Hi Vera, I'm happy to say that the shoulder pain, at least, has gone away, so it must have been how I slept on it. Thanks for your encouragement. This constant rainfall is getting me down, but the sun has got to come out one of these days!! CharlotteVera Berry <veryberry@...> wrote:

I had really bad shoulder pain after surgery.

Shoulder Pain

Hi,

I'm new to the group. I had my surgery 6-6-05. Have lost 25lbs and

have had relatively few problems. However, I got my 1st fill

yesterday and pretty much since then I have had terrible pain in my

left shoulder. I did not have the problem post op and it doesn't seem

to make sense that it could be gas just from the fill but I can't

imagine what else it could be.

He did give me a 5.5 fill and said it was a lot but I am having no

other problems. I'm being VERY careful what and how I eat but this

shoulder pain is perplexing. Has anyone ever heard of this so far

after surgery?

Thanks,

Georgia

Could be the band " bumping into " the diaphram now because of swelling

of the stomach tissue. You would then get the same " refered " pain as

when the diaphram was stretched by the gas for surgery. It will go

away as any swelling that you may have goes down.

Georgia, Any time the diaphragm is irritated, it can send pain to the

left shoulder along the nerve pathways that go there. This can happen

from the gas at surgery, from overrating and stretching the

diaphragm, or from a large fill that stresses the diaphragm. You

should never have terrible pain with banding or band eating.

This fill sounds too much for you, and I'd suggest getting some out.

Call your fill doc and describe what is going on and I think he'll

agree.

There are many signs of a too-tight fill, and this is one of them,

even if you can eat well. I'm guessing you have the 11 cm or the VG

band, and this first fill amount would be fine for most people with

these bands - but not for YOU - and that is all thast matters. Sandy R

Georgia...

This is the explaination my doctor gave me...

You are over-eating. The pouch expands and presses on the

diaphragm, which has no pain sensors. The pain is referred to your

shoulder.

i have chronic pain in my right shoulder. it`s killing me when someone is

lifting me up under my arm pits. also sometimes when i lay on it and when i sit

without my corset. sometimes it`s ok, like nothing happened. and sometimes i

feel like someone is putting nails in my shoulder. i don`t know what to do about

it - i`m not too eager to see orthopedist as one said it might need surgery :)

anyway i`m afraid that my shoulder must have been twisted out when i was

I am experiencing arm pain continuously. It started with my right shoulder

and how I couldn't lift my arm over my head in bed, because the shoulder

hurt too much. After a couple of years, that specific pain went away. But

now I am stuck with constant arm pain, from the shoulder blades, all the way

down to my fingers. First my right arm had this. Now, its both arms. The

MD doctor I see told me it was from posture. That's why I am fighting to

get a new wheelchair. I hope I will get the chair, and I hope that the arm

pain will go away, or at least, decrease. As I type this, my elbows and

upper arms feel like some wild animal is chewing them. Its awful. :(

I doubt your pain is going to turn into the mess I am in. But you are

probably right in assuming its your posture.

If you find some way to relieve your pain, please tell me. I need help!

God Bless,

Meg

Shoulder pain

This past week, I have developed a pain in my shoulder while lying on

my left side. It's kind of a pressure pain that goes from my shoulder

down to the elbow. It occurs about an hour after lying on my side. I'm

assuming that my posture may be the cause. Has anyone experienced this

and what do they do?

Yes! Probably position. I found that a higher pillow helped me, and

used a neck roll. Also, I adjusted position, roll a litttle bit less.

Can you trace it back to an event or change? A different attendant, a

jolt, an unusual twist?

What kind of mattress do you have? Mine is Roho, but everything

depends on the air!

i've decided that 90% of my pain is position related.. No help, is it?

Yes, I had the spinal rods put inside me when I was 8 or 9 years old. The

doctors said they couldn't wait because I was in danger of dying. So, they

did it, no choice.

Yes, I have pain within an hour of lying on either of my shoulders. I

can only sleep on my back.

Sounds like a lot of us folks have shoulder pain... In my situation

(I am 34 y/o with SMA type 2) apparently I have chronic subluxation in

my shoulders, hips, and knees - this means that these joints ongoingly

will partially dislocate. Not totally dislocate, unless something

major would happen, but every day they partially dislocate. Needless

to say, this leads to ongoing pain. Sometimes I feel like over-cooked

chicken!! I no longer have the muscle strength and tone to keep the

joints tight in the socket.

Has any one ever tried a TENS unit for pain? It works for some folks

and not very well for others. Also, there's a chance of it losing

effectiveness for pain relief. I've used it on all joints when they

get to really hurting for extended periods of time. I've also used it

to help with pain of blood draws and especially on my stomach area

when I got my g-tube. I take my unit and a whole bunch of pads as

part of my hospital " arsenal " - never check-in with out it. :-)

Wouldn't it be nice if we could take an arm or a leg off once in a

while and put it back on when it feels better ;-)

The gas they use to balloon you up so they can work on you will travel

to different areas of your body. It takes a few weeks to work out the

gas, the more you walk the easier it becomes. Some patients do not

expereince pain in their shoulders, I didn't after surgery. When you

go to do the surgery take a hot pad or Thermacare Patches that are

light weight and heat up once contact with air. Also, taking GasX

works as well to alleviate the gas build up.

Good Luck!

I've been banded for 2 mths now, it's gone by really quick too. I'll be going for my first fill this coming Saturday. :) I hope to lose another 60lbs with this fill if not more.

Thanks Jessie, it's not been easy cause it's still an adjustment but I know if I can do it...anyone on this board can do it...the weight loss may be different because we are all different people but still, you will succeed...keep saying that over and over and just when you think you are done saying it...say it again! :)

I had surgery in nov 05 and have the same experience as you. i don't get

the gas pains often but if i do they come back in the same place - back,

left shoulder and it seems to happen if i drink or eat too fast (but mostly

drink). i also had the gas pains from surgery for MONTHS after surgery -

again intermittently and not too horrible but it took forever for them to go

away. Walking and gasx did nothing - i logged miles and miles and nothing

came out - massage finally worked, I only had gas pains twice in my life

prior to surgery - the first time i thought i was dying until a freind told

me what it was, the second time i knew and gasx allieviated it immediately.

Now it is all different. go figure.

Hi!

I was banded in January 2006, and I still get shoulder pain too. There was a

time that it was so bad, I just wanted to tear my skin off! My surgeon

explained about how the surgery is so close to the diaphragm, whose nerves are

somehow connected to the shoulder. Anyway, I came to learn that I get the pain

when I am hungry, or if I eat too much.

Yesterday, I was at a party. I arrived hungry. There was no food out and I

could feel the shoulder pain kicking in. I had to ask the hostess for something

to take the edge off. A couple of sunchips later and the shoulder pain was gone.

When I eat too much, the shoulder acts with a vengence. A cup of soup with a

cup of salad, for example, was too much. I still haven't found that 'soft stop'

the signal that many bandsters have and it tells them to stop eatting. Perhaps,

if I could recognize the signal, then I could stop and not know the shoulder

pain.

and getting rid of it - try deep breaths. That helps open up the diaphragm

area, Also try lying down for a few minutes. or putting your arms over your

head, behind your back, bent at your side - all these movements seem to help me

if the pain is after eatting.

good luck. Hope this helps.

Hi Babs,

I have been lucky so far, that my pain stops at my shoulders and knees.

However, even after both knees have been replaced, one just not quite a year

ago, I still have horrific pain in what I think are the joints. I don't know how

much of my knee is metal, but when I wake up every morning, the insides of my

knees are in agony. And I even sleep with a pillow between them! I have one last

visit with my knee surgeon, I'll have to ask him what's going on, 'cause it's in

the same place on both knees. Once I take my pills and move around, I'm ok. But

it does interrupt my sleep. I can't imagine having my feet and hands hurting- I

think those are the most important parts of our bodies to have working correctly

and pain free. It's hard enough with the other parts of my body shot, I don't

know how I could handle those parts in pain too. I'm so sorry. My knees were

replaced because of arthritis, is that what you have? Sometimes my knees were so

inflammed, you could practically fry an

egg on them because of the heat that came with the inflammation! I used lots of

ice packs, and I still use some stuff called Biofreeze, it helps calm down the

pain- I use it on almost every body part that hurts. You're in my thoughts and

prayers

Jeannie, It is hard to deal with any pain, but some how we learn how to when it

is there every day. Most of my pain stems from my cervical and lumbar area. I

have stenosis in both areas, along with DDD. I was diagnoised with the DDD in my

late 20s but I think the two car wrecks caused the process to speed up. Both

wrecks were really bad. I actually have 4 different diseases in my back and neck

so that doesn' hurt much.

Stents are kinda like bowling gloves only they have medal rods that keep me

from bending my wrist.
