Guest guest
Hi Teena, Just got home awhile ago. Luckily we got in before the snowstorm started. Had to go to the drug store, Jess is back on Prednisone. This is a mild flare, but we don't want it to get any worse. She is 14--almost 15. Would like to get this flare over with before her birthday next month. It's already over 2 weeks old, hasn't gotten much worse since it started, just not any better either. She usually feels like stopping for dinner, and that makes the visit more bearable. We also try to stop at a teen resale shop she adores too. My hubby also gets his info from me. He's not a big city person, or a dr. person, so it's just as easy for us to go and he stays home and picks the little one up after work. I don't think any of us really understand this disease, but this list has really helped out alot. Most of it still makes my head spin!! Jess also has the rash, not as itchy this time as in Oct/Nov. Her rheumy seems to finally be convinced that it is JRA, systemic. This is the first visit of several that she hasn't said she isn't convinced of the diagnosis. Just thankful that so far this flare is relatively mild. As always my thoughts and prayers to all parents and children dealing with this disease!! Guest guest
Teena, Hello!!! We got about 5 inches of snow Thurs. and another 2-3 inches today. The kids didn't have school Thurs. but they did on Fri. Only time will tell about Monday. Jess is feeling better since they put her back on Prednisone. Just hates the constant hunger. Just before she got sick, she had watched what she ate and had gotten down to her target weight, and now that always seems to elude her. I have bought alot of fruit and she is trying to just use that as her craving food. She seems to have gotten some energy back, but is still rashy and itchy. I'm glad to hear your kids are all feeling better, just hope you can get your pain under control soon, so you can enjoy their good days. I have never been to the chatroom, just never seems to be enough time, it's all I can do to read all of this. I only make it online every couple of days to check this list, take notes, and make replies. Will try to do better in the future. jodi The7thJourney@... wrote: > From: The7thJourney@... > > Jodi, > Hello! Guest guest
Hi Jodi, I hope your daughter is starting to feel a bit better by now. What doses of prednisone did the doctor suggest, to try to get her over this recent flare? Is it a tapering schedule, starting high and going lower or just the same dose everyday for a certain period of time? I always liked to do something special the day we saw the rheumatologist, too. Actually, the day my son needs to get his blood work done. So even though he needed to do something he can't stand, he'd have some fun to remember that day, too. Our schedule changed a bit when he was switched from oral methotrexate to sub-q injections. Now, every Thursday we stop down at the oncology center and the nurse gives him the shot, and once a month (or more often, depending on need) they also do his bloodwork at the same time. It's made it lots easier and less traumatic, as we used to need to drive across town specifically to get the blood drawings done. This way, it's right after school (before driving the kids home) and very quick. Just part of our routine. Well, I'm glad you found our list. And I hope your daughter starts having some improvements soon. Take Care, Georgina Jodi Giffin wrote: > Just got home awhile ago. Luckily we got in before the snowstorm started. Guest guest
Hi Georgina, Jess is feeling better. Still slightly rashy at times, and afraid to stop taking the 'itch pills'. Today is her last day of pred. It has been a tapering schedule, started at 45 mg. a day for 2 days. Rheumy said we didn't have to come back unless we needed to. Not too sure how I feel about that, but maybe I'm being too protective. Just thought would need to keep a closer eye on her. But maybe they were trying to save us from so many trips down there. I don't mind the trip, if it keeps her feeling better! Jess also doesn't mind, it usually gets her out of school early, a little shopping, and dinner out--just the 2 of us. Guest guest
Hi jodi, I'm glad to hear Jess is starting to feel a little better. We are really lucky in that my son's JRA rash doesn't itch. That must be so hard to deal with. Joah has also been lucky that instead of showing up in very visible places, his rash normally only appears on his upper arms, upper thighs and on his chest/tummy. When he's been really sick, it occassionally came up on his back, too. All those places are normally hidden by clothing, even shorts and a t-shirt, so other people don't ever see it unless he chooses to show them. Oh, that's a little funny. My son has gotten so tired of seeing doctors that I think he'd most times prefer being at school, instead of taking time off for another appt Actually, I just got a call from his eye doctor. Time for his eye exams, again. Two appts this month. One during school hours and one after school, at the end of the month. We'll see how that goes. He still hasn't grown any taller, so it's difficult to set him up for one of the exams, to test his field of vision (since he takes plaquinel). I'm curious to see if they've come up with any new ideas or if we'll still have Josh balanced precariously on top of a stack of phone books! Well, have a great day. And tell Jess to hang in there ~Georgina Jodi Giffin wrote: > > From: Jodi Giffin <qltlady@...> > > Hi Georgina, > Jess is feeling better. Guest guest
Hi all!! Sorry it's been so long---things are very busy and hectic around here. Jess still seems to be in a semi-flare. She is still rashy, and her wrist is swollen and sore. Some days very little movement--am going to call rheumy and go from there. Her rashes show up in different places every day it seems. She gets it on her hands and forearms as much as on her upper legs and stomach. Not much on her back and neck these days tho--was real bad there in the beginning. We just celebrated her 15th birthday yesterday. Well have hundreds more letters from the list to catch up on. Hope everyone's doing well..........Jodi Georgina wrote: > From: Georgina <gmckin@...> > > Hi jodi, > > I'm glad to hear Jess is starting to feel a little better. Guest guest
Jodi... You know what? I think it was BulletNurse that I was supposed to meet in Mexicali since I would be there anyway. I think I was with someone getting a fill or something, someone from here in Phoenix. I went to meet her and I saw her in the hallway as they were taking her to OR. I thought that was her but since she was on her way to OR I didn't want to stop and chat. ;o) BulletNurse, are you out there? ;o) I've been meaning to apologize and explain that I was there but you were... busy! Busy going to OR. Congrats on getting banded, Jodi! Now the skinny person in you will come out in no time! Guest guest
I have no doubt that you will be right here beside me one day. For now, I'll keep pulling you along this road towards your goal! Let me say this, too. ENJOY the journey! As crazy as it sounds, you will miss that journey once you have reached your goal. Kind of like that sort of let down feeling after spending so much time planning a wedding. The wedding is over and a little sadness creeps in. Kind of like post pardum depression in a way. For nine months all you think about is that wonderful life inside of you and you cannot wait until you can hold him/her. But, then, once you have given birth, there is a twinge of sadness that the day has come and gone. Maybe it isn't quite as monumental in the eyes of some people but when you have spent an entire year working towards that magical goal weight, once you hit it, what then? What will you focus on? You have to set a new goal. So, if I could do one thing differently, it would be to simply enjoy the journey a little more. It was an awesome experience! I have a much greater appreciation for everything in my life because I have a much greater appreciation for ME! Enjoy, JenniJodi <mermaid_jodi@...> wrote: Jenni...thank you for you candor. JodiJ Currie <giftedtch > wrote: You know, we all have it. We have all lived with it for years...many for as long as we can remember. We all fear that, after our bands, we won't be able to control that monster that got us in the predicament that we are in causing us to need the band in the first place. Well, I'm here to tell you that, after almost 19 months of living with my lapband and losing over 100 pounds, that physical desire for food, even when I'm not hungry, is still lurking by. I still have certain times of the day that are harder than others. I still have some days or even weeks that are harder than others. But, with the help of my band, I can regain some control even after I feel like I've lost that control. Let me explain. I am a carb addict. I have narrowed down my addiction to the point that I know exactly what my addictions are and carbs and chocolate are neck in neck. There are some days when I cannot stop eating those things. Sun Chips, Doritos, Plain Lays, crackers....THOSE are my weakness. Chocolate. Chocolate kisses, chocolate cookies, chocolate anything and I am hooked. Even with my band! And you thought you would never be able to eat the things you love again??? Have no fear, these things work perfectly well once you learn how to graze on them so they don't get stuck! Now, I am not advising you that this is what you should do! This is just reality with the lapband. So, I would imagine some of you are wondering, then, just where does the band come into play here? In January 2006, I weighed 247 pounds. I would feed my carb/chocolate addiction every single day and never stop. Hell, I would think about stopping but the addiction was simply too strong and I was too weak. In September 2007, I weigh 140 pounds. I have not stayed at this weight, mind you, but I'm here now. I reached my goal of 145 and actually went beyond that goal to weigh 140. HOWEVER, I have gained all the way back up to 153(without mentioning it on this board, however!). How? Why??? Because I allowed that food addiction monster to rear its ugly head again. But, you know what? The difference this time was that when I decided that I was miserable and I felt like I weighed 250 again, and, even worse, that I thought everyone else would see that I had gained all my weight back (although it was not noticable) I decided that I HAD to do something. I got back on the "band" wagon and, amazingly, I LOST IT ALL again in a relatively short amount of time. THAT is the beauty of the band. Yeah, I gained a little weight back but the band was there to help me when I got my mind and my butt back in gear to lose it again. My band has never failed me. Oh, I have failed my band numerous times but she has NEVER failed me. My band is there, doing her job the very best that I allow her to do. At times I think I need a fill but I never rush into that because most of the time it isn't a fill I need but a kick in the rear to get back to doing what I should be doing. I'm bad about wanting to do things like opt for frozen yogurt for dinner rather than solid foods and, after a while, I'm thinking I need a fill. But, then, when I eat the solid foods I SHOULD be eating, I realize I DO have some restriction and it isn't a band issue but a choice issue so I reevaluate my needs and put off getting that fill one more month. I have learned that having a fill is NOT going to keep me from eating those foods which cause me to gain weight. I HAVE to do that. I HAVE to use my band the way it is intended to be used...as a tool rather than a cure. My band didn't make me lose all this weight, it simply helped ME lose it. Me. I did this. And you know what? YOU can do this too! EVEN with the physical desire for food. It is possible. There will be moments of weakness. Days or weeks of weakness. Normal people have those too. I bet Nina, as beautiful and small as she is, has them as well. Just ask her. She'll admit it. The difference is that normal people don't have these days over and over and over and over again. They give in every now and then. They overindulge but then they don't do it again for a good while. That is normal. We can be normal! I'm simply rambling so I'll stop. I was hoping you could elaborate on the head games you experienced in the months after your op. I worry about the head stuff that I'll have to face up to down the line: I can imagine my taste buds and my head still wanting to devour that georgeous big rib eye steak and fries, washed down with a large glass of Sanoma County Pino Noir and yet I'll physically PB if I tried. It's that love of food which I am worried about - I know it's going to be a huge adjustment. I'm also not a great chewer of food and tend to eat quickly. My wife has to kick me under the table whenever we're dinning with friends! I put this down to boarding school where because of the long queue to the cafeteria we ended up with about 5 minutes to start and finish the meal before getting back to our house. The physical desire for the food is going to be my problem I think. Is this what you are refering to as the head stuff?Chris> >> > Hello! I have some quick questions. How many of you have lost more than> > 100 pounds after the lapband surgery?
