.5 hours in a row!!! WOW!!!! Pamela > > Oh, freak, I have sleep issues also.
