Guest guest
I had a revision one year after my MGB. It was worth it to me. I had another 80 lbs to lose. But I only had a 2 ft bypass the first time because of liver disease Dr. R found when he did the surgery. SO I had lost 70 lbs. It cost the same $17,000. I didnt have shoulder pain the first time from the anathesia, but did on the revision. I didnt have my stomach touched, but had to follow the same post surgery as everyone else. I was hungry, that was different, but I was also losing weight again and it made it okay. I think the over-all recovery was pretty easy once all was said and done. I did have a complication after the revision and that was the gastric artery was nicked when inserting the instruments and they had to spend time fixing that little detail. SO I had a side ache for a while. I would have done it again if I had to make that choice again. Good luck with your decision. Guest guest
Hi Ann. I just had a revision on Dec 5th in Las Vegas with Dr. R. I had my original surgery in 2002 240 lb pre-op and 155 lbs post-op. I too gained about 25 lbs back before deciding for revision. Here's what I had to do: 1) Talk to Dr. R. (give him a call) to qualify. 2) submit an application online -specify revision. 3) Insurance most likely will not cover this surgery because you are no longer morbidly obese but Dr. R can explain more 4) Costs are slightly reduced - I think $14,000 versus $18,000 if paying wiht cash. 5) I did not have to re-do the whole pre-op process (the workbook thing) but it helps to have one because you do have to do pre-op paperwork the night before surgery based on the application - it helps to have your old one. 5) The surgery is the same as the first time - you get five new little cuts. 6) I have not experienced drastic weight loss like in the first surgery but I have had some. Time will tell. Hope this helps. - Carin --- firewoman74403 <jakinser@...> wrote: > I am curious about a revision. I've gained 20# back. > At 5'4 " I now > weigh 185. Guest guest
Yep, you also need to get the pre-op blood work up done. But I had my revision in 2005, lost another 70 lbs. But mine cost exactly what I paid for the first time around. $17,000 cash. Insurance didnt pay either time. I am very glad that I did have the revision though. The weight drop was not drastic, but steady. Anne H. 312-230 first time with a 2 ft. bypass 230-150 with a 7 ft bypass > > > I am curious about a revision. Guest guest
, I just had a revision 4 weeks ago, and everything went as well & as smoothly as my original MGB was 10 years ago.? I had originally lost 150 pounds, but had put 50 pounds back on.? It seems that back in the early days of Dr R's MGB, he was 'cautious' and only bypassed 4 feet.? This time, he bypassed an additional 6 feet (total of 10 between the two procedures).? I've lost over 25 pounds at this point (post revision), feel terrific, the clothes are falling off me, and it appears to be a success.? I'm very glad both for the original MGB and for the revision ... and would do both again in a minute. Any questions, please email me privately. Regards, revision Hello, I would love to hear from anyone who has had a revision. I just started my paperwork. I am trying to get rid of the last 80 lbs. I had my MGB in Sept. 2006 and lost just over 100lbs. I am so glad I had the MGB and obviously would do it again in a heartbeat. My husband had MGB sugery last June and has lost 140 lbs and has reached his goal. Again, anyone who has had their surgery revised, I would love to hear from. from Canada

At my revision my weight was 174lbs. I'm down to 135lbs now, obviously the weight has come off slowly for me. My goal weight is 110 so I'm within 15 pounds of my goal weight. My weight at my original MGB 2years ago was 210 lbs with a high weight of 225. I've had no problems since my surgery, just the idiosyncracies of living with an MGB re routed gut. It seems to be a daily learning process, of what I can handle and what I cant. Good luck. Sue
Guest guest
You sound like you're doing great! Congratulations! I would worry that after a revision I would lose too much weight. Guest guest
Hi Mike,  Glad to hear you've had success with your revision. I had my MGB in 2003 and in the past year I've gained back 20 lbs. I attribute the gain to dietary indiscretion, age, and returning to work thus becoming more sedentary and some stress eating. I am possibly interested in a revision, have been in touch w/ CLOS, but would like to ask you a couple of questions if you don't mind. 1.) Did you consider going to the CLOS center in Florida instead of Las Vegas since I see you are from the east coast--if so why did you choose to go to Las Vegas--for Dr. Rutledge? Dr Rutledge did my surgery in Statesville, interestingly, I used to be a nurse at Regional Surgical Associates where Dr. Rutledge was located when in Durham, NC.(When I was there his staff people were and Dianne)  2.) What was the cost and the time you spent in the hospital?  Was the post op period similar to the first procedure? Is the revision basically an additional amt. of intestine bypass AND an additional reduction of the size of the stomach pouch? THE COST FOR A REVISION IN LAS VEGAS IS $14,000. IT IS A 24 HOUR STAY IN THE HOSPITAL. THE STOMACH REDUCTION AND BYPASS DEPENDS ON WHAT OUT COME YOU ARE LOOKING FOR, YOUR AGE, HEALTH AND MGB HISTORY, THE DOCTOR WILL DISCUSS THE OPTIONS THIS WITH YOU.  Any insight you can give me would be helpful--Thanks in advance Sincerely, Tilley alligray2001@... From: <MikeNJ1109@...> Subject: Revision Date: Friday, November 14, 2008, 2:52 PM Hi everyone, and especially to Dr. R and the CLOS / Las Vegas Staff if you're reading.... I am here mostly as a lurker, but do post from time to time ... and wanted to just share how things are going here ... By way of background, I had my original MGB with Dr. R back in July of 1999 ( if memory serves, I was Dr. R's 150th or so patient). At that time, I was well over 365, had type 2 / adult onset diabetes, swollen joints, apnea, possibly every item in the book, and am amazed to this day that I was still alive. Dr. R and the surgery literally saved my life, and I went to @ 215 lbs in about 6 months (by the end of '99). It was at this point that I began to stabalize ... no loss of weight, but no gain either. And as you might guess, I began to gain weight...slowly to be sure, but still gained, to the point where early this year (2008) I was up to 267. Well, the decision then was obvious ... I needed a " jump-start " to get myself motivated again, and I arranged to have Dr. Rutledge do a Revision. I had the procedure done on April 23rd '08, and according to Dr. R, he took about 75 minutes or so inside --- since I was one of his " early " patients back in '99, he wanted to do a thorough search to see how his " handiwork " was holding up. When I got out of recovery, he came to visit and advised that I was in " GREAT " shape ... back in '99, my liver was showing all the signs of " Fatty Liver Syndrome " , but during the Revision he checked the liver, and it looked as healthy and normal as could possibly be. I am off all cholesteral medication ... for the first time in years, it seems ... and the results of my recent blood work (about a month ago) show totally normal cholesteral numbers. My blood glucose numbers are all VERY normal, and have NOT been on any diabetes medication since April '99. Overall, things are great. Oh ... I forgot ... my weight is now at 199, which marks the first time since my freshman year of college that I have been under 200 lbs. My insurance agent is even recommending that I be " re-evaluated " by my life insurance carrier to see if I can be " upgraded " to a better rating category. Obviously, based on my past history, I'm paying a small fortune for my policy ... if under the circumstances (my better health and medical situation overall) they are willing to give me a better rate, that can only be a good thing. Any way, and so it goes ... hope everyone is having a great day. Best regards,
Guest guest
Carolyn, Wow another Texas Gal! Welcome to the group, sorry you find a need to be among us, but we are glad to be of help. The doc spoken about most here in Texas is in Amarillo, and since I'm not in your state, and haven't been there, I don't know how far away he is from Houston, but Southwest flies into Amarillo, always deals from Denver to there( close to me) so maybe there will be from Houston too. Dr. La Grone 13 Medical Drive Amarillo TX 79106 806-354-2529 www.scoliosismd.com Dr. LaGrone has many patients here, hopefully some will chime in. If you go to the site, click on Messages, and there at the top will be a SEARCH box, type in LaGrone, and up will pop messages concerning him from the past, but be prepared there will be many. It's always wise to get two or three opinions if possible, as this is a big surgery, and only should be left in very experienced hands. As to the pain of revision, pain is something that only who's experiencing it can judge, some may say revision was very painful, but I think most would say it wasn't as bad as the original Harrington Rod surgery. Mine sure wasn't. Pain control is far better, than in 73 when I had my Harrington placed, that was awful waiting, and waiting for the nurse to come and give me the shot, in agony till she showed up. Pain mgt in the hospital is far better, with pumps for the first days, so for me, it wasn't as bad as I thought, or had run it up in my head. This is a big and painful surgery, believe me it's no walk in the park, but most doc's and hospitals will work very hard to get you as comfortable as possible. Many with our condition have to travel to get to an experienced doc for an opinion, so if you are looking for an opinion outside your state, let us know, and we will give you some more names. I'd start with LaGrone if it were me, he's experienced, and has a good rep, and patients here to speak with. We have had gals who have seen Hanson, hopefully they will chime in, but to my knowledge no one here has had surgery with him. I wish you much luck in the doctor quest, it's a big step in finding your way through the Flatback journey. We look forward to hearing more from you! Colorado Springs CO [ ] Revision Hi...I'm new to this group and am interested in y'all's advice.I live in the Houston area and had the Harrington Rod surgery in1981 at the age of 35. Obviously, that makes me 63 and I have recently been diagnosed with flatback. The surgery done in 1981 was by Dr. Wendell Erwin of Scoliosis Associates. The correction was good.Don't remember degrees. Now, I have been to Dr Hanson who was affiliated with dr.s of that group. I'm having a ct/myleogram tomorrow. So far, he has told me about the surgery and it sounds like the pain after it will be worse than the original in 1981. I read on a forum (that I can't seem to get back to!) that there is a excellent surgeon in West Texas that many have been to, liked and even had surgery there. Does anyone know of this dr? I think I might remember his name if I see it. I believe a second opinionj is indicated here! Thanks in advance,Carolyn
Guest guest
Carolyn, LaGrone did my revision 2 years ago this month. I live in Dallas so it was only an hour trip by plane to Amarillo. Guest guest
Hello Caroline, I think I was seen once by Dr. Erwin. I did see Dr. Hanson about three? years ago. I know one person who had surgery with Dr. Hanson and was pleased. I think the doctor you are thinking about is Dr. Lagone in Amarillo. I had scoliosis surgery in 1967. I have not had revision surgery. If you are having the ct/mylegram at Methodist it should go well. They are good at it. Guest guest
Hi - lots of people have gone from one procedure to another - band to bypass, bypass to band, band to sleeve, sleeve to DS, bypass to DS, etc. all WLs procedures require the same hard work from us, and all have great successes and others who don't do well. Going from onepropcedure to anothert is not a solution, unless there have been physial problems with one procedure and there is no chopice but to have another procedure. We have several people here who have a band over an old bypass, and i hope they will share their experences. However, those who went from a band to a bypass are not likely to be active on a band site like this any longer. the Vertical Gastric Sleeve is also a very good procesure for some bandsters who need a revision. Do a lot of homework, and talk to several surgeons- never go just by what you read from other patients. consider all options, including keeping the procedure you have and learing jut what it needs. you'll find a LOT of good info about revisions on the Obesity Help revision forum. http://www.obesityhelp.com/forums/revision/ but do remember, EVERYone loves their procedure and their surrgeon for about the first year. look for those who have been out at least 2-5 years to hear the real story. even then, those who have done poorly will not be active on any board, and will not repond at all. sandy r > > Just wondering if their is anyone out in bandster land that has had a revision from the band to Gastric Bypass or one who has the Bypass that has been banded if so I would like to hear your story and why you made that choice? thanks >
