Cam,

I have the results of my bone scan the T-score was -1.50

and the hip -2.41.

In 2007 My T-score was -1.70 and hip -2.18

Since my last scan in 2007 my spine score has improved

but my hip score has declined. I have been taking fosamax

for a few years.

The nurse gave told me what was normal:

Normal 0 to -1.0

Osteopenia -1.0 - -2.5

Osteoporosis -2.5 or lower

Deronda,

I have osteopenia, too. I was diagnosed with osteoporosis when I was 33 (I'm 46 now). I took Fosamax for 13 year which is what improved my scores. After the first 1-2 years my scores worsened but then started improving. I stopped taking Fosamax last year just to take a year off. When I have my DEXA in February, I will decide if I'm going to resume the medication.

I'm a volunteer moderator for a chat board on Inspire for the National Osteoporosis Foundation. Let me know if you want a link to the site so that you can learn more about osteoporosis/penia.

Peggy,

Right now I am just trying to focus on taking care of my back and facing

the fact that I will be probably be facing surgery. I just wondered what

affect osteopenia or osteoporosis would have with revision surgery.

Deronda,

It is good that you are tracking this now. On top of the fosomax are you able

to follow the other bone building protocols (diet and exercise?). I honestly

dont know much about this subject as I have not have any more than a cursory

scan at the ankle that was fine 2 years ago. , on the other hand, really

had to get treated for this condition.

Let us know what, if any, changes are suggested by DrBridwell.

Take Care, Cam

Deronda,

Bone density is important in the placement of hardware, and having the hardware once placed staying put. During my last revision there was places my bone quality wasn't good enough to place screws there. After surgery since my doc wants all my hardware to stay in place, they were very aggressive in treating my osteoporosis. I did 12 monthly rounds of a IV drug Aredia( used when Breast cancer goes to the bone, no I don't have cancer, they just treated me like I did), with that drug which was pretty yucky, and I got pretty ill on it, I maintained what bone quality I had and stopped loosing ground. I take Fosamax now, and have held steady.

All this was very surprising, I was in my early forties, and no one thinks osteoporosis at that age. I'm adopted, and have no access to my family history to know if this runs in my family. So I eat dairy, take calcium, walk, and hope for the best.

I was concerned about the osteoporosis, too, but Dr. Hey said my spine and pelvis seemed to be in great shape when he did my revision.

I had to wear a brace for 6 months after revision due to osteopenia. Dr. LaGrone found it during the surgery. Melinda

+++Hi Judy,

I don't know what -1.3 means. When I had a bone scan they said I had 35% loss

in my hips and about 15% loss in my spine. I was not taking cal/mag supplements

at the time, and the loss was tremendously less in 2 years. But after finding

out how damaging bone scans are I refuse to get any more, but of course I'm

healthy now so I wouldn't have bone loss.

I found out the medical industry created the term " osteopenia " in order to get

younger women to do bone scans so they can make more money, and of course they

can hope to get more women on bone loss drugs. That's good you were not advised

to take any drugs.

When you are unhealthy your body robs bones of their minerals in order to keep

important organs functioning correctly, but if you are on this program you are

getting all of the nutrients, including minerals, your body needs.

Minerals can only be absorbed and utilized in the body if you get the correct

combination of good fats recommended on this program, including cod liver oil

(contains omega 3, and vitamins A & D), vitamin E, saturated fats like unrefined

coconut oil, butter, lard, and other animals fats. Of course all of the

nutrients work together, i.e. protein, vitamins, minerals, fats, etc.

Of course minerals and fats also require other nutrients like protein, vitamins,

etc. so that's why I write " all nutrients work together " .

No, you do not need to take more calcium than I recommend. Taking more will

throw of minerals balances.

Your body is smart enough to balance out all of its minerals, vitamins,

hormones, etc. when you treat it the way Nature intended.

All the best, Bee

+++Hi Judy V.

Sorry, I forgot to answer your question about how much of soaked eggshell you

should be drinking per day, but you did not say which recipe you are following.

If you get too much calcium it throws off the balance of magnesium and also

other minerals, so it is important to take the amount I recommend.

This is the last statement on # 1 Lemon Eggshell recipe:

The recipe says to take 1/2 teaspoon of this mixture daily, but with the added

lemon 1/2 teaspoon would not equal 400 mgs of calcium, so it is hard to judge

how much of the mixture to take in order to get enough calcium.

Here's the statements on # 2 Lemon Eggshell recipe:

-Take no more than one teaspoon per day initially because it can be very

powerful. Start slowly. The amount may be gradually increased over time.

Bee's Note: The amount to take of this mixture is not easy to figure out. One

eggshell (size is not stated) yields about 750 – 800 mgs of elemental calcium.

Therefore 3 eggs would contain 2,250 – 2,400 mg.

That's why I recommend the Powdered Eggshell recipe so you can be sure to take

300 mg calcium two times and day, which has doses just after the recipe.

All the best, Bee
