Beth,

Of course you should always call to check these things out with the

" pros " ....but my experience was pretty identical to yours, except that my period

began 2 day after surgery, and my ICU nurses were male....fun! And then it

started up 2 weeks later and so on and so forth for a long while. I cant

remember when things evened out again, although looking back from this vantage

point I believe this was the first sign the menopause was right around the

corner.

A number of other members have also had this experience, and they may have

better memories than me (after all...I am in the midst of the meno-memoryless

years!) but I think the trauma of surgery and/meds brings on the crazy cycles.

Probably just a body's way of making sure it doesnt get overloaded with a

pregnancy while recuperating and not able to handle it. Or maybe its related to

other surgical trauma like blood loss or transfusions.

And you thought we were kidding when we said that pre-op preparations include

supplies in a readily available place for ones period huh?!!!

Hope you dont have to endure a trip to the gyno just now.

Take Care, Cam

Hi Beth,

My period definitely got out-of-wack during surgery and afterwards. It took

about 3 months before it came back to its pre-surgery regularity. (I'm about 4mo

post op now)

>

> Before the surgery I would have considered myself " regular " getting my period

approximately every 28-30 days. I got my period five days before surgery (4/17,

4/21) so I thought I was set for a month and would be home again before I needed

to deal with that again. Well, two weeks later (5/1) I got it again in rehab.

Now yesterday (5/19) I got it again. I did a search and found out that some

women got their period early a day or two after the surgery or missed several

months, but I didn't see my situation come up. Of course, I've left a message

with Dr. Rand's surgical coordinator, but I thought I'd ask the group also.

Especially after getting a drumming for taking so many car rides my first few

days home, I'm not exactly looking forward to a 30 minute car ride each way to

visit my OBGYN and especially not having to maneuver myself onto the reclining

examination table!

I think it's actually the rare person whose periods don't get irregular after a

major surgery. I had it all planned out so that my surgery was right after the

end of my period so that I'd have 4 weeks before having to worry about it again.

So much for those plans... I got my period on post-op day 3. Then it took

several months to get regulated.

The bottom line is that I wouldn't worry about it.

After both surgeries, my period came early - and during the post-op hospital

stay. After my first surgery, it got so wacky I ended up going on the pill to

regulate it. I think the stress of the surgery must do something to trigger it.

Beth,

I started my period 2 days after my revision surgery. I also remember starting my period a few days after my first surgery. No fun. My doctor told me it was due to the trauma your body is put through. After that, I was regular again. Melinda

Beth,

I've had three revision surgeries, got my period unexpectedly after each( no where near time) about a day after. After that I was out of whack( and I could set my watch to when my period would hit I was that regular), and didn't return to normal for months. I also believe that my last revision set me into peri menopause with gusto, hot flashes, night sweats, and my sleep pattern was nuts. I was 40 to 42 during this time frame.

Also know if you have a big weight loss after surgery( I lost about 30 pounds due to nausea fro the meds), it can stop your period for awhile, took 6 months for mine to come back. Most of this will be temporary, but check with your doc to be sure in your case.

Thank you to all who responded. The surgeon's coordinator hasn't returned my

call yet, but after all of your responses I feel comfortable in " going with the

flow " for now.

Hang in there, girls! There will be a day when you are free from these problems. That day is called "old age"! What a wonderful perk among all the physical aches and pains! I'm so glad I don't have to worry about that for my upcoming surgery!
