Guest guest
hello : My name is Mike i live on cape cod.i had open surgery 3 years ago,it toke me almost a year to get back to normal.the procedure was done at BRIGHAMS & WOMEN'S in boston by dr.ulonda colson.they also did a key hole procedure because they had to cut my spinktor at the top and reattached it.they took some off the spinktor because it wouldn,t open enough.i had 3 ballon treatments before the operation and they stopped working.I had the j tube for 3 month,s.it is worth it all to be able to eat like a normal person again.i had a very rare case they said because i also have GERD.i feel as though i no you because your operation was discussed so much on this site.wishing you a very speedy recovery.Pippa <kevin.brown150@...> wrote: I will help you all I can, Just ask all the questions you want I was in the same boat as you a couple of months ago and if it wasn't for , Ann, and I don't know what I would have done. How old is your son and where is he having his surgery? Why is he havng open surgery and not key hole?I had eating problems for about two years and finally went to the doctors who diagnosed an ulcer and acid reflux I was put on ant acid tablets which helped but not completly and still felt the food was getting stuck and I was trying to take deep breaths to push the food downI was sent to a consultant in july who sent me for an endoscopy who diagnosed Achalasia and sent me for a barium x-ray and was told it was a Hiatus hernia was referred to a surgeon who discussed an open hernia operation but sent me for a CT scan first which came back as Achalasia.Went for a pre assesment before surgery and was told it would be done by key hole but the day before surgery the anesatist came to see me and told me that i was having open surgery. So as you can see I have been through the mill a bit in the past few months.I must say it has been a big shock to go through open surgery if I had been given more notice I may have handled it better.I woke up with an oxygen mask, nasel tube, cathater, IV drips, epidural and a drain in my abdomen not to mention a 5-6 inch incision starting just below the navel and up to my breast bone. The hardest thing at the momnet is that the scare is very tight and I cant stand up straight which is giving me backache, and I can just about manage to hold a cup of tea or a small bowl of food. Guest guest
Tonia, I echo Pippa in saying I'll be thinking of you and next week! I'm hoping this surgery works for him for a LONG, LONG time!! Please keep us posted as soon as you can on how things are going! Relating the details of your experiences can help many of us, including myself if decided to have surgery by Dr. Rice. Wishing you, and your family all the best! in Michigan P.S.: Where are you staying in Cleveland? The Guest House is closest, but maybe not as comfy as some other hotels in the area. The convenience can't be beat, though, because you can walk across the street to get back to quicker! > > Hi Tonia Just wanted to say again I will be thinking of you and > next Friday when he goes in for his open Heller fingers crossed this > time that he get many years of happy eating. > > Please please let us know when you can of course how you and him are > doing I know its going to be a long car ride for you all and am glad > to hear that you have decided to stay for a couple of days after he > comes out. Guest guest
Thank you ! I am hoping to post the day of the surgery but we know how thats going to be.I will post as soon as I get to the hotel the next day to shower for sure.We are staying at the Cleaveland guest house but I do not like the hotel at all.It is across the street(quick walk) and much more affordable than the others though. We will just be there to shower and thats it so he doesnt matter too much but when gets out we are going to pay the big bucks to stay in the nice one that ajoings the hospital.I want him to stay and recover a few days in a nicer/cleaner hotel before our long ride back home.Anyway- Thanks for the post and yes I wll post our longggg ordeal and anwser any and all questions any one would like when we get home. Guest guest
Hey Pippa- 4 pounds is great and keeping the food down and not having trouble getting it down is priceless!!It may take time for the scar thing to get better.Have you talked to your Dr about that to make sure its all normal? It seems like it would be but just to be safe ya know. Potaoes, gravy, custard kinda stuff still huh? Boy is going to hate that again! He doesnt even like to look at those foods any more cause he has had to eat so much of that just a few months back,we will just wait till his hungry and tell him and he will be ready to eat it then.lol Poor guy.He is actually only 13,there is carolyns son on here with A who is 15. still like his hugs and loves even at that age.Hes a real lovable kid still despite being a teenager now but this ordeal has really made him moody and caused alot of aggravation and angerI have never seen till recently.Hes mad cause of having to go through this again, the long hospital stay, surgery, scars, healing process, and not being able to be at school again around friends and going out with them etc..He also is tired of not being normal.i just hope after this he will be atleast 90% better and not have to deal with this disease/disorder on a daily basis like now.I think thats been the hardest. The struggles every time he eats ordeal. He still thinks of me though with all that is going on with him and he makes me a cup of tea or coffee and brings me a blanket if he knows I have had a ruff day at work or if I dont feel that great.Hes a sweet kid.Hope he stays that way even when hes grown, hell make a great hubby some day.lol Thanks again Pippa and I hope your scar gets to feeling better-Be sure to keep you some lotion on it Im sure that will help too.Hugs to you xoxoxo Tonia > > > > > > Hi Tonia Just wanted to say again I will be thinking of you and > > > > > next Friday when he goes in for his open Heller fingers crossed > > this > > > time that he get many years of happy eating. > > > > > > Please please let us know when you can of course how you and him > > are > > > doing I know its going to be a long car ride for you all and am > > glad > > > to hear that you have decided to stay for a couple of days after > > he > > > comes out. Guest guest
Tonia, Carolyn sent me a fantastic link that will take you to a diet sheet for anyone who has had a fundo surgery check out message number 38300 I'm sure will find a few things on there that may keep him happy in the few weeks after surgery. The scar thing is just normal the Doctor has checked it out and its all healing nicely it just gonna take time. I keep getting your and Carolyns sons mixed up (SOrRY BRAIN STILL NOT WITH IT YET) I sent carolyn an e-mail the other day and asked how JAMES was she e-mailed back and said the CAMERON was doing just fine. sounds like a very lovely lad you must be very proud of him and rightly so. I do feel for he is going through so much at the moment not just the surgery but I am sure all those hormones are flying around as well (and don't I know it with a 12 and 14 year old lads in the house) my son is a bit like he aways helps around the house and makes sure that I am OK and that I don't need anything when he goes upstairs to his bedroom or out with his mates we never have any bother regarding homework he always completes it with top marks, my other son Luke is the complete opposite!!!! Could 's friend contact him (obviously not visit as it is too far away) through e-mail while he is in hospital or even send him letters and card I'm sure it would give him a great boost Pippa x PS just slapping on the lotion now > > > > > > > > Hi Tonia Just wanted to say again I will be thinking of you > and > > > > > > > next Friday when he goes in for his open Heller fingers > crossed > > > this > > > > time that he get many years of happy eating. > > > > > > > > Please please let us know when you can of course how you and > him > > > are > > > > doing I know its going to be a long car ride for you all and > am > > > glad > > > > to hear that you have decided to stay for a couple of days > after > > > he > > > > comes out. Guest guest
, Bimal also had a drainage tube after laparoscopic surgery ..till the day he was discharged.. Mukesh Tonia Hey Tonia Just wanted to let you know that with my laproscopic procedure that I did have a drainage tube. It remained in place until just before being released. I had no idea that others with the lap procedure didn't have a drainage tube. Thanks for keeping in touch throughout 's stay. Jo

Guest guest
Tonia, We are vegetarians anyway..bimal is eating soft indian breads, cooked Soft vegetables, Rice, soups, yogurt in lunch n dinner.. Cereals n lukewarm milk in breakfast .. Dr. Has advised to avoid orange n sweetlime for 3 weeks..but other fruits are okay.. Jayshree ,bimal 's mom has gone to spend a month or so with bimal ..to cook these special foods, now semi-hard for him.. But we are still avoiding pizza, fried foods for the time being... will be fine soon..plz avoid meats, pizza, fried foods etc for few more days...need to go slow till 3 weeks are over... Mukesh Mukesh So glad to hear he is doing so well-Thats great news!! You had mentioned about him being back to almost normal foods. what types of food has he attempted that has done ok that is not jello, pudding, potatoes??lol Ya know the mushy stuff. is getting so tired of those types foods. He has ventured out and I gave him some manicotti with a lil sauce,he's also had some cereal like apple jacks that sits in the milk and softens, french fries, pumpkin pie with out crust.DR Rice said to still stay away from breads and meats, rice stuff like that.He did say tuna casserole and gorund beef with gravy would be fine but doesnt care for neither-even in his days of hunger.lol We are going to try some crab legs, and some broiled fish this week.I also bought some crab cakes. So all thats just as mushy as tuna right. Just want to see how everyone else is doing and what kinda food there tolerating.I want to go slow and be careful though too ya know? Thanks alot- I am really happy that Bimal is doing so well.I hope and pray that everyone will have very long lasting results from these operations! Guest guest
I can't see rushing driving so long for tests that could be done locally -- Tonia Wow, sorry to hear this.. Call the "colleague" back and ask if the testing can be done here at home and overnight the results to him. I dont remember where you live, but maybe he can "order" it for you? Ask also if he has been in touch with Dr. Rice. Tell him you want to confir with him or them both. All you can do is try. I called DR Rice today and told them what was going on.Rice is out of town but his partner or whoever said he wanted up there tomorrow.I expressed to them it wasnt that easy.We have to get work situated for my husband, dog boarded, someone to watch the house, hotel reservations, bags backed and plus my husband was out of town and hadnt even got home tonight when I was told all this.He had been driving for a while and there is no way we can just jump in the car tonight and drive 8 hours no sleep.I dont think 's situation is as bad as they are making it but I am not the Dr but I am not letting anyone other than Rice touch -colleage or not anyway! They said should not be having any problems and he needed to be seen tomorrow regardless. If he was vmiting, spitting blood or something a litle more severe we would of course drop everything and go but I think someone is being a little to jumpy.Dr Rice is out of town until Tuesday so I think this other DR does not want nothing being held over his head so he wants to see to just be careful. If there was something wrong like I said no one except Rice is messing with him unless of course it was a life or death kinda ordeal but I dont see it as that. They want to do a barrium and possible scope if needed.Heres where I need your help-I know its all personal opinion and preference but what would you all do in this situation? Should I go on Friday after I have time to get these things together and we get some sleep for the ride or just waitt ill we talk to Rice on Tuesday? I JUST AM CONFUSED AS TO WHAT TO DO. is eating like a pig and everything. He does have a cold and has a cough and sniffles and such but other than that he is fine,no other problems. He had roast beef sandwiches from Arbys today and large curly fry and cocunut cake for desert with no problems.Ijust think its jumping too quickly over something not that serious. Please what do you all think???I dont want to run up ther for only a barrium and it be nothing wrong but dont want not to go and it be something but if thats the case we would wait till tuesday for Rice to get back in anayway.I kinda think its where he has bee having this cold and dealing with all the phlem and such in his esophagus.Help me please!!!!!!!!Tonia need ideas to promote your fundraiser or business? check out our new website! wicked cat promotional products www.wickedcatpromos.com __________________________________________________
Guest guest
I talked with them and told them we are just going to wait until Dr Rice comes into to town and if is having issues then we will be bringing him up there. We have to go up on the 18th and 19th for testing as well so if we did not need to go up this time then we will be up there then. I asked them yesterday if I could have a barrium done here and sent up there and then if they saw concern bring him up and the DR on call said NO.There was no specialist here that he needed brought back up there.People here like gastro DRs Im sure can read a barrium enough to see if there is a issue.I would not let no one do anything else but that would be fine.Well its not that easy to jump in a car and run 8 hours like they think it is ya know.I do know that the people the past few days(nurses and appointment ladies) have been extremely rude, loud.I had to finally unleash my attitude today cause Im sick of them talking to me like crap! Anyway-How is Cameron doing?Does Cameron ever feel like things are not going down that well more so than other? says he thinks its more cause of this cold and all the phlem. It does still worry me though cause he has that foam stuff again and he hadnt had that since surgery either.I just will be relieved when he has his test done and all is cleared things are fine. Guest guest
I agree- I asked them if he could have abarrium done here and electrincaly sent for them to view and then....at that point if they saw concern we would come up.He said no-these DrS ARE NOT SPECIALIST AND HE NEEDED TO BE UP THERE.They are just going to have to work with me here cause I cant jump in the car everytime there is a isuue but yet we need to confrim with a barrium that things are ok.I am just going to go to the gastro Dr that diagnosed and when there is a issue have him check him out and do a barrium. If he thinks we ever need to go to Cleveland then we will go or if Dr Rice said we needed to come. Gosh- I just wish we were closer! Guest guest
Hi Tonia, Just a reply to your post's, I too seem to get more stuckages when I have a cold too. I know Jame's surgery was around the same time as mine and I still have problems with food taking it's good old time getting down. The difference post surgery is that I don't get that build up of food that makes the chest feel tight and painful. But I also notice that when the phlem builds up in the esophagus and when I'm stressed, there is more dysphagia. Remember there will always be difficulty swallowing because there is no motility and only gravity getting the food down. If you do decide to do a barium, make sure you get the info about the timed barium because I believe thats only specific to TCC. But even after surgery, I definitly have good days and bad days... just the bad days aren't as BAD as they use to be before surgery! All the best in the New Year! in Michigan P.S. I just got engaged about 2 weeks ago!!! I'm very excitied! > > The other night informed his dad and myself that he has been > > having some issues with food feeling like its getting stuck or not > > going down well.ALSO HAS BEEN HAVING ALOT OF THE " FOAMY " STUFF > AGAIN. > > He said he didnt tell us earlier becuase he said hes going through > > anything else again and didnt want us dragging him to Cleveland > and > > being there at Christmas. Guest guest
> > > Hey Tonia. Did you get it all worked out? How is doing? Hope it is better! Cameron is doing really well. Had his 18month check up and everything is wonderful. He can eat anything... but he wets his esophagus first... then eats with waterr to keep any thing from sticking. this seems to be all he needs to do. Did you get it all resolved with ? I know for Cameron we had the video barium done and we mailed the DVD to his surgeon to review. No questions there. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year! Guest guest
Thanks Carolyn- Glad he is doing so well, thats great! seems to be ok now.I just believ it was this cold.I have not talked to Rice yet,I will just wait unless has other issues cause we will see him on the 18th anyway. Who done Camerons surgery>I thought it was Rice for some reason. I am going to ask Rice if that can be done if a issue should arise. This way I can know if we need to make a trip or not. family Dr said he could do the barrium here and mail to him if needed but this DR on call said NO! I think Rice will say the same but thats how it is going to be.Well do a barrium and send it for review before we jump and run up there at every issue or concern. Its the same if we do it here and he reads it there, or if its done up there and then he reads it.Either way he will know if its a concern before a 8 hour trip is needed. Anyway- I am so glad to hear Cameron is doing well.I hope he continues to have another great year in 2007!! HAPPY NEW YEAR TO YOU GUYS!!!!
