Guest guest
Hi everyone - Well it's been a few weeks since I fell down cement steps and landed on my tailbone and elbow. I called my Neurosurgeon after it happened as I was afraid that I might have done damage since I have the two lumbar herniated discs, degenerative disc disease, sciatica, joint inflammation, etc. etc. etc. He said to stay on the anti-inflammatories that he has put me on for the joint inflammation and give it about a week or so for the inflammation to come down and see if I had any pain show up after that. I didn't get any other pain other than being really stiff and sore, along with the pain that I have had from the joint inflammation. But the muscle stiffness did get worse last week to the point where I couldn't sit down and stand up too easily. In order to get up I'd have to put my hands on my knees and then walk my hands up my thighs till I was in a standing position. I knew then it was time to do something. So I started taking the muscle relaxers that I was also prescribed, and went to my chiropractor. I told her that I didn't want to be adjusted but just wanted the tens unit and the traction table. I had that done twice last week and started feeling a lot better. I can walk and move around almost normally again, at least normal for me lately. If I don't take the muscle relaxers though for a few days I can feel my lower back tensing up again. But during my first appointment with my chiro she took two x-rays of my lower back just to make sure I didn't break anything when I fell. She took one straight on and one from the side. The side-view one showed that my tailbone and coccyx bone is looped almost rather than just being slightly curved forward. I don't know if I've always had that, or if that happened as a result of my fall. All I know is that no one has ever told me that before. The front-view one showed that my spine in one section is not only curved from the scoliosis, but also twisted now too! The facet bones that come out from the sides of your spine are pointed slight to the front and back instead of side to side. She said that that could be from muscle spasms, that the muscles are grabbing and pulling at my spine on one side. I put a call into my Neurosurgeon's office again, so I'm waiting for him to call me back for me to give him this update. But I was wondering what everyone else thought of all this and if anyone has any suggestions on what I should do??? Thanks!! Jenn --------------------------------- Want to be your own boss? Guest guest
Hi Jenie it sure sounds like you have had a bad time lately. I would say stay on your muscle relaxers. And take it as easy as you can still and rest as much as possible still. I don't know how you could go without them with the pain you are in. I never could live without taking mine. In fact my back got so bad that they uped me to a higher dose and I pretty much stay on that. If I miss or am late taking them I can really tell cause my back starts hurting a lot more. As for the other stuff I'd wait till you talk to your neuro and see what he has to say about all of that. I am sure he knows a lot more than any of us does about your back and what is going on in there. Hang in there and I hope your pain gets less from your fall soon. It really is terrible how much more a fall can make us feel than a normal person. So much that I am so careful NOT to fall ever I try to be so careful all the time. Cause I know that even a little one will make my pain level go alot higher. Hope you hear from the dr soon and he figures out what you should do. Best wishes. Guest guest
Thank you so much Sharon. My BIGGEST fear since my first onset of pain from my herniated discs about three years ago, is falling. I was so shaken up after it happened too from the fear of what I could have just injured now. Do you know if muscle relaxers are safe to be on long term though? That's one of the reasons I was afraid to stay on it is I don't know if they're safe or not. I'm on Skelaxin or something like that. The bottle is allllll the way upstairs. darkstarzz1019 <darkstarzz1019@...> wrote: Hi Jenie it sure sounds like you have had a bad time lately. Guest guest
--Hi Jenie it sounds like you need a good dr who will treat all your pain. Luckily I have a good PM dr that has done everything in their power to help me. Even if it meant seeing me every week when my pain was increasing horribly. They have been so good to me. I don't know how I would have ended up without them the last few years. Because before I saw them I was getting the run around from everyone including my reg. dr who had given up on me. It sounds like you do alot and that maybe making your back worse. I am on the highest dose of nerve pill that you can take and have been there for a long time, so too with most of the things I take anymore. But not everyone can take that much. It drives me nuts the way I forget things and how I can fall asleep at the drop of a hat sometimes but that is what I have to live with to deal with this pain. I NEVEr considered not taking my nerve pills cause I could tell when I was late even taking one, my sciatic nerve would start screaming at me. As for sleeping on your side I could never do that once my back got worse it made it hurt more. I had to start sleeping on my back which I have never done in my life but any other way made me hurt more when I woke up. You might try getting a pad for your bed one of those memory foam type ones instead of getting a new bed and see if that helps. I know you can buy different kinds all over the place. I hope your dr calls you back soon. Has he even said he could do anything to help you surgical wise?? Or is he just waiting until you get so bad then he will do something to help you?? I hope its not the later but I know too many dr's I met where that way. Don't be discouraged I went thru probably 12 dr's in the last 5 yrs, trying to find ones that would actually help me. Only one would and he has done all 4 of my surgeries. So far the last one seems to have helped I just keep praying it will contiue to get better with time. But I did notice the more active I got the more I hurt so I cut back some and started resting again more. Good luck I hope you feel better this week and talk to your dr soon. Guest guest
You've been through four surgeries and you're still in pain? What type of surgeries? My doctor has been wonderful to me, knows exactly what he's talking about, etc. but a lot of times he just sends me for this test and that test. He never really mentions surgery because no doctor, including him, can tell me conclusively that all of my pain is coming from my discs. See, my two herniations are more centrally herniated or slightly to the left so every doctor I have seen tells me that if I have nerve pain it should be down my left leg. The nerve pain down my leg is down my right. So because of that, they still can't figure out what is causing the sciatic pain down my right. He doesn't want to do surgery on me and have me be in the same condition I'm in now. I doubted that at first, but since then every doctor I have seen has told me the same thing except one who wanted to immediately fuse my entire lumbar spine. I've heard from others since then that that doctor cannot be trusted. darkstarzz1019 <darkstarzz1019@...> wrote: --Hi Jenie it sounds like you need a good dr who will treat all your pain. Guest guest
Hi Jenie sounds like if they figure it out they will try it then and I agree if they can't figure it out they shouldn't try and go in there they might just make it worse. I know I had left leg pain but my right hurt too sometimes and they told me when they put my stimulator in it might later on. That was very common they said after the left side started. They were right in less than a year it did. Yes 4 surgeries over the last 3 yrs. A laminectomy and a cervical fusion. An spinalcord stimulator implant surgery and the last was a double layer fusion. My surgeon says the pain I am in now will go away with time, I doubt it cause most people I have talked too who had successful fusions were NOT in pain afterwards at all. But I knew my chances with sciatic pain for almost 6yrs that it might continue to hurt afterwards. I just pray it doesn't get worse. I hope they figure out what is going on with you soon. Best wishes Sharon Group Owner > > You've been through four surgeries and you're still in pain? The nerve pain down my leg is down my right. So because of that, they still can't figure out what is causing the sciatic pain down my right. He doesn't want to do surgery on me and have me be in the same condition I'm in now. I doubted that at first, but since then every doctor I have seen has told me the same thing except one who wanted to immediately fuse my entire lumbar spine. I've heard from others since then that that doctor cannot be trusted. > > >
Guest guest
Guess what..... my job is switching insurance companies and my Neurosurgeon that I've been seeing for three years is not on my new plan!!!!!! I can't believe everything that you have been through! Isn't there anything that they can do for you so you're not in pain? darkstarzz1019 <darkstarzz1019@...> wrote: Hi Jenie sounds like if they figure it out they will try it then and I agree if they can't figure it out they shouldn't try and go in there they might just make it worse.
