Guest guest
Hi Trina, you'll do great. I too did it alone too, in France no less. Luckily, I spoke quite a bit with the coordinator ahead of time and she put me in touch (via email) with a gal from Wales who was being banded the same day (I had a couple of months notice) -- we corresponded and became friends over the internet - met for the first time the day before we had surgery and went to our first appointment together. We decided to share a hospital room - raised some eyebrows in France (which surprised me - we Americans view them as so sophisticated about such matters - LOL) and we've remained friends. Why don't you see if your Dr. can hook you up via email with any of the others? It made it a better experience for me. Good luck. Guest guest
Trina, Please check the original SmartBandsters list, (SmartBandsters ), that is where general banding questions pertaining to post op foods, etc. are usually answered. You're much more likely to get a lot more info there than you will on this list, which is mostly for announcements of local band gatherings, etc. Good luck with your surgery! Guest guest
I wish you the best. Both of my TKR surgeries were a total success. I am so glad that I can walk without pain. Guest guest
Congrats on having a date! You all are getting me nearly brave enough to visit my (really, really cute) orthopedic guy and ask to start this process. I have two very worn-out knees - had old-style fillet-and-scrape cartilidge surgery in the 60's and 70's and was super morbidly obese until weight loss surgery last summer. I'm on disability and have a suspicion that I'd better get this process going sooner than later - later being if and when I go past 2 years on Social Security disability and go on Medicare; sooner being I'm paying for COBRA benefits from my job. I've been working on my house to get it ready. I already have bars to get in and out of tub, and a leftover raised toilet seat from a back injury 15 years ago (I wonder if I could sell it on e-bay as an antique?). My little 1950's crackerbox of a rambler did not have a way to get from the house to the laundry room without going outside, so I had a sunroom put on so I can get back and forth with no steps, just thresholds, which I think will be manageable even with a walker. Plus the sunroom will be really, really nice to sit in the sun during recovery. I got stuff moved around so the hallway to my bedroom is now completely clear, and I have good wide spaces to get into and out of places with walker or crutches. Next week I get my new floor in my laundry room and then it's just tying up odds and ends of painting and arranging knick-knacks. But with all of the increased activity, my knees, which are now starting to bow outwards, are complaining to the point where I'm nearly in tears at night. I have a friend's wedding beginning of October that I *WILL NOT* miss, but after than, I think I could do it. So I think I'll go to my orthopedic guy next month and get started. <insert name of benificent deity here> I'm scared! Z (I shouldn't kid myself)(I really got the sunroom so the cats could lie belly-up in the sunshine) ;D

Guest guest
Oh my! Oh my! Oh my! They just called with the date for my surgery. It April 16th! Only two weeks from now. I was expecting at least two months to plan this, but they had a cancellation. The second surgery will be the 21st.... EEEEEEEEEK! I'm freaking out! How do I prepare for this in just two weeks? Not even enough time to debate the whole 'My blood or not " issue. They said I could wait until July, but I hate the thought of dragging this out longer than I have to. Who has some down-to-the-wire advise? -Dyann Diamond
Guest guest
Hi Dyann, Maybe it's better not to have months to think about it?! but I'm sure you've got a ton of things to do...start a list so you can stay focused on all you have to do before hand. My surgery is in 9 weeks, and my doctor doesn't allow banking one's own blood. It sounds like the screening processes are fine for blood received at hospital, from the feedback I've gotten here. Where will your surgery be? What doctor? I wish you all the best with your journey, and will keep you in my prayers! Please keep everyone posted! How is your son doing? take care...you'll get it all done...somehow it will just work out!...lauren From: dyanndiamond <dyanndiamond@...> Sent: Wednesday, April 1, 2009 3:59:58 PMSubject: [ ] I have a date Oh my! Guest guest
Dyann, Wow! this may fall under the " careful what you wish for " column...but at least you will be spared months of imagining all kinds of things and getting frantic about it. Dr Horton has done staged surgeries on Diane and Joyce, so just in case you haven't heard from them privately it might be useful to shoot them an email and see if there is anything specific about the hospital setup that is useful to know about. A lot of people have a husband or caregiver stay over in their room if the hospital permits it for at least a few days...so they may have some advice there. directed you to the file on " what to take to the hospital " which I think pretty well covers that period. Right now I would make sure I had my house set up and stocked for the first month. Get things out of low cabinets up to waist height that you will need. Put in a variety of laxatives and/or stool softeners. Make sure you have some tylanol on hand. Buy a box or two of flexible straws. By a toilet seat riser and a graber. Relocate a phone near your bed. For the first year or so you will probably be most comfortable in an unpadded or lightly padded chair when you sitting. Most sofas and chairs are way to soft....so see that you have something like that in you home. I also had (and still have) a variety of medium occasional pillow around the house (as well as one in the car)as it really helps to have something to stuff in that new lordosis for at least a year! Make any necessary arrangments for husband/kids/pets. There is a link to sever on-line systems that are said to be very helpful in arranging for your friends and family to fill " holes " for you. People will want to help and even if you are not the sort to ask for help (and really, us scoli, overcompensation syndrome folks tend to fit that characterization)...ask for it. Let people help. If you haven't already done your Health Care proxy you will probably have to do one before they admit you for surgery...I think its standard practice these days...so you might want to look in to that. Make sure your will is up to date....grim as that sounds on the day of surgery you will feel better knowing you are up to date on that kind of thing. Make sure someone else knows relevant passwords for on line accounts, and is covering your financial interests while you are recovering. If you haven't yet filed you taxes, just file for an extension and put it off til this summer when you are looking for things to do. Check into your authorizations from you insurance companies. My experience was that the surgeon or the hospital took care of that, but you wouldn't want a " show stopper " to creep up on you. If you want to try to relax a little and possibly be helpful to your body...I recommend using the " Successful Surgery " guided imagry CD by Belleruth Naparstek. The membership has been passing a few CD copies around, but perhaps someone can send you theirs if they are done with it. Since time is of the essence,it is also possible to download it directly too. I found that even the night before surgery the relaxing voice put me to sleep and I loved having the positive images to focus on. You can find it in the " Links " section. After looking through our files I guess we ought to make a handy dandy list for the " after the hospital " phase. I will get working on that. In the mean time...dont get frantic...it will all come together. I will let you know anything else I can think of...and I hope anyone that has other ideas chimes in...time is short!
