Having had 3 mylegrams in my spinal experience it is so important that you

have it done not only by a great radiologist but that they have tha best

equipment. Without that the pictures are cloudy, so I beg you to go to a

University

setting where they have the latest and greatest. Also Emg results vary so

greatly depending on the competency of the Doc and the equipment used. If after

myelogram you are getting varying opinions you can suggest having a discogram

which is a very very painful experience but they might be able to identify your

exact problem.

Good Luck to YOU

Yeah I was totally confused yesterday. After i saw the Neuro on monday he

scheduled me for a myelogram on June 26th. So yesterday at 445pm I get a call

from the hospital saying that I needed to be at the hospital no later then 6am

and to bring insurance card,id and $$$$. I told them that the doctor had

scheduled me for the 26th and they said that maybe the doctor moved the appt up.

Okay fine...I would love to get it over and done with. So I called my Neuro but

the office was already closed and I got the answering service and told her what

was going on and she said she would page him for me....hours and hours went by

and I still hadn't heard back. So i called Connie as i was freaking out not

knowing what to do.....if it had been changed and i didn't go then i'd be

screwed. So i decided to just go ahead and go.....AND SOMEONE their at the

hospital screwed up. After i got home this morning i did call my Neuro office

and told them what had happened and they were very apologetic and she didn't

know what happened about the doctor not returning my page as he was at a

different hospital doing surgery, but she is going to get back with me on

that....WHAT A MESS! Damn and I was so so close of getting a shot of valium!!!!

Should of made them give it to me anyhow LOL

Re: Myelogram

Please accept my apology for the post I just sent, I meant to send it to

and via private emails but after what had said I was Very upset

(could you tell? lol) and goofed on who I sent it to. I am so sorry, I had

talked to last night, she had called telling me about the mix up yesterday

and when I read that this morning I was mad, can't believe they not only screwed

up yesterday but then today what she went through... ugh

you may want to fill them in on the call last night and the page sent to

your doc so they know what I'm talking about.

Again my apologies for the words, no excuse but I have not had my meds yet

today and should have double checked the addy I was sending it to, I thought

had emailed me personally and went to hit " To " to send a copy to

also and hit send by accident, wasnt paying attention.

Horrible HORRIBLE pain, wasn't it???

Did ya manage to finish the entire test?

I couldn't and had to have a MRI.

Hi Cindi,

Unfortunately, you cannot be put to sleep for the test. It may be possible to

get some light sedation, but I'm not positive. The test involves the doc/

radiologist removing a small amount of cerebrospinal fluid from your spine and

replacing the exact amount with a contrast (dye) that is radiopaque, which

allows them to see it with flouroscopy which is a live xray, not just snapshots

like standard xray. Once the contrast is injected they look at your spine with

flouro and can see much more clearly the spine anatomy and it will give them a

better idea of what is truly causing your symptoms.

the risks include infection, which is a very low risk. More serious risks

include a spinal headache and damage to the spinal cord. You will have to lie

flat for about 24 hours after the procedure so your dura (the sac that surrounds

your spinal cord and holds in the CSF) can heal up the hole that was created by

the needle. If the hole does not seal up on it's own, you have a loss of CSF

which gives you a muther trucker of a spinal headache. Not fun.

Hi, I'm new to this group and wanted to see if anyone has ever had a

Myelogram of the lumbar spine. I originally went to a Neurosurgeon

because I have been having leg numbness, and hip pain which is really

painful at night. I was diagnosed 10 yrs. ago with 2 degenerated

discs. The pain from it has been off and on for years but now that I

have new symptoms, I decided to go see a Dr. again. The new MRI

states that I have narrowing of the spine, bone spurs and of course

degenerative disc disease with fluid leaking. I also have very

painful neck and shoulder which I have had for years but I never

checked into, when I told the Neuro. this, he immediately ordered an

MRI of the Cervical area. I guess with a Myelogram you have to be

careful of no problems with the spinal cord in the neck. I just got a

message back from the Dr.'s of saying that I have arthritis in my neck

at 3 different levels, and that I will also need a myelogram for that

also. Could anyone tell me what this test is like? Can I be put to

sleep for it if I press the issue?

Whew! Glad I never had to have one. I had Radio Frequency Lesioning on

both sides of my neck and it got rid of about 90% of the pain.

oops.... I had fusions C-4 to 6 in 1999 and 6 to 7 in 06

I have had good relief from RFL, but sadly it doesn't last long enough for me to

be a viable source of pain relief. I only get about 2 -3 weeks relief and you

can do it no sooner than 3 months apart on the same side. ---

HI CIndi

I just had a myelogram about a month ago. I had never had one before.

I don't think I would ever have another.. The doc had a hard time getting the

needle in the wrong place. So when he finally got it in the right place it sends

needle feeling like stuff and I thought we were done then he injected this med

think it was iodine or something that was real hot and felt like I was wetting

myself. Then I went into cat scan and they did a scan. Then I had to lay in

recovery for at least 2 hours.. Hope I didn't freak you out but I wish I had

known before I went in.. Good luck.

I just had my 2nd fusion surgery. It will be 3 weeks this coming Thursday..

Good luck

Cindi, I had one of these done wow must be over 20 years ago. I

didn't

think they still did them! Anyways, from what I remember, the only

part that was hurting was the needle coming out. I felt a lot of

pushing and pulling it was a funny weird feeling. You have to lay flat

for the rest of the day due to the spinal fluid travelling up your

spine, otherwise you'll get a nasty headache. I dont know if they

would sedate you or not, I guess you can make this a request.

Hope you get on ok!

Hi - its again-

so the Orthopedic and the Osteopath says what I have is " Congenital Stenosis "

from the small pedicules I have in my spine.

The Ortho says that impacts the fact joints from moving well.

Besides the SI joint pain which I got the RF for and seems to be working well- I

have chronic sciatica which radiates into my right foot the first interspace

between big toe and goes into 2,3 toes and when its strong it makes my toes

curl.

It just comes off and on, sometimes its first thing in the am when Im stiff

getting out of bed.

Does surgery help that leg and foot pain? I hate taking pain pills every day

but it seems that thats is the only thing that knocks the sciatica out.

thanks

I had mine the last week in December and it took a few weeks for the

pain to subside. I don't have half as much burning pain in my arms as

I once did. I hope mine lasts a while.

different neurosurgeon today and he wants to do a myelogram.. I had one before

my last surgery in Feb. Why would I have to have another one.. He said it was

to see if there was any nerves that are squeezed.. I thought the last myelogram

was painful.. Not sure what I should do.. anyone have any idea for me?

Thanks

HI . This is from great5kids.I have had Myelograms, Disco gram, C4-C7

fusions and 5 bad disc's on my lumbar spine. As with any surgery if you feel

uneasy at any time then you can always get a second opinion. It is your body and

after a surgery is not the time to ask questions. Just make sure that you

understand exactly what they are doing or going to do before they do it. Make

sure it is what you want and understand. I hope this will help you.. Good luck

Honestly they are a little outdated...and I've never heard of someone needing

more than one. Not sure I would go through one again!

Kathy is correct. With the advanced radiology techniques available today that

are COMPLETELY non-invasive...the use of myelogram is plummeting. It has too

many risks and the more you have the higher your risk is. The cerabrospinal

fluis is in a delicate balance. Foreign substances can cause a host of problems

as well as offsetting the exact amount of fluid you have. This test requires a

radiopaque dye to be injected into the fluid that surrounds the of your spinal

cord, is is considered part of the spinal cord. This fluid is continuous with

the fluid in your brain. the dye will also suround your brain...as well as any

bacteria that may get in.

I have not heard of a person going through that many myelograms.

Robin:

I don't mean to make something out of nothing, but there is a great deal of

information out there concerning the dangers of myleograms. The older dyes can

cause something called arachnoiditis -- which is a life time of pain. Read the

Burton Report before you consent. I'm sure there are other alternatives for

testing (CT scan or MRI). I had compressed nerves at C6-C7 and a CT scan was

most sufficient.

Hi Val,

I totally agree it really wasn't a big deal(the myelogram itself)and I never

got the headache either. I will totally agree about being wiped out. Actually, I

would have to say that it reminded me of a surgery itself. You know that tired

you get after any surgery. Day of myelogram I slept, I felt cold and tired

anytime that I was awake.

The next day I did take my mom to her Dr. appt in Boise...(shoulda stayed

home)sitting in the drivers seat, in the doctors chairs, in the restaraunt

booth, all irritated my back. Sure was glad to get home and finely relax.

I feel pretty good today. Not as sore as yesterday by a long shot. I can sit on

the couch and it doesn't irritate my back. Last night I was telling my husband

that it felt like someone was taking dull needles and poking me in butt and

upper thigh. I went to sleep on my belly and had a good sleep for a change.

(Probably due to pain pills) it was nice either way.

> >

> > Today, I got this test done. Dr. was not sure he was going to be able to get

it to work. My fusions are so solid he took a good 20 minutes to make it work.

> >

> > Test results should be in tomorrow but I most likely won't hear anything

until next week. My entire left side could feel the dye. Dr said it would only

bother the nerves that were having issues. Gee I felt it and there are more than

I thought.

> >

> > I was just totally drained from this " simple " test. Slept almost all day

after we got home. Moving slow, and trying to avoid that dreaded spinal

headache. So off to bed...I'm suppose to take my mother to her Dr. appt.

tomorrow, we will see...dear hubby may have to do it. My age is sure letting me

know that I can't handle this stuff like I use to.
